In ancient China, willow branches (柳枝) were often used as a gift to friends and family members who would leave. Do you know why willow branches are a symbol of saying goodbye?
One reason is that willow trees are strong. They can live in any soil, wet or dry, north or south.
Because of this special feature, when saying goodbye to loved ones, giving a willow branch is a way to tell them you hope they will easily get used to their new living environment.
Another reason is that, in Chinese, the pronunciation for the willow tree “柳” is similar to the character “留”. So giving a willow branch in ancient China was like asking the others to stay, even though you know that they must leave.
It’s said that this custom became popular during the Han Dynasty. At that time, Baqiao, a bridge in Chang’an, today’s Xi’an, was a common place to say goodbye. People often stopped there and handed willow branches to people who were going to depart.
Willow branches, as a symbol of saying goodbye, were often mentioned in poems, especially at the time of the Tang and Song dynasties.

Welcome to Dunhuang, a place with more than 2,000 years of history! On the old Silk Road, this city was the gateway to and from Ancient China, and a green island in the middle of the desert.
Dunhuang’s long history shows it is the center of culture and business. Today, Dunhuang is a world-class tourist site with more than 700 caves. Now we are going to enter some ancient caves known as the Mogao Grottoes? These caves were carved out of the rock. Now look around the walls of the cave! You can see elements from Ancient Greece, India and Iran.
What is unique to Dunhuang is the mural that shows the Apsaras who are musicians, singers and dancers in heaven. In one mural, the Apsaras are sailing in the bright blue sky, with their scarves flying, as if they are about to fly down to meet us. And here is another one. The Apsaras are playing musical instruments, dancing and throwing flowers. The paintings of Apsaras reach the highest level during the Tang Dynasty. These paintings are full of life, showing the optimism and happiness of people at that time.
Next we’ll see the famous Library Cave very soon-it is only a stone’s throw from here. The treasures such as paintings and silk products in the ancient library give us a picture of Dunhuang when it was at the center of the Silk Road trade. Thanks to the library, now we know that goods arrived in Dunhuang from as far away as the east Europe, and that goods were also sold from Dunhuang to other countries.

A healthy diet is made up of water and different kinds of foods. We know that healthy foods like fruits, vegetables and fish, are important as they offer energy and fiber, without giving us much fat and sugar. But why is water important?
The human body needs water to survive. Water is important as it carries poisons and waste out of our bodies. However, doctors advise us to drink plenty of water, much more than the small amount we need to stay alive.
Some doctors believe that water is important for health in all kinds of ways. They believe that many illnesses and health problems appear as a result of dehydration—a lack of water. Most people are dehydrated at least some of time, although they probably don’t know it. It is surprising to learn that if we feel thirsty, we are already in the first stages of dehydration. In fact, we are advised to drink water before we feel thirsty.
These doctors think that health problems such as headaches, high blood pressure could be helped if people drink more water. They also believe that drinking more water can help people who are fat. Water contains no calories so it will not make us gain weight. If we drink water, we will probably drink less sugary soft drinks. Doctors also believe that drinking more water may stop people from overeating. They say that many people think that they are hungry when they are, in fact, thirsty. Doctors suggest, therefore, that we eat less food and drink more water.
There are still many health problems that cannot be solved by drinking water, so we should not stop going to see the doctors completely.
