Chinese runner Su Bingtian made history by becoming the first Asian athlete (运动员) to compete in the men’s 100m final at the World Athletics Championships (世界锦标赛). Su set a national record in the semi-final with a time of 9.99 seconds to become one of the nine fastest men in the world.
“In my dreams, I never expected to reach the final of the World Championships and now that I’ve done it, I still can’t believe it has happened and I want to thank my coach (教练) because he helped me a lot. I can hardly succeed without his help.” Su said after the semi-final.
However, his coach said Su did not have the talent of a runner. Su is only 172cm tall. Besides, compared with other countries, China’s running career (事业) starts later, and few runners choose sprint (短跑) as a lifelong career.
Although it was a challenge for Su to start his career when he was 15, which is quite late for a runner, Su overcame all the difficulties because of his spirit (精神) of never giving up. His coach said, “I think that’s one of the reasons for his success.”
What’s more, to make his dream come true, he kept on training for a long time every day. He felt worried every time he had to stop training because of his injuries (伤病), but Su strongly believes that only through hard work can one get success.

Imagine an expressway (高速公路) that can circle around Earth more than three and a half times! China is home to the world’s largest expressway network (网), with a total length of 160,000 kilometers at the end of 2020. By 2035, the expressway network will cover all cities and counties, China Daily reported.
The expressway’s blueprint (蓝图) was first announced in 1991, when China was still at the early stage of its market reforms (改革). The speedy growth of the economy called for more convenient transportation. The government planned to build expressways with a length of 35,000 kilometers over 30 years. But the goal was achieved by 2008, 13 years ahead of schedule.
The expressways connect not only China’s biggest cities but also many medium-sized cities. They reach about 70 percent of China’s urban residents (居民). Different climate and terrain (地形) challenges were overcome. This allowed roads to be built in undeveloped areas.
The expressways provide strong support for poverty alleviation (扶贫). Take the Shanghai-Chongqing expressway as an example. At the eastern end of the road, Shanghai is China’s financial center. But the western end used to be one of the country’s poorest areas. It’s the Wuling mountain region. It covers the city of Chongqing, as well as Hubei, Hunan and Guizhou provinces. Because of the expressway, the region has been lifted out of extreme poverty.

If someone says to you, "give me five", don't give five yuan to him! It will make others laugh! The person isn't asking for your money, but your fingers.
In the U.S.A, “give me five” or “give me the high five” is a good gesture(手势). You can see it often in films or on TV. It means the slapping (拍打)of each other's right hands together. People do it when something happy happens. For example, if a student does well in exams or gets No.1 in his school sports meet, he will give high fives to his friends to celebrate.
Who did this gesture first? Why did he do that? It may come from the old Roman (古罗马的) gesture of raising(举起)the right arm for the emperor(皇帝). This showed that the person raising his arm had nothing in his hand and he couldn't hurt the emperor.
Why not try to give the high five to your friends?

Do Yao Ming, Liu Xiang and Justine Henin have anything in common with people like us? You probably answer “NO!”
It seems that top athletes live in a world that is completely different from ours. However, if we could see into their minds, it would be clear that they are actually just like us.
To achieve their goals, sportspeople not only have to prepare physically, but mentally (内心地). They have to get to know themselves, manage stress and develop their powers of concentration. So they can put all their effort into their events.
We may not be sports stars ourselves, but we have to face the same problems. We set goals for ourselves and think about personal development. We have to manage our fears before big exams. We worry about our friendships with both classmates and teachers.
Like sportspeople, we try to be mentally strong and give our best.
Only a few of us will be competing in the Olympic Games. But, all the same, there is much we share with sports heroes. Just like athletes, how we feel influences our decisions, behavior and achievements.
Top athletes show us that success isn’t simply down to chance. We can control the direction of our life’s journey.
