Dear Miss Hooper, I’m writing to thank you for your help this year. There were lots of lessons, but you made sure I could understand each one. To tell the truth, you’re the best teacher I’ve met. You explain things so clearly, and are also so kind. I really enjoyed every minute of your class. There were so many best parts this year. Whenever we had a class, you made it fun and interesting to everyone. All of your students found learning new things was so easy because of you. I really believe you have a great teaching skill. You should be very proud of the way that you help children learn. Thanks to you, I decide to become a teacher like you when I grow up. I was new to the school this year. I didn’t enjoy school much before. At my old school, I found learning was quite difficult. The last nine months have changed all of that. I’m now confident (自信的) and looking forward to the next school year. I have mixed feelings about school next year. I’m sad that you won’t be my teacher anymore. However, I’m happy that other children will get to share your knowledge (学问). I’m sure that they’ll thank you for your good work. Thank you once again for all of your help. You are really a great teacher and you’ve helped me greatly. I hope that we can share the same classroom again one day. Best wishes, Adam Johnson |

To the north of Kunlun Mountains, there is a monster (怪物)called Xiang Liu, which has nine heads with human faces but the body of a snake. These magic characters are from the ancient book Shan Hai Jing.
Shan Hai Jing, also known as The Classic of Mountains and Seas, is said to be at least 2, 200 years old. It is about culture and geography of China before the Qin Dynasty. The book has eighteen parts, talking about more than 550 mountains and 300 seas.
A famous story in the book is about Zhu Rong, the god of fire. He has a beast-like (野兽般的)body and a human face, riding around the sky on two dragons. He had a big fight with Gong Gong, the god of water, and won. But after the fight, the human world came into complete darkness. Then he brought fire to the world and taught humans how to use it.
Although it’s not clear who wrote it, Shan Hai Jing is an important ancient book and it is considered as one of the treasures of Chinese culture. People of all ages love the stories in the book. There are also many films, games and artworks made from it.

It was once thought that mythical characters such as Yu the Great or Boyi wrote the book. However, the general agreement among modern scholars (学者) is that the book was not written at a single time by a single writer, but rather by many people from the period of the Warring States to the beginning of the Han dynasty. The exact writer of the book and the time it was written are still uncertain.
There is nothing more attractive in Shan Hai Jing than the mysterious monsters described in it. Here are some examples. On the mountain Raiseshake, there is an animal which looks like a long-tailed ape, but it has white ears. It crouches as it moves along and it runs like a human. Its name is the live-lively. If you eat it, you’ll be a good runner. There is another kind of wild animal in Mount Qingqiu. It looks like a fox but has nine tails. Its cry is similar to that of a baby. If you eat its meat, you will not be harmed by bad spirits. Also there is a bird in Mount Base. It looks like a chicken, but it has three heads, six eyes, six feet, and three wings. Its name is the esteem-add. If you eat it, you won’t keep falling asleep. These monsters give readers a look at the ancients’ understanding and imagination of some unknown things.
As a record of ancient Chinese mythology, Shan Hai Jing is undoubtedly attractive. It is an encyclopedia (百科全书) that can show ancient social life.

【推荐3】Honestly, I had never enjoyed reading science fictions until a friend of mine pressed a copy of The Three-Body Problem into my hands. “You’ve just got to read this novel!”
“Bu I have no interest in superheroes fighting aliens to save the world. I prefer real people dealing with real-life situations.”
“Exactly. That’s why I want you to read it”
But, he was right. I fell in love with the book from the very beginning and finished it in only a couple of days. One reason why it was such a page-turner was Liu Cixin’s wonderful story-telling style. I especially liked his way of dealing with time. Most books are in the order of time, but The Three-Body Problem jumps back and forth. It starts back in history, nearly 60 years ago. Then, it jumps forward 40 years, when the characters have become elderly men and women, before jumping back again.
And the lives of Ye Wenjie and Wang Miao certainly kept me turning the pages. However, I also fell in love with this book because it was thought-provoking(发人深省的). Yes, there are aliens in it, but the theme of this story is life on Earth and how we humans are destroying the planet. Real-world science, history and philosophy(哲学) are combined into this very attractive story. As a great sci-fi work, it sparks(激发) interest in science, and it makes readers think.
The Three-Body Problem has enjoyed great popularity worldwide. It’s no surprise then, that it has been adapted(改编) into a TV series. At first, I didn’t like this idea. Books often lose a lot of their value when they are made into TV series. Books are slow. You need patience to understand what is going on. TV moves much faster. It is packed with action and cool characters. Young people are often more interested in what they see on their screens than in the stories and their messages. However, some of you may be too young to fully understand books like The Three-Body Problem. A good TV series can help you to become a better reader and can greatly encourage you to read more widely. But once you do fall in love with reading, you will realize that it is a good book, not a TV series that will be your friend for life.
1. What can we learn from the first paragraph?A.The writer wasn’t interested in sci-fi novels. | B.The writer’s friend wrote the sci-fi novel. |
C.The writer’s friend used to be a novelist. | D.The writer has no interest in reading at all. |
A.Because the book was a little bit boring. | B.Because the book was really attractive. |
C.Because the story in the book is short. | D.Because the story was about aliens. |
A.The main characters in the story are all aliens. |
B.The superheroes drove aliens away in the end. |
C.The theme of the story is how aliens destroy Earth. |
D.The story begins with what happened 60 year ago. |
A.a good book can make TV series more valuable |
B.there’s no need to adapt good books into TV series |
C.young people are more interested in reading books |
D.young people can understand sci-fi novels better |
