An old Chinese saying goes “Eat dumplings on Start of Winter or your ears will be frostbitten (冻伤)” and there is an interesting folk tale behind this old saying. It all begins with Zhang Zhongjing, the man from Chinese history known as the “Medicine Saint”.
Zhang Zhongjing lived during the Eastern Han Dynasty 1800 years ago. Reportedly, Zhang noticed that many people’s ears were frostbitten when he returned to his hometown one winter. He decided to wrap mutton, chilli (辣椒) and some warming medicinal herbs in skin. Folding them into the shape of an ear, he boiled them in water before giving them to the poor. All the materials used in Zhang’s recipe could help warm the body, could help warm the body and then make the cold ears not frozen. The dumplings also had a wonderful taste so they were well received by the people. This food was originally (最初) called “Jiao’er” for its shape, and later the name slowly became Jiaozi. Zhang used to give them away from the day of Dongzhi to New Year’s Eve, when the villagers had fully been very well from their illness.
Today, Jiaozi is still a must in winter in most parts of northern China, especially during the Spring Festival. No words can precisely describe Chinese people’s affection for dumplings, as the food has already become a symbol of home and warmth.

A growing number of people are using ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence (人工智能) program to create books for sale. Although sales have so far been slow, human writers are worried that ChatGPT-created books might hurt the writing and publishing industry.
Brett Schickler is a salesman in Rochester, New York. Until recently, he never imagined he could be an writer. But after learning about the ChatGPT artificial intelligence program, Schickler found that he had a good chance.
“The idea of writing a book finally seemed possible,” said Schickler, “and I thought I could do this.”
Using the AI software, Schickler created his first book a 30-page children’s e-book in a few hours. He sold it online and made less than $100. While that may not sound like much, it is enough to make him want to create other books using the software.
“I could see people making a whole career (职业) out of this,” said Schickler.
There were over 200 e-books in Amazon’s Kindle store as of mid-February that say ChatGPT is a writer or co-writer. And the number is rising daily. But due to the nature of ChatGPT and many writers’ failure to admit (承认) that they have used it, it is nearly impossible to get a full count of how many e-books may be written by AI.
Some professional writers are becoming worried about the effects that ChatGPT could have on the book publishing industry. Mary Rasenberger is the director of the Authors Guild, a writer’s group. She said, “This is something we really need to be worried about—these books will flood the market and a lot of authors are going to be out of work.”

【1】Feel down? Hug a tree! Recently, many Chinese young people have turned to trees to help with their stress. ① it sounds strange, there’s a science behind the act of tree-hugging.
【2】It can be explained by the “biophilia hypothesis (亲生命假说)”. It was pointed out by US scientist Edward Wilson in 1984. He said that humans are born to love being around other living things. Humans’ love for nature is “in our DNA”. This is why people prefer natural, green views to city views. It’s also one of the reasons why people love cute pets.
【3】Some studies have looked into why tree-hugging can help with our health. A study in 2021 reported that the activity can increase oxytocin (催产素). It’s a hormone (荷尔蒙) responsible for feelings. The higher the level of oxytocin is, the calmer and happier you may be. Hugging trees for only 21 seconds can lead to an increase in oxytocin.
【4】Another hormone called cortisol (皮质醇) is a mark of stress. The brain produces more cortisol when the person is anxious, angry, or very sad. ② trees helps cut cortisol production, which makes us feel better.

Many small creatures live on the tree—and they are ③ small to be seen. 81. You may want to be gentle when hugging trees-just like how you hug a friend! Hugging trees can cut the stress.
