【1】Feel down? Hug a tree! Recently, many Chinese young people have turned to trees to help with their stress. ①           it sounds strange, there’s a science behind the act of tree-hugging.

【2】It can be explained by the “biophilia hypothesis (亲生命假说)”. It was pointed out by US scientist Edward Wilson in 1984. He said that humans are born to love being around other living things. Humans’ love for nature is “in our DNA”. This is why people prefer natural, green views to city views. It’s also one of the reasons why people love cute pets.

【3】Some studies have looked into why tree-hugging can help with our health. A study in 2021 reported that the activity can increase oxytocin (催产素). It’s a hormone (荷尔蒙) responsible for feelings. The higher the level of oxytocin is, the calmer and happier you may be. Hugging trees for only 21 seconds can lead to an increase in oxytocin.

【4】Another hormone called cortisol (皮质醇) is a mark of stress. The brain produces more cortisol when the person is anxious, angry, or very sad. ②            trees helps cut cortisol production, which makes us feel better.

【5】Although the activity is helpful to us, it’s important to keep in mind that we shouldn’t hurt nature while hugging trees. Trees often hold valuable ecosystems. Many small creatures live on the tree—and they are ③         small to be seen. 81. You may want to be gentle when hugging trees-just like how you hug a friend! Hugging trees can cut the stress. Psychologists(心理学家) are interested in the reasons why some people like taking part in risky sports.

When they studied people who were learning to jump from a plane with a parachute, they found that the parachutists’ bodies produced large amounts of two hormones(激素), adrenaline(肾上腺素) and noradrenaline(去甲肾上腺素), just before they made their jump. These hormones help to prepare us for any sudden activity. Adrenaline increases the heart beat and provides more sugar for the muscles(肌肉), while noradrenaline makes us react(反应) more quickly. However, noradrenaline also supplies energy to a part of the brain which controls feelings of pleasure. A feeling of pleasure caused by this hormone makes certain people want to take part in dangerous sports.

Another possible reason is the level of excitement in part of the brain. According to some psychologists, the brain tries to manage a certain level of excitement. They believe that people who have a low level of excitement look for new experiences in order to fire themselves with excitement, but people who usually have a high level of excitement try to avoid risks in order not to become overexcited. If the psychologists are right, people with a low excitement level are the ones who enjoy taking part in dangerous sports and activities.

It is thought that people with low levels of excitement have a slower-reacting nervous system than people with higher levels. So it may be possible to find out your level of excitement by testing your nervous system. A quick way of doing this is to put some lemon juice on your tongue(舌头). If you produce a lot of saliva(唾液), your nervous system has been affected(影响) by the lemon and so you probably have a high level of excitement; if you produce little saliva, you probably have a low excitement level. If you have a low level, you might enjoy taking part in risky sports. However, this does not mean that you have to try parachuting!

1. Did the parachutists’ bodies produce large amounts of adrenaline and noradrenaline before they made their jump?

A group of dolphins (海豚) are swimming in a swimming pool at Dolphin Cove in the Florida Keys, America. 10-year-old Jamie Taggart is playing near them. The expression on his face is full of joy. Jamie used to have little communication with the outside world. Recently, however, he’s been swimming with these dolphins and it has opened up a new world for him.

The dolphins in the pool are part of a program called Dolphin Human Therapy (DHT). The program is started by Dr. David Nathanson. He uses dolphins to help children with disabilities. DHT has been successful and children are really excited to be near the dolphins. The main success of the program is that being with the dolphins has helped the children communicate with people. They never did it before. Also, they have learned faster than before and, more importantly, they have remembered the knowledge they learned.

Dr. Nathanson says that dolphins are very clever. “They are able to process information in a ‘feeling’ way. When they see someone in trouble, they will help,” he says.

There are a lot of stories that show the healing powers (治愈能力) of dolphins. They have helped people with serious disabilities and illnesses, not just children. For example, after Bill Bowell had a serious illness, he became depressed (抑郁的) and was unable to work. Then he swam with a dolphin in South Wales. “The dolphin looked straight into my eyes and I started to cry,” says Bowell. “As I cried, he stayed close to me and was quiet. After about ten minutes, he touched my face until I laughed out loudly. That changed my life forever.”

Scientists think that the ultrasound (超声) produced by dolphins is the key to their healing powers. Modern medicine also uses ultrasound. Dolphins’ ultrasound, however, is four times more powerful. Nobody fully understands the influence of dolphins’ ultrasound on humans. It is still a mystery.

About the program:

Founder: Dr. David Nathanson
Purpose: To help those     1     children.
2    : Help the children communicate with people. Help them learn faster.
Help them remember the knowledge.

【推荐3】The human brain weights about 1.4 kilograms, but it can hold much more information than most computers. However, there is another difference between humans and computers. Computers don’t forget information they are given, and luckily we don’t usually have to. But everyone can improve their memory if they want to. Here are some suggestions.

Try to use new information right away. For example, if you meet someone who says “Hi! I’m Carlos,” don’t just say “Hello.” Repeat the person’s name. say “Hello”

Break a big number into smaller parts. For example, it’s hard to memorize 109244153, but if you divide it into three parts—109/244/153—it becomes easier.

Go over information. If you bring what you’ve learned back to your mind, they become easier to remember. For example, before you go to sleep, it’s a good idea to think about the new things you learned that day.

Never tell yourself that you have a poor memory. You can always do something to help improve your memory. And everyone’s memory gets better if they use it often enough.

All of the suggestions are helpful. If you follow them, you are certain to improve your memory.
