On the lunar calendar, the 19th of the 24 Chinese Solar Terms is Lidong or the beginning of winter. On this day, the most popular dish is dumplings, especially in the north. An old Chinese saying goes “Eat dumplings on Start of Winter or your ears will be frostbitten (冻伤)” and there is an interesting folk tale behind this old saying. It all begins with Zhang Zhongjing, the man from Chinese history known as the “Medicine Saint”.
Zhang Zhongjing lived during the Eastern Han Dynasty 1800 years ago. Reportedly, Zhang noticed that many people’s ears were frostbitten when he returned to his hometown one winter. He decided to wrap mutton, chilli (辣椒) and some warming medicinal herbs in skin. Folding them into the shape of an ear, he boiled them in water before giving them to the poor. All the materials used in Zhang’s recipe could help warm the body, could help warm the body and then make the cold ears not frozen. The dumplings also had a wonderful taste so they were well received by the people. This food was originally (最初) called “Jiao’er” for its shape, and later the name slowly became Jiaozi. Zhang used to give them away from the day of Dongzhi to New Year’s Eve, when the villagers had fully been very well from their illness.
Today, Jiaozi is still a must in winter in most parts of northern China, especially during the Spring Festival. No words can precisely describe Chinese people’s affection for dumplings, as the food has already become a symbol of home and warmth.

Now US scientists have found the most important genetic variant for deciding height so far. This genetic variant causes people to be shorter.
Each piece of this genetic variant can make a person’s height 2.2 cm lower more or less. If people have two pieces from their parents, they will be 4.4 cm shorter more or less.
These findings were developed from a study of Peruvians(秘鲁人). They are known for being short. The average height of men is 1.65 meters, while women are 1.52 meters on average.
Scientists said only people with native American ancestry(血统)have this genetic variant. About 80 percent of the genes of a Peruvian come from this ancestry.
Scientists also found that Peruvians living by the sea have more of the genetic variant than those living in mountains or rainforests. This shows that height might also be affected(影响)by one’s environment.
One more question, why can’t we keep growing taller?
We grow taller because our bones grow. Bones increase in length because of the growth plates inside them. However, when we reach puberty(青春期), the growth plates become fully grown. At the end of puberty, they stop growing. So we can’t grow taller any more.

Although it is very common, it can always play an important role when we need it. The invention of paper greatly helped develop and spread Chinese traditional culture, which made paper so important. Paper was an important invention in ancient China. Writing developed slowly from ancient times when people mainly depended on writing instruments like ropes. At first, oracle bone(甲骨) was used as writing material. Bamboo and wood were also discovered and used during the Spring and Autumn Period. But bamboo pieces were not a good choice because they were too heavy, so paper was produced.
Thanks to the invention and popularization of paper, people could no longer use stone, wood or other materials to record writings or pictures, and so much ancient information was saved and spread. Paper is quite helpful in our life today. It is the carrier of writing and printing. 【推荐3】Are people less happy or more happy the older they get? A study found that people generally become happier and experience less worry after age 50. In fact, it found that by the age of 85, people are happier with their life than they were at 18.
The finding came from a Gallup survey of more than 340,000 adults between the age of 18 and 85 in the United States.
Arthur Stone in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science at Stony Brook University in New York led the study. His team found that levels of stress were highest among adults between the ages of 22 and 25. Stress levels dropped sharply after people reached their fifties.
Happiness was highest among the youngest adults and those in their early seventies. But the people least likely to report feeling negative emotions were those in their seventies and eighties. The survey also found that men and women had similar emotional patterns as they grow older. However, women at all ages reported more sadness, stress and worry than men did.
The researchers also considered possible influences like having young children, being unemployed or being single. But they found that influences like these did not affect the levels of happiness and well-being related to age.
So why would happiness increase with age? One theory is that, as people get older, they become more thankful for what they have and have better control of their emotions. They also spend less time thinking about bad experiences.
The original goal of the study was to confirm the popular belief that aging is connected with increased sleep problems. The survey did find an increase during middle age, especially in women. But except for that, people reported that they felt their sleep quality improved as they got older.

A carpool is people sharing the responsibility (责任) of driving to school in the morning. There are usually four or five kids in a carpool and their parents take turns (轮流) to drive the kids in their cars.

Teamwork (合作) is very important in the carpool, because no one wants to make everyone else late. It’s a great chance to learn about responsibility. Imagine (想象) sitting in the car outside of a classmate’s house, watching the clock and counting the seconds.
