The earliest form of writing appeared about 5,500 years ago. In the past, handwriting was an important subject in school. Now, many students sometimes do homework on a computer and hand in their tasks online. Many people thinking typing (打字) is quick and easy to read, while writing by hand may take longer than typing. But others say writing with a pen and paper is more valuable. Writing by hand has big advantages.
Research shows that when we write down ideas with a pen or pencil, we make the brain active to help us learn, remember and think. Writing by hand lets people show their creativity. No two people have the same handwriting. Writing by hand can also help people concentrate (集中注意力). When using a computer, people can go online or play computer games easily.
Handwriting may be pretty, however, people can get their ideas and thoughts down more quickly when they type. Typing can also make it easier for people to change. Once something is written by hand, you can’t delete (删除) it. If you want to make a change, you have to write it all over again. What’s more, some people’s handwriting may be hard to read. Typing makes everything clear, and no one will have to worry about their words being clear enough.

Artificial intelligence (人工智能) or AI in short, is the science of giving computers and machines ability to think and work like humans. AI scientists and the engineers have made a lot of cool technologies.
AI is going to change almost every field of modern life. For example, AI can help teenagers and students learn in several ways.
Personalized learning: AI can know better about students, including their advantages, weaknesses, skills, learning favorites, learning needs, and so on. Then it can create a proper learning plan for each student. |
Interactive (交互的) learning: AI has the ability to make learning more interactive and interesting. Things like interactive learning apps and educational games can make subject learning more interesting. What’s more, they can make students interested in a subject at once. This kind of active learning is sure to be more helpful than studying alone. |
Automated (自动的) advice and help: AI can provide automated advice and answers to questions. It can examine students’ work and provide personalized help. For example, ChatGPT can answer students ‘questions quickly in a private, low-pressure way. This kind of advice and answers can help students better understand knowledge and use their knowledge. |
Greater resources (资源): AI can make many of the students’ learning resources richer and wider, like electronic textbooks, online courses, and study apps. For example, a biology textbook with AI technology may provide interactive 3D models of a human body that students can study more carefully. |
In a word, AI has a great ability to improve studying and learning. By using AI, students can study smarter and reach higher levels of learning and success.
However, what is the future of AI? Will it be a good thing? No one knows the results now. But I think everyone expects AI to be a good thing, not a bad one.

Have you ever heard of Stonehenge? It is a rock circle, not only one of Britain’s most famous places in history, but also one of its greatest mysteries. Most historians believe it must be almost 5,000 years old. Perhaps we might never know how it was built because the stones are so big and heavy, but we do know people there must have been hard-working and great planners!
Every year it receives more than 750,000 visitors. No one is sure what Stonehenge was used for, but most agree that the position of the stones must be for a special purpose. For example, some historians believed Stonehenge was a temple where ancient readers tried to communicate with the gods. Another popular idea is that Stonehenge might be a kind of calendar. The large stones were put together in a certain way. On midsummer’s morning, the sun shines directly into the center of the stones. Others think the stones can stop people from getting illness.

Do you know crosstalk? It’s also known by its Chinese name xiangsheng. It is a famous Chinese show in the form of a dialogue usually between two people. It came into being in Beijing in the late Qing Dynasty (the mid-19th century). It began as a form of street show, and it also borrowed from other arts, such as Beijing Opera. No matter what the form is, the crosstalk show just wants to make people laugh.
Crosstalk is one of China’s most important and popular performing arts. Modern crosstalk usually has four skills—speaking, imitating, teasing and singing. Some stories come from everyday life, popular ideas and hot news. Some come from history stories. During the show, sometimes one actor is angry with the other because of their different ideas. Crosstalk is full of fun with singing, different sounds, musical instruments, and even crying. So if something makes you unhappy, you can enjoy crosstalk.
Nowadays, you can watch it in tea houses. Of course, you can also listen to it on radio while taking a walk or driving a car. And you can watch it on TV with your families.

I am a big sports fan, so the usual way I relax is to watch or play many kinds of sports. My favourite sport is tennis, but I am interested in all kinds of sports. Whether I am playing tennis or watching a game on TV, it is exciting to see all the team members doing their best. It’s amazing to see players playing very well. It’s true that playing sports is not physically (身体上地) “relaxing”, but I find it really cool, and a good way of “relaxing” my brain after a day’s hard work.
I also enjoy listening to music, and I always have some music playing during my free time. I listen to all types of music, but I like listening to beautiful piano music best. Some people can’t study while listening to music, but for me, I believe I can study better by listening to light music.
Some people choose to relax by travelling. I don’t have a favourite place, but I hear that travelling in Beijing is really enjoyable. I like visiting different kinds of places and eating famous snacks there. I also enjoy sightseeing and seeing how the culture and people change from place to place.

One April Fool’s Day, a reporter in England announced that there would be no more spaghetti because the spaghetti farmers in Italy had stopped growing spaghetti. Many people ran to their local supermarkets to buy as much spaghetti as they could. By the time people realized that the story was a hoax, all of the spaghetti across the country had been sold out. In another famous trick, a TV show in England reported the discovery of special water. They said this water would help people lose weight and that one customer had already lost a lot of weight in just four months. By the end of the day, more than 10,000 people had phoned the TV station to find out how to get this water.
Many April Fool’s jokes may end up being not very funny. A famous TV star once invited his girlfriend onto his show on April Fool’s Day. He asked her to marry him. The lady was so happy because she really wanted to get married. However, when she said yes, he replied, “April Fool!” That little joke didn’t have a very happy ending. The TV star lost his girlfriend and his show was canceled.
One of the world’s most famous tricks, however, happened in October rather than April. In that month in 1938, actor Orson Welles announced on his radio program that aliens from Mars had landed on the earth. He described where they had landed and told how they were moving across the United States. Welles made it sound so real that hundreds of people believed the story, and fear spread across the whole country. By the time police officers announced that the story was a hoax, thousands of people had left their homes.
