One evening last autumn, while Marcos, 15, did his homework and his father, Frank, 47, prepared lesson plans, they heard screaming outside. It was from one of their neighbors, the Smith family. Then Marcos’ eye was caught by a glow (火光) from there.
“The house’s on fire!” Marcos cried. Wearing only in shorts, the barefoot (光脚的) teen ran out with his dad. When they got there, Grandmother Mary, mother Susan, and son Nathan were crying for help. Through the open front door, father Alex was staggering (磕磕绊绊) down the stairs, coughing heavily.
“Anyone else in it?” Frank asked.
“My son!” Alex pointed to the second floor.
Frank started up the stairs, but smoke and heat forced him to his knees. He crawled (爬) upstairs and down the hall where Alex said he would find Cody, 8, who had locked himself in a bedroom. Frank tried hard to open the door. But Cody made no reply, and Frank had to make his way back downstairs. At the same time, Marcos saw Mary and Susan pulling a ladder, shouting: “Cody is at the window!”
Marcos then placed the ladder near the window and climbed up. When Marcos reached the window, he pushed the screen into the room and managed to coax (哄) Cody out. Holding Cody with one arm, Marcos slowly climbed down the ladder. Cody was quickly sent to a nearby hospital, where he’s treated for smoke inhalation (吸入).
“You just don’t see a teenager have that kind of braveness,” said people around.

Week by week her list grew: I was very thin; I wasn’t good at math; I talked too much; I was too proud, and so on. At last, I became very angry. I ran to my father with tears (眼泪) in my eyes. He listened to me quietly and asked, “Are those things true or not? Jane, didn’t you ever think about what you’re really like?” Then he added, “Well, you have that girl’s opinions. Make a list of everything she said and mark (做标记) the points that are true.”
I did as he told me. To my great surprise, I found out that about half the things were true.
Some of them I couldn’t change, like being very thin, but many I could and suddenly I wanted to change. For the first time I got a clear picture of myself.
I brought the list back to Daddy, and he said, “Now you know better about yourself. But you have to learn to listen, not just close your ears angrily and feel hurt. When something about you is true, you’ll find it will be of great help to you. Don’t shut (闭上) your ears. Listen to the truth and do what you know is the right thing to do.”
Daddy’s advice has returned to me at many important moments. In my life, I’ve never received a better piece of advice.

In yesterday’s class, Mr. Peters talked about baseball. He said, “Baseball is one of the most popular sports in the US. If you hope to speak English well, you must understand baseball. First you need to know the rules (规则). Then you need to try to find how it has to do with the daily life.”
He gave us some sentences and let us guess the meanings. Unluckily, I had never watched a baseball game before, so I sat quietly and just listened to the others.
After school, I took out a dictionary and asked Jake, one of my friends in another class, for help. Jake was kind and patient and he had been in the US for several years. He tried to teach me the baseball rules. I learned that baseball is a game between two teams of nine players. In baseball, a player on one team throws a small round ball at a player on the other team, who tries to hit it with a bat (球棒).
He told me more rules of the game, but the more he said, the more confused (迷惑的) I felt! Maybe one day I need to watch a real game to understand better!

This morning, I had an experience with a “rule breaker” during an English exam. I felt somebody was watching me a little too closely. I turned my head quickly and saw James who sat right behind me. My eyes caught his and he said in a low voice, “I hope you studied for this test!” I gave him a smile, not sure whether he was joking or not, and returned to my test. This time I leaned (倾身) a little more closely towards my paper, “I can’t see!” James said.
“What am I going to do?” I thought to myself. Cheating went against my beliefs. I curled (蜷曲) my arm around my answers.
“He’s your friend, and what are friends for?”
“You know it’s wrong.”
I tapped (轻敲,轻拍) the top of my desk, hoping for an easy way out of this matter. No easy answer came. I just knew I had to do what I felt was right, even if it made James mad. So I guarded (守卫) my paper so that he couldn’t see my answers.
When the exam ended, I stood there for a moment, searching for the right words to say to James. “Sorry, James, but you know me well enough to understand how I feel about cheating,” I said slowly and softly. “But maybe I could help you study before the next test” “OK, Brian,” he smiled. “It might not be easy, but I’ll give it a try.”
I felt happy that my friendship with James hadn’t been destroyed (破坏). Mrs. Archer would be proud.
