You may know that hurricanes (飓风) are tropical (热带的) storms that can lead to terrible waves, wind and rain. They happen during “Hurricane Season”, which is from June 1st until November 30th in the Atlantic Ocean and from May 15th until November 30th in the Pacific Ocean.
A storm continues through four different periods before it is actually considered a hurricane. First is a tropical disturbance, which has thunderstorms. Next is a tropical depression, which is similar to a tropical disturbance, but has winds between 23 and 39 miles per hour. A tropical storm is the next level, which has stronger wind speeds between 40 and 73 miles per hour. When winds reach 74 miles per hour, the storm is called a hurricane.
When a hurricane makes landfall, it can be very dangerous along coastlines because ocean waters rush onto land. When this is joined with heavy rain, there can be awful floods. As a hurricane crosses over land, it begins to reduce in strength. At this point, a hurricane can still cause a lot of damage (危害) because of high winds, rain, and flooding.
The centre of a hurricane is called the eye. While most of a hurricane has dangerously strong winds, the eye is actually a calm area in the storm. When the eye of a hurricane passes over land, people might think that it’s over, but before long the wind and rain increase again as the second part of the hurricane moves through.
Scientists use satellite images to predict (预测) where and when a hurricane will come on shore. During a hurricane watch, there is the possibility that a hurricane will make landfall within 36 hours, and people are advised to prepare for a possible storm. When a hurricane warning is announced, a hurricane is surely on the way, and will make landfall within 24 hours. People are warned to leave their homes and travel to a safe place.

When I first started using Chinese websites, I had some difficulty understanding their design （设计）. First of all, successful language learners are independent (独立的) learners. They do not depend on books or teachers. They find out their own ways to learn the language. All children should grow up happily and healthily. However, some children are facing or will face abuse（虐待）in their lives. They’ll be hurt or touched on private(私人的) parts of their body. We call these unsafe touches and they are abuse. Unsafe touches are scary and confusing（迷惑的）because they can seem playful or gentle. Even if it can be very hard to talk about it for children who experience unsafe touches from a friend or family member, we have to talk about it.
The following six rules are “The Protect Yourself Rules” created by Barbara Sinatra Children’s Center Foundation. Children can use these rules to know unsafe situations when they see them and to know how to get away if they need it.
Safe Touch, Unsafe Touch
We know safe touches are hugs from our family or high-fives with our friends. But unsafe touches are touches on private parts of your body. No one should ever touch you on your part of body that are covered by your bathing suit or ask you to touch their private parts. However, it is okay for a doctor to touch you on your private parts when giving you a check-up when your mom or dad is in the room.
Tell a Grown-up
If someone gives you an unsafe touch, they might want you to keep it a secret. They might make you promise or give you presents to keep you from telling. But you always have to tell. You can tell your parents or another grown-up what has happened. It’s never your fault if someone touches you like this. Keep telling until someone helps you and makes sure the unsafe touches never happen again.
Stranger Safety
A stranger is a person you don’t know. Most strangers are usually nice and friendly. We don’t have to be afraid of them but we should always make smart choices around the people we don’t know. Being smart means don’t be alone with strangers or go anywhere with them even if they seem nice.
