1     It is a big part of most people’s lives. There are social apps and sites like WeChat and Sina Weibo, as well as video apps like Douyin and Kuaishou. How do you behave when you use these apps? Recently researchers at the University of Sussex, UK, studied media (媒体) users from 10 to 15 years old. They found there are four personality types (类型).

2     They don’t have enough knowledge to keep themselves safe online. Their personal information can be made public and cause problems for them. To avoid this, you should check your personal settings on social media. “Friends only” is a good choice. Don’t share your personal information.

3     They are active social media users, but they find it much more difficult to deal with the life in the real world. Most of them are boys who like playing computer games and making music and videos. They often post creative works online, using unreal names. In fact, they should avoid spending too much time on the Internet.

4     They like sharing as well, but they are much more visible (看得见的) than Geeks. They might become well-known for their singing or dancing. But many of them, especially teenagers, share almost every side of their lives in order to own more fans. Being a teenage Internet celebrity can sometimes cause problems in the real world.

5     Most teenagers probably fall into the type, or people who are neither too active nor visible. This group prefers WeChat over Sina Weibo, as WeChat has private groups. They can’t express themselves well, but at least they make sure to protect their privacy (隐私).

Seeds(种子) is very important for farmers. Have you heard of the Seed Vault (库)? A lot of countries in the world need different kinds of seeds so that they can plant them again. There is an important reason for this. Sometimes plants can’t grow in a country (A) ________ bad weather or disease, so farmers need new seeds.

You can keep seeds in a “seed vault”. It’s a place at a special temperature. The seeds don’t grow, but they can live for a long time. Norway has the biggest seed vault in the world—the Svalbard Global Seed Vault—and it has seeds from a lot of different countries.

The vault is on the island of Spitsbergen. The island is about one thousand kilometers from the North Pole. It’s a very cold place so it’s good for seeds. Above the ground, the doorway is small, but inside, the building is huge. You walk down a long corridor (走廊), which is one hundred and thirty meters inside a mountain. At the end of it, there are three large areas with seeds. There are about half a million kinds of seeds inside the vault. For example, there are kinds of seeds for nice from Asia and Africa, 32 kinds of seeds for potatoes from Ireland and seeds for different tomatoes from the USA.

The seed vault has space for a lot more seeds. You can put about 2.2 billion seeds inside. The seeds can live here for thousands of years because the temperature is about -180C. So, in the future, humans can grow any seed they want. In other words, the seed vault is the difference between life and death.

You may know that hurricanes (飓风) are tropical (热带的) storms that can lead to terrible waves, wind and rain. They happen during “Hurricane Season”, which is from June 1st until November 30th in the Atlantic Ocean and from May 15th until November 30th in the Pacific Ocean.

A storm continues through four different periods before it is actually considered a hurricane. First is a tropical disturbance, which has thunderstorms. Next is a tropical depression, which is similar to a tropical disturbance, but has winds between 23 and 39 miles per hour. A tropical storm is the next level, which has stronger wind speeds between 40 and 73 miles per hour. When winds reach 74 miles per hour, the storm is called a hurricane.

When a hurricane makes landfall, it can be very dangerous along coastlines because ocean waters rush onto land. When this is joined with heavy rain, there can be awful floods. As a hurricane crosses over land, it begins to reduce in strength. At this point, a hurricane can still cause a lot of damage (危害) because of high winds, rain, and flooding.

The centre of a hurricane is called the eye. While most of a hurricane has dangerously strong winds, the eye is actually a calm area in the storm. When the eye of a hurricane passes over land, people might think that it’s over, but before long the wind and rain increase again as the second part of the hurricane moves through.

Scientists use satellite images to predict (预测) where and when a hurricane will come on shore. During a hurricane watch, there is the possibility that a hurricane will make landfall within 36 hours, and people are advised to prepare for a possible storm. When a hurricane warning is announced, a hurricane is surely on the way, and will make landfall within 24 hours. People are warned to leave their homes and travel to a safe place.
