It wasn’t a very good week. On Tuesday, Sam’s father lost his job. Then on Wednesday, Sam’s mother said that the house rent (租金) was going up. On Friday, Rosa asked Sam to go to her birthday party, but he wasn’t happy. He had only one dollar and that wasn’t enough to buy a gift. He knew he couldn’t ask Mom or Dad for any money — not this week!
“Well,” Sam thought, “I don’t have time to worry about this. I have a report (报告) to write, and I need to go to the library.”
In the library, Sam found there was a book sale. A book got his attention. It was a cookbook (食谱) of Chinese food. With his last dollar, he bought the book. He thought Rosa might like it because he often saw Chinese food in her lunch box.
The party on Saturday was a lot of fun. Rosa opened (打开) all the gifts and thanked everyone. When she opened Sam’s gift, she paused (停顿) and didn’t say anything. Sam wanted to know if she liked the book. When Sam got home, he got an e-mail from Rosa.
Dear Sam,
Your gift was the nicest. How did you know I would like a cookbook of Chinese food? My grandma is from China. With the cookbook, I can make Chinese food for her. Thank you so much.
Love,
Rosa

One day, two boys were walking along the road to school when they saw an old woman carrying a large basket (篮子) of pears. The old woman looked very tired. They went up and said, “Are you going to town? If you are, we’ll help you carry your basket.”
“Thank you,” said the woman. “That’s very kind of you.” Then she told them that she was going to the market to sell the pears. So the boys decided to lift the basket together. They walked slowly with the heavy basket, but they were happy.
The other day, I saw a little girl pick up a piece of orange peel. She threw it into the dustbin (垃圾箱). “I hope nobody would throw that on the street,” she said. “Someone may slip and fall.”

②Last year, I decided to go camping with my family. It was a fine day.We got everything we needed and set out early in the morning. After a three-hour drive, we arrived at our destination(目的 地).
③ We put up a tent together and lit a fire. Then I went to take care of my little sister, and my
brother went fishing in the nearby river. Suddenly, the weather became bad, and soon it began to rain cats and dogs. Dad shouted, “Get in the tent!” The small tent protected us from the heavy rain. Luckily, it wasn’t broken. Then I realized my brother didn’t appear. Without thinking, I ran to the river to look for him, but there was no trace (踪迹). I felt worried.
④I walked along the river, and suddenly, I saw some footprints! I was excited and followed them until I found my brother in the middle of the river, I noticed a long rope under a big tree. I threw it to him and pulled him up.

The first story is from Ray. “My cat, Tiger, hates it when I use my iPad because it takes my attention away from him. One year, I had a fall at home and was on the floor for 16 hours. During this time, I was unable to move and couldn’t get to the phone to call for help. Tiger stayed by my side until he disappeared under my bed. ‘What’s he up to?’ I wondered. To my surprise, he started to push something towards me. It was my iPad, which I didn’t realize had fallen off the bed and onto the floor. He probably didn’t know what it was, but he knew that it made me happy. Thanks to Tiger, I was able to communicate with my friend, Becky, who then told my doctor.”
The second story is from Colin. “Years ago, my friend Julius saved a bird—a wild ‘Mom’ cockatoo(凤头鹦鹉)from the side of the road and kept it as a pet in a big cage. She lost one of her wings, so she was unable to return to the wild. Soon two wild cockatoos came visiting and one ‘Dad’ cockatoo wanted to find his way into the cage. The ‘Mom’ cockatoo in the cage was soon expecting. But as she couldn’t fly, ‘Dad’ cockatoo built a home in a tree, keeping off everyone who got close to ‘Mom’ cockatoo. ‘Baby’ cockatoo would spend his days flying off with his dad, leaving his mom behind. She would sit and wait until they returned home each afternoon. The family stayed together happily.”
After reading the stories, don’t you think we should get along well with animals? No matter they are our pets or live in the wild, they have their feelings. We should respect every life in the world.

When the cards were printed, we gave them out all over the town. Pretty soon those cards were everywhere. That was what we wanted. We wanted our goal(目标) to be right in front of us, and for all to see.
Although someone doubted our words, it only served to encourage us to make our dream come true. Our school had never won a state champion in any sport—we decided to change that history.
By the time football practice started in late August, we were focused. With our goal in our minds, we stepped into the final.
Then it started to snow. A huge storm broke and school was cancelled. But we made it to the school gym(体育馆) and kept practicing.
Our coach received a call the night before the game. He told us that sate officers were thinking of cancelling the game and announcing that both teams were champions because of the bad weather. We were asked if we would accept that. "No way" was our answer.
The day came. We arrived at the football field and found it was covered in snow. Still, we began our warm-ups.
Both teams didn't score in the first half. We became worried because time was running out on our team. During the break, Coach Rengan reminded us of what we had been through to get to this moment. Then he pulled out the card, saying. "Do you want this?"
