Jane Goodall is a famous scientist. For more than 40 years, Goodall lived mostly in Tanzania in East Africa. She studied chimpanzees.
As a young child, Jane Goodall was interested in animals. She grew up in the English countryside and was always climbing trees or riding horses.
When Jane was 23, she got a chance to go to Africa. Even though she had never been to college, she got a job with a famous scientist named Louis Leakey.
On July 16, 1960, she began her exploration. At first, the chimpanzees ran away from Jane. But as time went by, they liked staying with her.
Every day, Jane would follow the chimpanzees, taking notes on their behavior. She learned many new things about chimpanzees. She watched how a chimpanzees made a tool. She learned how some chimpanzees became good leaders. She watched animals get angry and get upset. She wrote everything down so others would understand animals as she did. She learned that if you pay really close attention to animals, you will understand what they are “saying”.

He only wrote science fictions in his spare time after work. But it was during this time that Liu’s imagination took flight. He did what he might never have the chance to do in real life—wander (漫步) in space, fight with aliens and visit planets.
When he was 55 years old, he became the first Asian to win the Hugo Award, science fiction’s highest prize in 2015. Even former (前任) US President Barack Obama read his novel The Thee-Body Problem (三体). On Nov 9 in Washington DC, he won the 2018 Arthur C. Clarke Award for Imagination in Service to Society. It’s the first time a Chinese writer has ever won this award.
In his speech, Liu said he liked Arthur C. Clarke very much. He was a famous UK science fiction writer. Clarke’s works influence him a lot. It is he who leads Liu into the science fiction world. What’s more, Liu thinks his achievements in this area are decided by his own powerful imagination and his efforts.
Unlike other science fictions, Liu talks more about what life means to humans. In The Thee-Body Problem, for example, he tells of aliens coming to the Earth. And in The Wandering Earth, humans work together to solve the problem wisely as the Earth will come to an end.
Liu’s works aren’t simply daydreams. They are popular among the people who are unsure of the future. “People are locked in this small box of reality (现实), but science fiction is a way to open up our mind,” said Liu.

Li still remembers that after China’s reform and opening-up began in 1978, a German business man came to the city and visited their house. He made an offer of 5 million Deutsche marks to buy their house, but Li’s father rejected (拒绝) it.
The man then offered another 100, 000 yuan (about 15, 730 U. S. dollars) to buy the gold-plated carving on the front door of the main hall, but Li’s father rejected the offer once again.
“My father told us not to sell or divide the house just for the need of money,” Li said.
In 1997, the Old Town of Lijiang was successfully listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, following which many ancient houses were sold or rented (出租) out.
“Back then, businessmen regularly called on my door with wads of notes. Each day, the price increased; I can recall that the highest price offered was 130 million yuan for sale and 2 million yuan for rent every year,” Li said, adding that he rejected every single offer, just like his father.
“The root of the family and the original appearance of the ancient house should be completely preserved. Its cultural value is far greater than a lot of money.” he said.
Li decided to convert the heritage house into the Heng Yu Gong Folk House Museum in 2010 and open it to the public for free.
Things, however, did not come easy. Li and his wife faced hard life, supporting themselves by selling cakes for 1 yuan a piece and rice noodles for 5 yuan a bowl.
“Even during the most trying times, I didn’t take down the bricks and tiles to exchange for money.” Li said.

In winter, it is always very cold outside, while there are some people who make the season warm by offering help. This time, the 14-year-old teenager Wang Minran brought warmth to us.
That was a cold night and it was already 10 p.m. A 3-year-old girl played outside a restaurant and suddenly she fell into a 20-meter-deep well(井) by accident. Hearing that, people around soon gathered and tried to save her. Four excavators(挖掘机) were even prepared. However, the well was too narrow for an adult to get in. It almost drove the girl’s father mad. He tried to get in the well but the rescuers(救援人员) stopped him. As the girl’s crying became weaker and weaker, everyone was very worried but could do nothing.
Just at that time, Wang Minran appeared and volunteered to have a try. He was slim enough to get in the well. He was sent into the well from the mouth of it several times. Although it was very difficult, he didn’t give up and finally tied the rope on to the girl. Through his efforts, the rescuers pulled them out of the well and the girl was saved successfully.

After forty minutes, Robert fixed the car. The lady wanted to pay him. “No, that’s nothing, madam,” he said, “I just help someone in need. I hope if you see someone in trouble, please give him a hand.” A few minutes later, the lady saw a shabby (破旧的) house by the road. She remembered Robert’s words, so she stopped. The hostess (女主人) warmly asked her in. That was a poor family and they needed help. When the hostess was making tea in the kitchen, the lady left 500 dollars on the table and went away quietly.
