In many people’s eyes, plants are quiet and inactive. They can’t talk. They can’t walk. And they can’t think like us.
Or can they? A new TV show, The Green Planet, gives us a new look at plants. Shown on Jan. 10th on Bilibili, it uncovers the wonderful way that plants behave.
Plants compete against each other to live. Each plant has its own ways of protecting itself. In the rainforest, different kinds of plants race for sunlight. The forest floor is described as a “war field” in the show as only two percent of the sunlight gets through it. Some plants spread their big leaves to reach light. But they are caught up in a vine (藤本植物) that tries to get a ride. Finally, they are both over-taken (超过) by a fast-growing tree. As the tree has smooth hairs on its leaves, the vine can’t get a hold. Similarly, some trees try to protect themselves in other ways.
Plants also help each other and even communicate. In deserts, the roots of Euphrates poplar (胡杨) are connected. If a tree finds water, it will share it with others through the roots. Studies also show that plants use fungus (真菌) as a way to “talk” to each other. It’s kind of like how Wi-Fi works. If a tomato plant gets a leaf disease, it can tell nearby plants about it. How amazing the plants are!
The TV show not only lets us marvel (惊叹) at the magic plant world but pushes us to understand that plants are important. “Plants are the needs of all life including ourselves. We depend on them for every mouth of food that we eat and the air we breathe,” said David Attenborough, host of the-show. It’s time to look after wild plants just as carefully as our houseplants.

Is it autumn or fall? The third season of a year has two names, autumn and fall. Both of them were born in Britain. What exactly you should call that season depends on where you are in the world and whom you talk to. In Great Britain, it usually has only one name: autumn. But if you come to the US you’ll find that American people use both fall and autumn when referring to this time of a year.
Why do leaves turn yellow? In autumn, leaves go, from green to orange, red, yellow or brown. A chemical substance (物质) called chlorophyll (叶绿素) plays a role. Chlorophyll helps trees make sugar from sunlight. This feeds the tree and keeps the leaves green. But as autumn comes, the chlorophyll becomes less. The green color goes away, and now we can see the other colors in the leaves.
What is the special food in autumn? In autumn, apples are good for you and there is lots of other anti-inflammatory (抗炎的) food to try as well, such as cabbage, cauliflower (花椰菜), garlic (蒜), peas, and all kinds of lettuce (生菜).
Do some outdoor activities! Autumn is a perfect season, with a comfortable temperature for people to do some outdoor activities. Go hiking up the mountain or biking down the road in the countryside. Just give yourself a break to enjoy nature.

In our everyday life, we take many things for granted. Being able to see is one of them. However, not everyone in the world has good vision(视力).
The World Health Organization(WHO) has released its World Report on Vision. It says that 65 million people could get their vision back with a cataract(白内障) operation, but cannot get one because they have little or no healthcare where they live. In addition, over 800 million people have trouble doing everyday activities because they don’t have enough money to buy a pair of glasses.
For example, there are thousands of nearsighted African drivers who have difficulty seeing people walking across the road. This makes it dangerous for them to drive. And there are coffee farmers in Bolivia who find it hard to see their ripe(成熟的) beans because of cataracts. This means they can’t harvest(收获) as many beans.
This is mainly a problem in low-income countries, such as western and eastern sub-Saharan Africa, according to the report. A lack of eye care services is one of the main reasons for this.
In southern Asia and other places around the world, there are still cultural barriers(隔阂) when trying to get glasses. In some places, people believe wearing glasses will make one’s eyes worse. In other places, when kids start wearing glasses, their grandparents will say they are for rich people and not for village boys or girls, Public Radio international reported. These beliefs and attitudes must change before more kids can get glasses and improve their vision.

Leeks belong to the Allium family of vegetables, which also includes onions. Like onions and other members of the Allium family, leeks are a kind of vegetable with white soft parts and leafy green tops. The bulb (鳞茎) however is not round, but just slightly larger than the stem (茎) nearest the roots. The more rounded the bulb, the older the leek. Leeks are usually about 30 cm long, but they can grow much bigger. Do you know growing leeks can win you a prize? Some gardeners grow big leeks and hold competitions to find the biggest type of leek. People in Wales loved the leek so much that they made it their national symbol. As the story goes, about 400 years ago, Welsh soldiers were fighting in a war. They put leeks in their hats so that they could tell their friends from their enemies.
Leeks are especially loved by cooks all over the world, as they give flavor (味道) to lots of dishes. Leeks taste a bit like onions, but their flavor is much weaker. They taste especially good in soups. In France a leek and potato soup is eaten cold. Leeks go well with meat.

Plans keep our air and water clean. Green plants give us oxygen. Oxygen is part of the air we breathe.
Plants are also part of the water cycle (水循环). Most of the water that a plant takes in goes back into the air.
Plants give us a lot of the food on the earth. Fruits, vegetables, and grains come from plants. Without plants, we would not have bread, rice, carrots, apples, oranges, or bananas! Many people are growing plants to eat in their own gardens at home. Having your own garden helps the earth as well.
When you grow your own fruits and vegetables, you help cut down on pollution because big trucks don’t need to take your food to shops. You also help reduce the amount of rubbish because you don’t need to use bags for packing your food. You can just pick it out of the ground or off a plant and put it into a basket!
