Qian Haijun is a worker who deals with electric problems. In the past 23 years, he has spent all his spare time in helping a number of families with electric problems. Qian Haijun has made 500 cards with his name and telephone number and handed them out so that people would know who to call when a problem comes. Like many people, I have no clear idea about heroes. At some point, we all wonder if we need a hero and what a hero really is.
Although there are a lot of differences in cultures, heroes around the world generally share a number of characteristics which give us courage and make us want to learn from them.
A hero does something worth (值得) talking about. A hero has a special story to tell and people think highly of (高度评价) it. But a hero is not just the person with great power fame (声誉).
A hero has powers (力量) larger than himself. Some people want to live like a hero, and they have to experience life with new and further meaning. A sure test for would-be heroes is what or whom they serve. What do they want to live and die for? If the answer suggests (暗示) they serve only their own fame, they may be famous persons but not heroes.
A hero has a vision from the mountaintop. He has the power to move people. He creates new possibilities. Without Gandhi, India might still be part of Britain. Without Martin Luther King, Jr, Americans might take different buses, cat in different restaurants; go for walks in different parks, and shop in different stores because of the different colours of their skin.
There might be changes in society without a hero, but the speed of change would be rather slow. Thanks to heroes in history, they make the society develop so rapidly.

At the end of the school year came near, I heard that the teachers in Grade Three were worried that they would have Stephen the next year. I thought for a long time and found that I would be the best person to follow Stephen into Grade Three. My headmaster looked at me in surprise, but he agreed to my plan.
I will never forget that day when Stephen came to ask why he was in my class again. “Well, Stephen, you’re in my class again because I asked for you.” The little boy looked surprised. “You did? Why?” he asked. “Because I like you and want to keep working with you,” I answered.
Stephen just looked at me. After a few minutes, he smiled and walked to his seat. We never talked about it again, but we two together made great progress (进步) and surprised all the others that year. I know the great success was a result of Stephen’s knowing that I believed in (相信) him though he brought me a lot of trouble.
