Calligraphy(书法), in English, means the art of producing beautiful hand-writing using special pens or brushes. Chinese calligraphy is a traditional form of writing characters with a long history. It has existed(存在) for more than 2, 000 years.
There are five main kinds of traditional Chinese calligraphy. They are zhuanshu, lishu, kaishu, xingshu and caoshu. Through centuries of practice, Chinese calligraphy can be seen on the walls of offices, shops, hotels, and houses. Calligraphy isn’t only popular among the Chinese. Picasso, the world-famous master of art, once expressed, “If I once lived in China, I must have become a calligrapher rather than a painter.”
Practicing Chinese calligraphy needs basic instruments. They are brush, inkstick, paper, and inkstone(砚台). We call them the “Four Treasures of the Study”. It’s impossible for everyone to become a master of Chinese calligraphy. But practicing it more often is really useful and helpful. First, you can learn hand-writing to improve your understanding of Chinese characters. Next, it is believed that calligraphers enjoy a long life because the practice is a good form of physical training. Besides, you have to get concentrated(全神贯注的) and have a peaceful mind when practicing it. This way, you will get improved and your worries will be gone.
Some primary schools offer lessons to teach students Chinese calligraphy. There are also clubs of Chinese calligraphy started by calligraphy lovers. Chinese calligraphy is an important part of our traditional culture. We should pass it on.

The game of Go (围棋) is one of the four most popular games in Chinese culture. It is not only a competitive event of the mind, but also a board game of entertainment.
Go was created in China more than 4,000 years ago. Now many people around the world has shown great interest in it, too. Moreover, Go is still used as a way of cultural exchange among the people in many Eastern and Western countries today.
A game of Go has many meanings for real life. It represents a square world of round pieces in black and white. There are 181 black pieces and 180 white ones in total. While the board is fixed, the pieces can be placed in millions of different ways, just as life in the real world may take many turns. The proper placement of each tiny Go piece is nearly the same as how one might solve a difficult problem in life.
Go carries deeper cultural and competitive meanings. Different from chess and Chinese chess, in the game of Go, the players do not wipe out (消灭) each other’s pieces. Instead, they simply try to win a larger share of space while allowing the other side some space. The one who forces the other side into a dead corner wins the game.
A modern Go talent in China once believed that the final purpose of the game was to achieve peace. Instead of fighting as enemies, the two players work together and play an excellent game.

Tip 1 | You have to show up, which can be a challenge for many of us. You can show up as an observer(旁观者)of other interesting people and let that be a learning experience for you. Before you start talking, it’s important to just listen, even if you think you are a wise storyteller. If you are close to a group of people who are discussing a topic, watch their body language and see if they will let you join in their conversation. |
Tip 2 | You’d better go in the conversation with a couple of topics to keep it going, or questions to ask if there is a short stop. Simple things like “How do you know the host?” and “How did you get here?” are always good conversation starters to a certain extent(在一定程度上). |
Tip 3 | Don’t fear silences. Awkward(令人尴尬的)silences are common part of talking with people, just rush to fill them. If you don’t want to go on with the conversation, just say you are going to get another drink or something to eat, and find another group to talk with. |
Tip 4 | Relax. If you cannot keep a conversation going, or you don’t know what you should say next, give yourself a little time to clear your head. Relax, and then turn back into the discussion. |
