Chang’e-5 has returned from the moon to Earth. The mission’s success made China the third country to bring back samples (样本) from the moon.

Chang’e-5 was China’s third mission to land on the moon, and it’s first to get samples from the moon. There were no astronauts on this trip. Scientists ran the mission with robotic machines.

Chang’e-5 was launched (发射) from Wenchang Spacecraft Launch Site on November 24th, 2020. On December 1st, it got to the moon. During the stay on the moon, it got 1,731 grams of lunar samples. On December 3rd, our national flag was shown on the moon. After that, Chang’e-5 was ready to go home. On December 17th, Chang’e-5 landed safely in Inner Mongolia.

Chang’e-5 was the first mission to get samples from the moon in over 40 years. The samples will help scientists better understand the history of the moon and the solar system.

The Chang’e-5 mission has made many Chinese people excited and proud of their country’s success. The mission also showed that China has a first-rate (一流的) space program that is able to compete with other countries.

A trip to space

by Jerry

10 October, 2017

I’m so happy! Tomorrow I’ll be one of the first students to travel into space. The spaceship will leave the Earth at 9 a.m. It’ll take us to the Moon. I can’t wait.

The Moon is around 380,000 kilometers from the Earth, so it’ll take us about four days to get there. There’s no gravity in space, so we’ll all be able to float around in the spaceship. We’ll have to tie ourselves to our beds so that we won’t float away in our sleep! Without gravity, our bodies may get weak, so we’ll have to do exercise every day.

When we arrive, I’m going to walk on the Moon. I’ll have to wear a spacesuit to help me breathe because there’s no air on the Moon. I’ m going to take as many photos as I can, that is, if my camera still works up there well.

1. How did Jerry feel about his trip to space?
_____________________________________________________________________________
2. When did the spaceship leave the Earth?

3. Why did Jerry have to wear a spacesuit on the Moon?

4. How far is the Moon from the Earth?

5. There was no gravity in space, was there?

Everybody knows that human have been on the moon, but not everyone knows that the moon now is like a picnic area. The astronauts left much rubbish after they left the place. Scientists estimate that there are 181, 437 kilograms of man-made materials(材料).

Many believe that the full moon(满月) brings out the strangest acts in people, although science hasn’t been able to offer exact proof(证据).Research by scientists at Basel University in Switzerland has found that, around a full moon, people may take longer time to fall asleep, sleep less and sleep less deeply. Next time, if you can’t get to sleep, have a look out of the window. If there’s a full moon, it might not be your partner’s tossing and turning keeping you awake—it could be the full moon.

【推荐3】Many people know that rubbish is a big problem on planet Earth. What many people don't know is that junk has become a problem in outer space too.

According to BBC News, there are more than 22, 000 pieces of space junk floating around the earth. And these are just the things that we can see from the surface of the earth by telescopes (望远镜). There are also millions of smaller pieces of junk that we can't see.

Objects, like bits of old space rockets or satellites, move around the planet at very high speeds, so fast that even a very small piece can break important satellites or become dangerous to astronauts. If the tiniest piece of junk crashed into a spaceship, it could damage the vehicle (交通工具).

To make things worse, when two objects in space crash, they break into many smaller pieces. For example, when a U. S. satellite hit an old Russian rocket in 2009, it broke into more than 2,000 pieces, increasing the amount of space junk.

To reduce additional space junk, countries have agreed that all new space tools can only stay in space for 25 years at most. Each tool must be built to fall safely into the earth's atmosphere after that time. In the upper parts of the atmosphere, it will burn up.

Many scientists are also suggesting different ways to clean up space junk. In England scientists are testing a metal net that can be fired into space junk. The net catches the junk and then pulls it into the earth's atmosphere to burn up. The Germans are building robots that can collect pieces of space junk and bring them back to Earth to be safely destroyed.

"The problem is becoming more challenging because we're sending more objects into space to help people use their mobile phones and computers," says Marco Castronuovo, an Italian space researcher.

"The time to act is now. The longer we leave the problem, the bigger it will become," he says.
