A company called OpenAI has recently announced a new version (版本) of its AI artist, DALL-E 2. Given just a short sentence describing a picture, the tool can create different pictures in many different styles.
The name “DALL-E” mixes the name of the robot in the movie WALL-E, and the name of the famous Spanish artist Salvador Dalí. He painted amazing, but impossible pictures. Like Dalí, DALL-E 2 can create pictures that are unbelievable, for example, Teddy bears doing crazy experiments as scientists.
OpenAI has already changed the world once with its AI writing tool, GPT-3. GPT-3 was trained on a great deal of writing in many different styles. When it was released (发布) in 2020, it surprised people by quickly creating complete, well-written articles in different styles. It is so powerful that OpenAI has tried to be prudent when it comes to how it allows people to use the tool, to make sure that it isn’t used for harmful purposes.
DALL-E actually grew out of an effort to apply (应用) GPT-3 to pictures. OpenAI released the first version of DALL-E in 2021. DALL-E 2 is even more powerful. DALL-E 2 has been trained on huge numbers of pictures with matching descriptions, which means it “knows” a lot about how different things look, even when they’re shown in different styles, such as a photo, a painting or even a cartoon.
The user can select an area of an image (图像) and ask DALL-E 2 to put something into the picture, or take it out. Some artists are worried that it will take their place if a computer system can create such high-quality pictures so easily. OpenAI says the tool will allow artists to be creative in new ways.
To make sure the tool isn’t misused, OpenAI already has strict rules about the types of pictures that can be created with DALL-E. One of those rules prevents DALL-E from creating realistic pictures of actual (真实的) people. By now, the company hasn’t released DALL-E 2. Instead, it is allowing a small number of people to work with the tool to learn more about what works well, and to discover possible problems.

Hello, everyone! I’m Callie of St Julie Billiart, a nine-year-old boy. As you know, a big problem in the world today is the loss of energy. One way of energy loss is when people brush their teeth, they leave the water running. This wastes one of the world’s best resources—water.
To solve this problem, I have made a machine that controls how long the water can run in your tap(水龙头). This machine has a set of buttons(按钮)on it. On each of the buttons there is a word, for example “wash hands”. My machine will turn the water on for a certain time, and then automatically(自动地)turn off. It is called the Automatic Water Turn-er Off-er.
This machine is not too hard to work. There are no handles(把手)to turn, which prevents people from using it when they don’t want to use the buttons. I hope that this machine will solve our problem of water loss.
The Automatic Water Turn-er Off-er will cost about $250.00 to deliver and install(安装). This machine will help people who don’t know how long they should wash their hands or how long to brush their teeth. Both doctors and dentists will like it.
If you are interested in my invention, please reach my teacher Jean Stringer or me. Thanks for listening to my speech.

Wonderful Inventions from KIDs! Kids are natural inventors. They often create amazing things from simple ideas. Here are a few examples that might make you wonder, “Why didn’t I think of that?” | |
popsicles | Popsicles were invented by 11-year-old Frank Epperson in 1905. He forgot a drink of juice and left it with a small stick in it outside on a cold night. The next day it was ice. He couldn’t drink it, but he could eat it. It tasted good! These ice sticks became popular among kids in summer. More than a hundred years later, popsicles are still one of the best summer treats! |
earmuffs | When the 15-year-old American boy Chester Greenwood was ice-skating in 1873, his ears were so cold that he couldn’t bear it. He tried covering his head in a scarf, but it was still not comfortable. After some thinking, Greenwood made wire (铁丝) into two circles and asked his grandmother to sew (缝) fur on them. He then connected them with an iron headband (发箍) and the first pair of earmuffs was invented! |
crayonholders | When 11-year-old Cassidy Goldstein needed crayons for her painting, she had a hard time because there were so many small or broken ones. She found some small clear plastic tubes (管子) at home. They fit tightly around the crayons. She was now able to hold them easily. This is how she invented crayon holders. |

By calculating(计算), computers can tell us what could happen to things in the future. Let’s find out about some cool digital twin ideas!
Digital twin of bodies
Say that you have a digital twin at birth. It collects data from your body and can tell when you may get sick. Wouldn’t that be great?
Now, European scientists are trying to twin the human brain. The digital twin can show how the patients’ brains will change after different treatments(治疗方案). Then the patients can pick the best treatment for them in the real world!
Digital twin of cities
Will a new road bring traffic problems? Where should people drive slower?
Digital twins of cities can help answer these hard questions! Computer models can show if building or changing things will be good or bad for a city. This saves a lot of money and time.
Digital twin of Earth
Storms, droughts(干旱), rising sea levels—if we could know when natural disasters would happen, we could avoid many sad stories.
This year, the European Union started a new 10-year project called “Destination Earth”. It will make a digital twin of Earth. It uses AI to study climate data. This will help us know about bad weather ahead of time and save lives.

On a video online, fish-shaped lanterns move in the air as if they are swimming in the water. A group of teenagers in Shenzhen Yangang Middle School brought life to the fish lanterns with built-in AI system.
“The fish-lantern dance is a long-standing tradition in Shenzhen. Dancers carry lanterns and try to make them move like real fish in their performance, and this calls for lots of practice,” says Jiang Jiahan, one of the lantern’s inventors. So his team wants to lower the threshold with an AI-driven fish lantern that can move on its own, so that more people can take part in the traditional performance art.
Tan Wenbo, another inventor, explains that a sensor (传感器) on the head of a lantern will identify (识别) different pictures on the screen and give the result to a circuit board (电路板). The board, connected with two small motors (发动机) on the lantern’s head and tail, will drive the paper fish to perform different moves. According to Jiang, the rules of the moves follow the habits of real fish. “If a fish sees its food, it may dance more often in excitement. If it finds a good place to hide among, it feels relaxed and will move lower.”
“The old lantern model was made of card paper, but it weighed too much,” Jiang says. Then he made the latest lanterns with xuan paper (a classic paper used for Chinese painting) and iron wiring (接线).
Jiang says this experience makes him want to learn more about AI in the future. So does Tan.

We’re going through the Nevada desert, north of Las Vegas, for having a look at what its supporters believe is the future of transport. This is Hyperloop—an attempt to send passengers rushing at 700 miles an hour through a vacuum tube.
Many think that’s impossible, but this project came back last year of Virgin America Inc, with Sir Richard Branson becoming chairman. In this 500-metre test track, they say they have shown that the technology works, though they’ve not yet put any human beings on board. The head of engineering, a space scientist from NASA, sees no reason why people might be frightened.
Anita Sengupta, Head of Engineering, Virgin Hyperloop One
“The Hyperloop is a maglev train in a vacuum system. And so you can also think of it as an aircraft flying at 200,000 feet high so people don’t have any problem flying in aeroplanes and people don’t have any problem going in maglev trains. This is simply joining the two and allows you to be more energy-saving.” The Virgin Hyperloop team have said they could take passengers from London to Edinburgh in 50 minutes or cut the journey between New York and Boston to under half an hour.
Did you know?
The word ‘maglev’ is a combination (结合) of the words ‘magnetic’ and ‘levitation’. This is because the system uses magnets to levitate (使浮起) the train. This reduces friction (摩擦力)—the force that makes it difficult for things to move freely when they are touching each other—and increases speed. The first maglev train operated in Hamburg, Germany in 1979.
1. You are likely to see Hyperloop in ________.A.City of Las Vegas | B.Nevada Desert |
C.NASA Base | D.Hamburg, Germany |
A.human beings were put on board | B.the vacuum tube was completed last year |
C.Sir Richard Branson became chairman | D.scientists solved two problems of transport |

B.an aeroplane flying at 700 miles an hour |
C.a maglev train floating on the railway tracks |

【推荐1】Why do kids make seemingly “careless” mistakes? While grown-ups may think it’s simply a matter of not listening, sometimes it’s about a failure of metacognition (元认知).
Metacognition is to understand your own thinking process. It’s when you’re aware (意识到) of your own thoughts and how you learn and solve problems. It helps you realize what you’re doing, make a plan and change your plan if needed to complete hard tasks!
Alicia Forsberg, a professor at the University of Sheffield, said, “Metacognition is a skill that plays an important part in learning different types of materials in many subjects.” For children, learning how to use metacognition can improve their school grades.
Meanwhile, a failure of metacognition might lead to careless mistakes. Forsberg points out an important part of metacognition called meta-memory. It is the awareness of and control we have over what we remember and what we’ve forgotten. The problem for children is that they may not realize they have forgotten something. For example, a child who fails to complete a task may have forgotten the instruction (指示), and not realize it has been forgotten. Children believe that if they don’t remember seeing something, it was never there at all. However, grown-ups know forgetting happens quite often.
The good news is that there are things teachers and parents can do to help. Forsberg suggests asking children what they remember about the instructions for a given task. Even if they think the instructions are easy to remember, they may still have forgotten something, so double-checking is always a good idea. Besides, making children describe what they learned in a lesson can help them realize not everything has been kept in their memory.
When children develop a better awareness of their own memory skills, they can use that information to tailor their learning. That understanding might encourage students to pause (暂停) and re-watch a video they are learning from, or to look back at their notes. Children differ in their metacognitive skills, so some might need to go back and look at what they may have forgotten more often.
Metacognition is like having a smart helper in your brain, which makes learning easier. If children understand their own thinking skills, they should be able to help themselves learn more effectively and avoid those seemingly “careless” mistakes.
1. According to the passage, why might children make careless mistakes?A.Because they have too many materials to learn. |

【推荐2】Do you often have a headache(头痛) during a test? Are you worried about something that you can’t sleep well at night? If so, then you will know what pressure(压力) is. You will feel it when you are worried about something. This worry in your mind can make your body feel bad. You may feel angry, sad or afraid---all of them can make your life bad.
There are different kinds of pressure. Some kinds of pressure are good and others are bad. Good pressure might come to you when your teacher asks you to answer questions in class or when you try to get good grades at school. This kind of pressure can help you to do things better.
On the other hand, bad pressure will come if the pressure lasts too long. You may not feel well if your parents are getting on badly with each other, if a family member is sick, if you’re having problems at school, or if anything else often makes you unhappy. That kind of pressure isn’t going to help you. And it can really make you feel sick.
The best way to face pressure is to make sure you keep these in mind: sleep, exercise and food. If you get enough sleep and eat healthily, and if you exercise and leave time for fun, you’ll probably have an easier life.

In 1942, a group of people started an organization (组织) named Oxfam to help these people. In fact, everyone can do something to help if he or she likes. Here are some simple ways to help Oxfam.
Raise Money
You can raise some money for Oxfam. For example, you can help to have a fashion show or a sporting game at your school and sell tickets. You can make cakes or sweets and sell them to people. You can sell old books to raise money.
Buy an Oxfam Gift
When you buy an Oxfam gift, your friend will get a card and Oxfam will send a gift to a child who lives in a poor country. The gift can be something like a schoolbag, some clean water, a young tree or a coat. If some friends put their money together and buy a big gift, it may help to build a small library for a poor village.
Tell the People around You
Tell your ideas to your family and friends so that they can understand you better. And you can get their support and maybe they would like to join you. If you want to change the world, talking to people is the first step to make things happen. You can find people with the same ideas and work together with them to make the world a better place.
