Someone once said that only change itself never changes. That certainly seems to be the case with me.
I can measure (测量) my life by the changes that have taken place. And now I am deciding on another change. We are selling our boat after fifteen years of summers on the water.
We bought the boat shortly after we moved to Canada’s west coast. We then joined a boating club and we enjoyed cruising among the Southern Gulf Islands, meeting friends who likes doing cruising on the sea. Skukum, as well we call the boat, has carried us safely through both smooth and very rough water. At about ten meters long it is large enough to be comfortable to live on for days at a time. Also, the scenery in our part of the world is fantastic with sea birds, dolphins and even whales.
We feel it is time, however, to do something different. Admittedly, this change will be made partly because boating is an expensive hobby. Boats require a lot of maintenance (维修), use lots of gas and cost a lot even when they are sitting still (静止的). Beyond the cost is the feeling that we have done just about everything we want to do with the boat. We could continue to spend summer weekends on the water or we could make a change in our lifestyle and start doing road trips to places we haven’t seen across North America. As we have children and grandchildren on both the east and west coasts, driving trips will be more necessary. So it’s time to make a choice and, having now made it, it’s time to make a change.
Like most changes there will be both benefits and regrets but we feel the time has come. There is no doubt that we will miss the boat but we will also open a new door in our lives. Hopefully, we have made the right decision.

Everybody in the class laughed out loud, except Kelly. She felt her face turn red.
“Silence!” Mr. Black said, “Being a garbageman is a difficult and useful job. We should all be thankful to Kelly’s father.”
Kelly’s father came to walk her home from school as usual, but she didn’t run up to him the way she always did. When they got back home, Kelly went to her room and cried for a long time. Her father came into her room, “What happened, Kelly? Why are you so sad?”
Kelly told her father what had happened and looked at him. He didn’t seem angry or hurt. “Well,” he said, “They are right. Being a garbageman is a dirty job. Tomorrow’s Saturday. Come to work with me, Kelly.”
The place was really smelly. Kelly wrinkled her nose. “Don’t worry, kid. In five minutes you won’t smell a thing.” said her father.

Finding a way on my own
Henry Bond was about 10 years old when his father died. His mother found it difficult to provide for a large family. Still, she decided to send her oldest child Henry to school and buy him the books he needed.
At one time, Henry wanted a grammar book in order to join a class. But the book was so expensive that his mother couldn’t afford it.
He was very upset about this and went to bed with a heavy heart, thinking about what could be done to get the book.
As soon as he woke in the morning, he found that a heavy snow had fallen and the cold wind was blowing hard.
“Ah,” he said, “every problem brings a solution for some people.”
He rose, ran to his neighbor’s house and offered to clean the snow from their sidewalk (人行道). His offer was accepted. After he completed this work and received his pay, he went to another neighbor and offered the same service.
Then he went to several other houses until he had enough money to buy the grammar book.
