They’re everywhere: in coffee shops, on the trains, at work. They’re texting; they’re checking social media; they’re listening to music. And yes, they’re even work in. They are always connected. These are the “digital natives (数字原生代)”.
Born at the end of the twentieth century, digital natives don’t know life without technology. The first generation (代) of digital natives is now entering the workplace and changing the way we work. More and more younger people are working from home to anyplace. They’re bringing their electronic products into the workplace, too.
Digital natives share information worldwide. The younger generations want high-tech products that can help them do everything. They take pictures, send texts and photos, provide music and videos, and share them with friends around the world.
However, some elder people who are called “digital immigrants (移民)” are having trouble in learning. Some of them even refuse to use any new technology as they think that technology is growing too fast. Even so, there are still some elder people who are trying to get along well with electronic products. They prefer to share information with a small group of friends.
As more and more technology is entering every place of our lives, the digital gap (差距) between generations is also widening.

In recent years, China makes great achievements in 5 G. Now it’s making efforts to popularize the business use of 5 G. Shanghai is the first city in China to start testing the 5 G network. On March 30, 2019, Wu Qing, one of the leaders of Shanghai, made the first 5 G video call with Huawei Mate Smartphone.
5 G allows people to download and upload data faster than ever before. It is 100 times faster than the 4 G network. But 5 G doesn’t just bring faster mobile Internet. People can use it for many other things as well. For example, 5 G can make self-driving cars safer. Today’s self-driving cars have one problem —time lag. When a self-driving car “sees” an obstacle(障碍物), it sends the information to data center and receives instructions. However, it takes time to do that. That’s the time lag. With this kind of lag, the car might have an accident because it doesn’t receive instructions in time. But with 5 G, the self-driving car can receive instructions in a shorter time.
5 G can also be used to power the Internet of Things(物联网). This refers to a large online network that connects all things and people. Fast Internet speeds will be the key to developing this technology. For example, with the Internet of Things, your smart fridge could order eggs online when it notices that there are no eggs left inside.
The facts listed above are only part of what 5 G can do. Just as in the early days of the Internet in the 1990s, few could see how it could change the world. The same will surely happen to 5 G. With 5 G, many things do not seem like dreams to anyone. Now let’s get ready to say goodbye to 4 G and welcome the coming of 5 G.

B.the writer is worried about the coming of 5 G |
C.with 5 G, some of our dreams will come true for sure one day |
D.in the 1990s, all the people believed that the Internet would change our life |

On 8th September, 2020, the Guardian printed an article written by a robot called GPT-3. It wrote that “robot” comes from the Greek word for “slave” (奴隶) and humans have nothing to fear from robots, which are only here to help humans. However, the fact that a robot could write such an article has made some people feel even more uneasy. Where is the robot technology heading? Can robots and humans work together peacefully?
YES—they’re here to help humans!
Robots are created by humans for humans. Robots take on jobs that are too dangerous for people to do by themselves. Although robots might take some people’s jobs, they will create new types of work, and they will possibly create more jobs than they take away. Besides, robots are not influenced by feelings, so they are more reliable than humans.
NO—humans should not trust robots!
Robots are already taking over the world. Jobs that used to be done by human beings are now being taken by robots. Although robots are under our control now, that might not always be the case. An experiment in Switzerland found that some robots had learnt how to lie to each other. With the development of AI (人工智能), robots could start to act in their own interests. Wherever possible, human should do things themselves.
What’s your opinion on this matter?

Time flies when you play on your smartphone. But when you get down to study, one hour feels like a year. Why are we so attracted by smartphones but easily bored by studying? Because there is dopamine (多巴胺).
Dopamine is a “pleasure chemical” that makes people feel good. Our brains give it out when we eat delicious food, after we exercise or when we get a prize.
Compared with studying, playing on smartphones causes our brains to give out more dopamine. But why? When we visit media, we don’t know what we’ll see next, or who will give ideas about things. This “magic of maybe”, makes the dopamine active. We get excited wondering if we have messages from our friends. When our expectations (期待) are met, dopamine is given out.
And to find more dopamine, we continue checking our phones. Studying doesn’t provide such magic. Without this excitement, we get bored much more easily.
Can we do something to change that? According to scientists, apps can become less attractive if we turn off notices or change the screen colors to black and white. We can also set time limits on apps to avoid using them too much.
“As for studying, you could check your progress daily or weekly.” said Daniel Wong, writer of The Happy Student. “You could also search for interesting things in your textbook. Use what you’ve learned to make an influence in the real world. This will make knowledge much more interesting to learn.”
1. What do students feel when they study?A.Time passes more slowly. | B.Time is limited. |
C.Time passes quickly. |
A.When they stay at home. | B.When their expectations are met. | C.When they know what will happen next. |
A.Read the interesting part in your textbooks. |
B.Stop playing and find more interests in real life. |
C.Use what we learn from textbooks to do things in real life. |
A.Playing on smartphones can cause more dopamine. |
B.Getting more messages from our friends can make us stupid. |
C.Changing the screen colors to black and white can make us happy. |

Your eyes can tell you that a glass ball is round. But by holding it in your hands, you can feel how smooth and cool the ball is. You can feel how heavy the glass is. When you feel all these about the ball, you really see it. With your skin, you can feel better. For example, your fingers can tell the difference between two coins in your pocket. You can feel a little drop of water on the back of your hand, too. You can even feel sounds against your skin. Have you ever wanted to know why some people like very loud music? They must like to feel the sounds of music.
All children soon learn what “Don’t touch!” means. They hear it often. Yet most of us keep on touching things as we grow up. In shops, we touch things we might buy: food, clothes. To see something well, we have to touch it. The bottoms of our feet can feel things, too. You know this when you walk on warm sand, cool grass or a hard floor. All feel different under your feet.
There are ways of learning to see well by feeling. One way is to close your eyes and try to feel everything that is touching your skin. Feel the shoes on your feet, the clothes on your body, the air on your skin. At first, it is not easy to feel these things. You are too used to them!
Most museums are just for looking. But today some museums have some things to touch. Their signs say, “Do touch!” There you can feel everything on show. If you want to see better, reach out and touch. Then you will really see!
