Sally Ride was born in California in 1951. She was the first American woman to travel into space. Here’s an introduction to this great woman.
She loved to play tennis and wanted to be a tennis player when she was young. But after three months’ professional (专业的) training, she changed her mind. She went to Stanford University and started to study science. She studied stars and planets. She did research at the university and got her PhD in astrophysics (天体物理学博士学位) after several years' hard work.
In 1977, she took a test to become an astronaut. And then she was picked from over 8, 000 people. In order to realize her dream of going into space, she had to get different kinds of special and difficult training. She learned how to fly a plane, how to jump out of a plane as well as how to operate (操作) special machines.
Sally and four other astronauts flew a spaceship called Challenger on Jun. 18, 1983. She became the first American woman to travel into space. Later, she taught at the University of California. Then she wrote seven books on space for children, encouraging children to study science. Unfortunately, she died in 2012.

Mom said that the Chinese fan was a good choice, for China is praised as “the Fan Kingdom”. I couldn’t agree more, because it is more than a tool for cooling. It’s also an important part of Chinese culture.
I went shopping and bought three kinds of Chinese fans. The first kind was the feather fan for the teachers, which was made of bird feathers. It was the symbol of Zhuge Liang, a very smart man in ancient China. The fans I bought for the girls were silk fans. They were also called “round silk fans”. Fans of this kind were made of silk with paintings of beautiful women, birds or flowers. They were very popular with women of all ages. As for the boys, I picked the folding fans from Rongchang, a place in the west of Chongqing. The folding fans were made of paper and bamboo and there were great paintings and calligraphy (书法) on them.
At the welcome party in Italy, my new teachers and classmates were all excited to get the wonderful fans. And they were even more excited after learning about the stories and culture behind them.

Suddenly, her old mother pointed at something and asked Helen what it was. Helen looked at it and told her it was a sparrow (麻雀) . Helen was surprised why her mother asked her such a simple question.
Helen went on reading. Several minutes later, her old mother asked her the same question and Helen found it was the same bird. After a little while, the old woman again asked the question about the sparrow. This time Helen got angry. She shouted at her mother for asking the same question again and again. “Don’t you know how boring you are?” Helen said impatiently. The old woman silently stood up and entered the house. Helen continued reading her book.
A few minutes passed and her old mother sat beside her again. She opened an old diary and put it in front of Helen. Helen picked up the diary and began to read it. It said, “Today, while I was working in the garden, my little Helen came to me. Looking at a sparrow on a tree, my child asked me what it was. I smiled at her, said it was a sparrow and kissed her. After a while, little Helen asked the question again. This went on until she went back into the house with me after I finished my work. Little Helen asked me at least ten times and I kept on answering her and kissing her. I should be as patient as I can, no matter how busy I was. Love you, my Little Helen.”

One day, Frank was walking with his mother outside. When they came to a pretty garden, he called to his mother and said, “Mother, I wish I could open the gate and walk in.”
The gardener, being near, heard what Frank said, and kindly invited(邀请)him and his mother to come into the garden.
Frank’s mother thanked the man. Turning to her son, she said, “Frank, if I take you to walk in this garden, you must take care not to meddle with (乱动)anything in it. ” Frank walked along the paths and looked at everything, but touched nothing. Finding it locked, he shook it hard. But it would not open. Then he said, “Let me in. Let me in. Will you not let me in this garden?”
“No,” said the gardener. “I will not let you in, for when I let you in yesterday, you meddled with my flowers, and even picked some fruit. I do not let boys into my garden who meddle with the plants.”
Ashamed(感到羞愧), the boy walked away slowly.

The six-month stay for Chinese astronauts in the Tiangong space station will end soon. They face one last test-returning home safely. What needs to be done before they leave the station.
To go home after a long journey, you have to pack up. Besides their personal belongings (物品), astronauts also need to bring home experimental data and samples (样品) for further research on Earth.
The three astronauts also need to clean “the house”. They must collect leftover food and santiary (卫生) waste and waste from experiments. The waste is put into the orbital module (轨道舱), which burns up as it re-enters Earth’s atmosphere (大气层).
The astronauts must also put equipment back in place. It will be more than a month before the Shenzhou XIV astronauts enter Tiangong. They need to make sure that things like gym equipment are fixed to the walls for safety.
Astronauts experience microgravity (微重力) for long periods of time. This affects their bodies. They lose fluids (体液), their muscles atrophy (萎缩) and they lose bone strength. To ensure a safe return, they three astronauts do exercises to keep themselves strong.
Tiangong space station will be completed before the end of this year. Six astronauts will be sent there for the Shenzhou XIV and XV missions. The Shenzhou XV crew (全体成员) will fly to the station around the year’s end to meet their Shenzhou XIV colleagues (同事).

【推荐2】Chinese astronauts were sent into space with the Shenzhou spaceships. What is the life in the space station like? How do our astronauts live there?
What do Chinese astronauts eat in space?
During their stay in space, Chinese astronauts have over 120 different dishes available, from traditional Chinese food to ice cream. The astronauts hardly have to eat the same dish twice in one week. The food is prepared according to the astronauts’ tastes as they are surveyed for their likes.
How do Chinese astronauts wash themselves in space?
As water can’t fall from the shower in a zero-gravity environment, washing in the space station isn’t as easy as it is on the earth. Although taking a shower is impossible, the astronauts can use a spray gun (喷枪) to wash themselves before wiping (擦) themselves clean. Sometimes, wet tissues (湿巾) with soap also help.
How do Chinese astronauts stay healthy in space?
There is also a “space gym” in space station. Astronauts make daily exercise plans according to their different physical conditions. Besides, enough medical equipment is available for the astronauts to have physical checkups (身体检查) every four to five weeks.
How do Chinese astronauts spend weekends in space?
Living a similar life to ours, Chinese astronauts also have weekends to relax in space.
Chen Dong said they had different activities such as listening to music, playing ping-pong and watching videos. On weekends, the astronauts all call home. “I’m happy to call my family and feel close when talking to them. That helps me get over loneliness during space flight,” Liu Yang added.

Astronauts would face dangers both getting to and surviving (生存) on Mars. Let’s learn about surviving a trip to Mars.
What would it take to keep people safe and healthy on a trip to Mars? Scientists are already working on it though the trip may be many years later.
Over the last 60 years, many spacecraft (航天器) have flown by, orbited (沿轨道运行) and even landed on the Red Planet. However, humans could work faster and smarter than machines. That’s why the United States, China and other countries want to send people to Mars. But surviving this trip would not be easy.
A trip to Mars would be the farthest journey in human history. Mars is about 225 million kilometers away, so it would take astronauts at least six months to reach there. However, it only takes a few days to get to the moon.
While space travel is never free of danger, it takes a lot more health risks to travel in space for a long time. For one thing, staying in space for long periods makes the human body weak. Also, it puts pressure behind the eyes and causes eye problems. But gravity (重力) machines could help.
Then there’s space radiation (辐射) to worry about. It might raise the risk of health problems. especially for astronauts who will have long journeys. Scientists are working out the problems. They have found taking certain vitamins (维生素) can help.
Astronauts will have to pack light to lift off from Earth. But they won’t be able to get things they need like astronauts on the space station do. Astronauts on the space station practice for this by growing lettuce and other food in space. Engineers are developing 3-D printing techniques which could allow future Mars astronauts to build tools as needed.
1. Why do the countries want to send astronauts to Mars?A.Because spacecraft couldn’t work on Mars. |
