Reading can be a big challenge for tens of millions of people. They have poor eyesight or reading may difficulties. But OrCam Read can help them. It’s the first of its kind reading pen with a smart camera and an AI system. After scanning a page of text with the click of a button, it can read the text aloud to the user. You don’t need to connect it with the Internet, You can use it offline at home, work, school or even in stores when you need to read a price tag (标签).

Honey is produced by bees. But today’s beekeeping business (养峰产业) is not good for these hard-working insects. Bee farmers may kill them after getting honey because it’s cheaper than feeding the bees through the winter. To save bees, US company MeliBio has found a way to make the world’s first bee-free honey. They used synthetic biology (合成生物学) to create honey directly from plants. This kind of honey tastes just like the real one, and it is healthy, too.

Perhaps in the last few weeks you’ve heard much about Open AI and its new product ChatGPT, a chatbot or a chat robot that can answer your questions wisely. It is a type of language model that uses deep learning to generate human-like, conversational texts. In other words, it can respond to its users in natural language.

ChatGPT is not only friendly to its users, but also safe to the society. It is not the first go at AI chatbot. Microsoft launched Tay in 2016, but Twitter users thought it rude, which led to its downfall in the first 24 hours. BlenderBot3 from Meta fell down for providing harmful information. ChatGPT is trying to avoid these problems. It has been trained to communicate with users in natural language, which makes you feel you are talking with a real friendly man. Besides, ChatGPT’s own special system makes sure it does not provide any unsafe outputs. That means it will say no if you ask it a question which includes potential risks. Times describes ChatGPT as “a stunningly lifelike conversational language system” and “the world’s first truly useful chatbot”.

Supposed to be an improvement, ChatGPT can help with various tasks. It corrects grammar, makes texts into simple ones, and even fixes bugs in Python code. ChatGPT also can offer emotional support and advice to users dealing with stress. The only thing you need to do is to type up your questions. . ChatGPT is still in its early stages of development. As you might expect, there are some problems that come with this type of chatbot. For example, it can be a useful tool for students to cheat on their homework or tests. Sometimes, detailed answers may also mislead people into believing that the answers are true though they are not.

Even though there are still some limitations and worries, many in the technology world see ChatGPT as a look into the future. And now ChatGPT itself is more than a machine and Open AI seeks to understand what it can and can’t do. Whatever comes of this new age technology, welcome to the world of ChatGPT.

【推荐2】We use apps to order takeout, learn English and shop online. But have you ever imagined that we could deal with rubbish by using an app?

Dou Zheng, 15, a ninth-grader at The High School Affiliated to Beijing Normal University designed(设计) such an app. People can sell recyclable waste (可回收垃圾) like bottles to rubbish collectors. Just like ordering takeout, people can simply make an order on the app and enjoy door-to-door service. This March, Dou won the first   prize at the 36th Beijing Youth Science Creation Competition with the app.

The idea for her app came from a real-life experience. On her way home, she always saw roads that were blocked ( 堵 住 ) because of rubbish collectors. “ There are lots of water bottles and cardboard on the roads. It’s a total mess ,” she said.

After doing research on surrounding communities ( 社 区 ), she found that the answer to the problem was to change the way people and rubbish collectors trade.

Last summer holiday, she ordered a lot of takeout, which gave her the idea to design the app.   To believe that it would work, she did surveys on WeChat and in the streets. The results showed that eight out of 10 people supported the idea.

However, she didn’t know how to program apps. She read many books and watched videos to learn about programming on her own. “It’s hard. I have to know what a series of complicated codes (代码) mean and then write my own,” she said.
