We use apps to order takeout, learn English and shop online. But have you ever imagined that we could deal with rubbish by using an app?
Dou Zheng, 15, a ninth-grader at The High School Affiliated to Beijing Normal University designed(设计) such an app. People can sell recyclable waste (可回收垃圾) like bottles to rubbish collectors. Just like ordering takeout, people can simply make an order on the app and enjoy door-to-door service. This March, Dou won the first prize at the 36th Beijing Youth Science Creation Competition with the app.
The idea for her app came from a real-life experience. On her way home, she always saw roads that were blocked ( 堵 住 ) because of rubbish collectors. “ There are lots of water bottles and cardboard on the roads. It’s a total mess ,” she said.
After doing research on surrounding communities ( 社 区 ), she found that the answer to the problem was to change the way people and rubbish collectors trade.
Last summer holiday, she ordered a lot of takeout, which gave her the idea to design the app. To believe that it would work, she did surveys on WeChat and in the streets. The results showed that eight out of 10 people supported the idea.
However, she didn’t know how to program apps. She read many books and watched videos to learn about programming on her own. “It’s hard. I have to know what a series of complicated codes (代码) mean and then write my own,” she said. Later, with the help of an app called AppMakr, she finished it! “This app made designing my app easier,” she said.
Her app may go online next year. “I’m working on contacting companies to promote (推广) it,” she said.

What is it? Graffiti (涂鸦), of course. Look around cities in the UK today and you can see graffiti on buildings, walls, doors and even on buses or trains that have stayed in one place for too long. But where modern technology creates a problem, it also finds a way to deal with it. Last week, The Weekend West was shown around the factory of a small but successful company (公司), Hubdean.
Hubdean’s achievement is some special paints which are graffiti-resistant. How do they work? It couldn’t be simpler. Take any graffiti-covered surface. First, a treatment called Agproclear is used. Then, using a very hot pressure jet (压力喷嘴), this treatment is taken away and the graffiti disappears at the same time. Now you have a clean wall. But before this clean wall can be painted on by graffiti lovers, a new product, Agproshield, is used. This paint has a special surface which gives it two important advantages. Firstly, spray paint (喷雾颜料) won’t stick to the surface very well, and secondly, the whole surface can be cleaned very easily, just using water. Once the surface is painted, no specialist equipment (设备) is needed to keep the area clean and graffiti-free.
Not surprisingly, Hubdean’s products are used by both local governments and private companies all over the UK, and now orders are being received from around the world. This brings the company a problem, however. Can they increase production to satisfy the needs? Of course, they can build a second factory or work with a large international company to make their products. The future is looking good for Hubdean!

Sundrop Farms, based in South Australia, uses experimental greenhouses to grow tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers. The biggest challenge of growing food in a desert, obviously, is the lack of available water. The researchers at Sundrop Farms have gotten around this problem by using the sun to desalinate(淡化)sea water. It can also be used to control the temperature of the greenhouses.
Without depending on limited resources such as land and fresh water, Sundrop Farms has made farming a practice. This can increase the world’s food supplies. Another benefit of this kind of farming is that it can be done anywhere, thus reducing the costs of transporting food to distant locations. Yet another benefit is that it reduces the need for pesticides(杀虫剂).
Another experimental desert farm is the Sahara Forest Project, which began in Qatar in December 2012. Greenhouses in the farm are cooled by saltwater. Solar power and other technologies are used together to help make vegetation(植被)grow in the desert environment. As deserts have expanded over recent years around the world due to global warming, this project could solve the problem.
The result form the Qatar project were better than expected and in June of 2014, Jordan agreed to host another one. This will be much bigger than the Qatar project and the project members will have even more opportunities to test their experiments on a much larger scale. It is not clear yet that desert farming represents the future of farming but these projects have shown some success in the field.

How are you? I’m having a lot of fun here in New York with my family. Yesterday morning, we went to Central Park. In the afternoon, we visited the Statue of Liberty. And tomorrow we will visit the Brooklyn Bridge.
Today we went to a science festival. All my family enjoyed it. Dad liked it because it was free to go in! There were many interesting activities. That’s why I liked it. We tried on a space suit (穿航天服),and we made lots of model planes! Mom’s favorite was the clocks and she bought a beautiful one at the shop.
There were young people from many different countries at the festival. I met a boy called Alex. He comes from Australia and he is good at making robots. And he started his company (公司) to sell them! I want to start my company, but Mom says I need to finish school first.
The festival gave me lots of ideas for my high school science homework. I could do something about electricity (电) or about ice, but I think I’ll write about robots, because I’m interested in robots now.
See you soon!
Yours,
Robert

The museum was in Theodore’s bedroom. It had a total of 12 specimens. On display were a few seashells, some dead insects and some birds’ nests. Young Roosevelt took great pride in his small museum.
Born in New York in 1858, Theodore Roosevelt was not always healthy. “I was a sickly, delicate boy.” he once wrote. Roosevelt had a health condition called asthma(哮喘). He often found it hard to breathe. Instead of playing, he took a close look at nature and then read and wrote about it. Roosevelt’s interest in nature sometimes got him into trouble.
Once, his mother found several dead mice in the icebox. She ordered him to throw them out. “This was indeed a loss to science,” Roosevelt said later. Because Roosevelt was often sick as a boy, his body was small and weak. When he was about 12, his father urged him to improve his body. Roosevelt began working out in a gym. He didn’t become strong quickly. But he did decide to face life’s challengers with a strong spirit. That determination stayed with Roosevelt his whole life. And finally his body did get strong. As an adult, he was an active, healthy person. He enjoyed adventures and loved the outdoors.

That night, he wrote a seven-page paper describing his goal of someday owning a horse ranch. He wrote about his dream in great detail (详细)and even drew pictures of the ranch.
He put a great idea of heart into the project and the next day he handed it in to his teacher. Two days later, he got his paper back. On the front page was a large red F with a note that read, “see me after class.”

Jin Yong, also known as Louis Cha Leung-yung, was regarded as one of the greatest kung fu fiction writers in China. And for many people, Cha built a magical kung fu kingdom that they could escape into every now and then.
But this kingdom is falling apart now, because Cha passed away on Oct 30, at the age of 94.
Cha wrote all of his 15 wuxia novels between 1955 and 1972. While the values and tastes of readers have changed greatly in recent years, his books continue to attract people. His works have been made into movies and TV series so many times in Hong Kong, Taiwan and the Chinese mainland.
The characters of his books never fail to move both men and women. For example, in The Return of the Condor Heroes, the young hero Yang Guo waits for his lover Xiaolongnu faithfully for 16 years. believing that she is still alive, even though she has jumped from a mountain into a ravine(悬崖)
Cha's books bring readers joy, and Cha himself has equal fun creating them. "Writing gives me space for imagination, just like a director," Cha told China Daily.
However, Cha's real aim in writing novels is to show traditional Chinese values and qualities. "Kung fu novels must show fairness and righteousness(正义). The good fight the bad. Traditional values are shown through the characters and their stories, not by telling readers," he said.

She was shocked when she found out that her eyesight dropped from 5.0 to 4.6 in only a term. “A few of my friends have had the same experience lately.” Sun said.
In fact, poor eyesight among Chinese primary and high school students rose from 59.2 percent to 70.6 percent in the first half of 2020, according to the Ministry of Education.
To protect students’ eyesight, the Chinese government has worked out new requirements for school equipment(设备).They will take effect on March 1, 2022. For example, according to the requirements, the size of text in students’ textbooks should be no smaller than nine-point (小五号).
Teachers should also avoid using projectors (投影仪) or other multimedia equipment that are too bright. There are also requirements for desk and classroom lights. For example, these lights should give off as little blue light as possible.
Blue light is bad for our eyes, as it can kill the photoreceptor cells (感光细胞) we need for vision. Many of the electronic devices (电子设备) we use every day, including our phones and computer screens, give off blue light.
Chinese government has also taken other steps to protect students’ eyesight in China. In May 2020, the National Health Commission asked schools to make sure that students have at least two hours of outdoor activity a day.
By 2050, half of the world’s population (nearly 5 billion) will be nearsighted, according to a study published in the journal Ophthalmology. The main reason for this is that people’s lifestyles have changed. They spend less time outdoors and more time looking at screens.

• FISH
First-time owners should consider getting cold-water fish as no tank (鱼缸) heater is required. They should research what kinds of fish get along in the same tank, and be aware of life expectancies-some goldfish can live up to 20 years.
• RABBITS
Though rabbits, or nickname bunnies, may seem like a lovely choice, they can live up to ten years and require an amount of care similar to that of a dog or cat. They have their special diet needs, and often don't behave well around small children. Each year, quite a lot of Easter bunnies become homeless when families feel tired of them.
• GUINEAPIGS (豚鼠,荷兰猪)
These small animals are ideal starter pets. Their cages must be cleaned daily, and they require toys to keep their ever growing teeth in check. Once they're used to the new way of life, guinea pigs need daily exercise in a small room without cracks or holes for escape. They don't want to be alone, but if you get two, make sure they're the same sex or they'll have babies.
• BIRDS
Fond of a fixed timetable, birds require feeding at the same time each day. Cages should be cleaned daily and disinfected (消毒) weekly. Birds clean themselves by bathing in dishes of water and grow in cages big enough to spread their wings and fly a short time.
1. All the following pets are recommended in the passage EXCEPT ________A.Rabbits | B.Cats | C.Guinea pigs | D.Birds |
A.get some cold-water fish, which get along well | B.get some warm-water fish, which get along well |
