Dear Diary,
I’m really afraid of going to the dentist. I don’t know why, but I have been like this since I was young. When my mom wants me to go to the dentist, I always refuse.
This morning, I woke up with a terrible toothache. I told my mum about it. She thought I needed to go to a dentist. I had no choice but to go with her.
When I got to the dentist’s office, there were strange smells, strange sounds and people dressed in strange clothing. I can’t imagine what will happen on me. My hands were shaking. My legs felt so heavy, and it was difficult to stand!
Luckily, the dentist, Dr. Hu, was very kind. She told me not to worry. She helped me get up on the chair. “You needn’t be afraid. What kind of music do you like?” She asked. She gave me a headset, and I listened to music while she worked.
Before I knew it, my aching tooth was fixed. My tooth did not hurt at all. Dr. Hu smiled at me and said , “See? I told you it would be OK.”
On the way home, Mum told me an old German saying: Fear makes the wolf bigger than he is.

A man was walking through the woods with his axe when a small tree called to him. It said, “Hello, my friend. Can you cut down those bigger trees? They stop me from getting the sun. It is so crowded here that I have no room to grow my roots (根茎). I can’t feel the wind.”
The little tree held out its small leaves. It looked so sad. Then it cried, “If those trees were gone, I’d be able to grow. A year from now, I’d be the biggest tree here. But for now, I’m just a small tree.”
The man thought for some time and agreed. He walked over to the bigger trees and started cutting them down. He cleared lots of space around the small tree. Now it could be able to feel the sun and wind. It would grow bigger and become the biggest tree in that area.
But something else happened. The sun came first, burning (燃烧) the small tree, as it wasn’t used to so much sunlight. Then heavy wind and rain came, without the bigger trees to protect (保护) it, the small tree was hit by the rainstorm. Soon, the tree was almost dead.
“You’ve been quite not clever,” said a snake that saw what had happened, looking at the poor tree and its small leaves. “In fact, you brought this on yourself. If you stay with the bigger trees, the sun and rainstorm won’t hurt you seriously. They will protect you instead. If you just wait longer, you will grow to be just as big as them and you will be strong. But now, you are nearly gone.”

【推荐2】A poor traveller stopped under a tree to eat the rice and vegetables which he had brought with him. A few metres away, there was a small shop by the side of the road where a woman was frying fish and selling it to travellers who were able to afford to pay for it. This woman watched the poor traveller carefully, and when he finished his food and began to go, she shouted rudely, “You have not paid me for the fried fish!”
“But I have not had your fried fish!”
“But everyone can see that you enjoyed the smell of my fried fish with your rice and vegetables,”argued the woman. “If you had not smelled the fish, your meal would not have been eaten so pleasantly!”
Soon a crowd collected. Although they supported the poor traveller, they had to agree that the wind was blowing from the shop to the place where he had eaten, and that it had carried the smell of the fried fish to him.
Finally, the woman took the poor traveller to a judge(法官), who said, “The woman says that the traveller ate his meal with the smell of her fish. The traveller agrees that the wind was blowing from the woman’s shop to the place where he ate his rice and vegetables and that it carried the smell of her fried fish to his nose while he was eating, so he must pay for it. What does your fried fish cost?”
“Twenty-five cents a plate,” she answered happily.
“Then go outside together,” said the judge. “There the traveller must hold up a 25-cent piece so that its shadow(影子) falls on the woman’s hand. The price of the smell of a plate of fried fish is the shadow of 25 cents.”

Many people do not know about computers and they think of them as machines that children play with. They worry that children do not learn from experience but just from pressing* a button* and that this is not good for them. They think that children are growing not knowing about the real world. And they are very worried about that their children will lose themselves in the computer games.
But many people understand more about computers, they say that computers can be very good for children. A computer can help them to learn about the real world more quickly, to learn what they want to learn and think for themselves. And for the future, don’t we need people who can think clearly, who know how to get information quickly and use it well? What do you think?
For example, e-mail is very popular at this moment. Do you know about e-mail? E-mail is a way of sending messages to other people. E-mail is a fast and cheap way to keep in touch with friends and family. It’s much quicker than sending a letter. People who use e-mail have an e-mail address. This address must have letters and dots* and the symbol “@”meaning “at”. This is what an address looks like. People can send the messages across the Internet. It is quick, easy and fun.

【推荐1】It was my first full-time job as a teacher in a high school in Riverside, California. The Department Chair told me that I would teach a writing class. I felt very confident.
It was my first class. When I entered the classroom, I was surprised. These kids looked too tall and mature(成熟的)to be high school students! I still didn’t have a list of names, so I started by talking with them and asking questions. Everything was fine until I noticed a tall boy eating a piece of cake. Rule 1, clearly written on the board, was “NO FOOD OR DRINK IN CLASS”. I got a little mad and asked him to read the rule out aloud. He did so and he got mad too!
I asked him, “Did you understand what you read?” This made him even madder.
“Yes, I did.”
“Well, then, what were you doing just now?”
“I was eating a piece of cake,” he looked at me angrily.
“Well, get up, go outside and throw the cake away.”
And then both of us made a mistake. He said, “Here, I don’t even want it.” Then he put the piece of cake in my hand. The icing(糖衣)of the cake went among my fingers, making a real mess. I was so mad that I hit the cake on his hair!
The class started laughing and clapping. Somebody got up, went to the board and wrote “Teacher - 1; Mark - 0”. I didn’t know whether I was supposed to laugh or not, but I couldn’t help it. And then, Mark got up and left.
The story was all over the school later. Some students came to me and said, “I hear that terrible things will happen if somebody tries to eat cake in your class!” Oh, how embarrassing!
Now I still teach, but I’m much better at dealing with students.

In yesterday’s class, Mr. Peters talked about baseball. He said, “Baseball is one of the most popular sports in the USA. If you hope to speak English well, you must understand baseball. First, you need to know the rules. Then you need to try to find a how it has to do with the daily life.”
He gave us some expressions and let us guess the meanings. Unluckily, I had never watched a baseball game before, so I sat quietly and just listened to the others.
After school, I took out a dictionary and asked Jake, one of my friends in the neighboring class, for help. Jake was kind and helpful and he had been in the USA for several years. He tried to teach me the baseball rules. I learned that baseball is a game between two teams of nine players. In baseball, a player on one team throws a small round ball at a player on the other team, who tries to hit it with a bat.
He told me more rules of the game, but the more he said, the more confused (迷惑的) I felt! Maybe one day I need to watch a real game to understand better!

So with that experience I always knew I wanted to travel more. During school breaks and right after graduation, I took three other long backpacking trips around Asia, the Middle East, and Europe again. I realized I had visited 50 countries. My goal was to visit 100 countries by the time I was 30. For whatever reason, I thought that sounded cool. I ended up achieving that goal at about 25.
In 2006, I got an email from a friend saying that there was actually a record of the youngest to visit every country in the world. I assessed (估算) how long it would take me to beat the record and planned where I had to go. Even if I didn’t beat the record, it’d still be fun and I’d get to see the whole world. It turned out that it was a great decision, and I had done so much around the world. I became the youngest American to visit every country in 2011.
But like most people, I also needed to make money, so I got a Wall Street job and did pretty well. But in 2008, I resigned (辞职) my position in a large Wall Street company. It happened right before the collapses (倒闭) of several large companies, so it made me look smart, but it was pure coincidence (巧合). I didn’t resigned to achieve my goal. I resigned because I needed a break.
