You must have been to many places of interest and enjoyed all kinds of beautiful mountains and rivers. I am also sure that you have visited many old buildings covered with colorful pictures on the walls. Now imagine that a building with an exterior(外观)made completely out of corn and other grain! The building really exists—it is the Corn Palace.
The Corn Palace was built in 1892 in Mitchell, South Dakota. It was created to display the products of the harvest of South Dakota’s farmers, in murals(壁画)inside the building and on the outside walls of the building. The murals are made from lots of corn and other grain and grasses such as wild oats, rye, straw, and wheat. Each year these corn decorations are completely stripped down(剥下)and entirely new murals are created. The Corn Palace is a great tourist attraction and a meeting place for the community. Many events are held here and the most popular is the Corn Palace Stampede Rodeo. But the horses must be watched carefully so that they don’t eat the building!

For as long as we can remember, one of the most popular ways parents use to punish their children has been the “time out”.
It seems that it is a good idea: the child sits on his own to reflect (反思) on what he has done. Then, when the time is up, he will say sorry and learn from the mistake.
However, just because it’s something that has been done for years, that doesn’t mean it is the right thing to do. In fact, very often, children don’t sit nicely and think about what they’ve done. Instead, they need to be told a few (or many) times to go back to their places and stay quiet. They’re not reflecting on why they are in the“time out”at all. Instead, they’re probably just really angry, and so are the parents. In the end, both the parents and the children make each other unhappy, or even angrier.
What can parents do to change this situation. It’s believed that trust and love should be built between parents and children. So, instead of starting a “time out”, try something called “time in”. A “time in”needs both a parent and a child to stay close until both get calm. After that, the parent and the child can discuss what happened and solve the problem together. If the child can make changes, everyone can then move on.
As we all know, punishment and violence (暴力) seldom work and will never teach the children what the right way to act is. A “time in” can be the great time for the children to learn through mistakes. So,instead of punishing them, we can use chances to teach and guide them to a place of learning.
A“time in” may take more time, but it does work.

When difficult people express themselves orally, they usually want at least two things: they are heard and they are understood. As a good communicator should be a good listener, five steps are towards good listening.
The first step is cooperating (合作). How does a difficult person know that you’re listening and understanding? In fact, it’s through the way you look and sound while he is talking. You may help him to fully express his thoughts and feelings. You do this by nodding your head in agreement, making certain sounds of understanding.
When the person begins to repeat what’s been said, it’s signal (信号) of Step two: turning back. It means that you repeat back some words he is using, sending a clear signal that you’re listening carefully and that you think what he is saying is important.
Having heard what he has to say, the next step is clarifying. At this point, you start to gather information about what is being communicated. Ask some open-ended questions, which will allow you to find out what intention he is hoping to satisfy.
The fourth step is to summarize (概括) what you’ve heard. This allows you to make sure that both you and the difficult person are on the same page. When you do this, two things happen. First, if you’ve missed something, he can fill in the details. Second, if you’ve shown that you’re making an effort to understand completely. This makes it more possible to gain cooperation from him.
Having listened carefully, you’ve now arrived at the point of confirming with the person that he feels satisfied that his thoughts have been fully voiced. Ask if he feels understood.
When enough sincere listening, questioning, and remembering are brought together, understanding is usually achieved and a difficult person becomes less difficult and more cooperative.
