The traditional Chinese lunar calendar (农历) divides the year into 24 solar terms(节气) . Winter Solstice (冬至), or Dongzhi, is the 22nd of the 24 solar terms in the Chinese lunar calendar.    1    People in different parts of China have different customs on this day.

Eating dumplings, or jiaozi, is a common custom for many Chinese on the winter solstice, especially those living in the north.    2    

It is said that this custom is to remember Zhang Zhongjing, a famous doctor of the Eastern Han dynasty (朝代). He was the first person to make them.
