Although she loved her husband, she didn't let her husband know her plan. She asked for a new life on her own.

She said, “When I know I have a short time to live, I don't want to be a housewife any longer. I don't want to cook every night... I want to be free! I want to change my life. If I hadn't had the cancer, I would have been a bored person. But because of it, I would become a much braver and more interesting old woman.”

“I want to enjoy myself in the rest of my life. I want to stay with my children. I want to see my grandchildren. I dislike being treated as a cancer survivor(幸存者)．”

My name is Brad Li. I’m here today to tell you about my experience as an exchange student in the United States last year!

I stayed with a host family in a small town. My host parents, Mr and Mrs Hurst, were very (A) kind. They organized a lot of activities for me in my spare time so that I wouldn’t miss home (B) ________feel lonely.

However, to a certain degree, life in the US was hard to get used to. My main problem was with the language. I failed to understand much in the first few weeks because (C) 每个人都说得太快了. Though I soon managed to get used to it, I still had problems because they used a lot of idioms. For example, they often say they are “under the weather” when they are ill. (D) Their everyday English is not the same as what we learn in China.

Another difference was the food. My host family always had bread, potatoes and salad for meals. I really missed the dumplings, rice and delicious dishes from home. School was a big shock too. They do not require students to wear uniforms, so students can wear almost whatever they like. Some students have strange hairstyles (E) as well. Some students even have pink or purple hair!

Anyway, I have many great memories of that year, especially playing in the snow in winter, and playing baseball. At Halloween, I went to a party dressed (F) ________ Harry Potter. At Thanksgiving, we had a big dinner with a huge turkey.

It was an exciting year, and it was a valuable education for me. Now I understand more about American culture.

Bob is from Toronto, Canada. He speaks two languages (语言) —English and French. He thinks China is an old and great country. He wants to know more about China. So he wants to learn Chinese. He’s studying Chinese in Shanghai. Look! Bob is talking with his friends in Chinese.

A young waitress watched him move towards a table by the window. She ran over to him, and said, “Here, sir…let me help you with that chair.” Without saying a word, he smiled and nodded to show his thanks. After he finished his breakfast, the waitress brought him the change（零钱）from his bill. She helped him up and walked with him to the front door.

When she went to clean his table, she found a note on a napkin（餐巾纸）. Under the napkin was a 100-dollar bill. The note on the napkin said, “Dear miss, I respect（尊重）you very much and I can see you respect yourself, too. It shows by the way you treat others. You have found the secret of happiness. That is kindness（善良）. It will make everyone you meet happy.”

The old man who she served was the owner of the restaurant.
