The Eighth Nishan Forum on World Civilizations (第八届尼山世界文明论坛) started on Sep. 26, 2022. It took place from Monday to Wednesday in Qufu, the hometown of Confucius (孔子), east China’s Shandong Province. The forum provided a chance for a talk among different countries.

Over 600 people joined the forum online and offline and shared their opinions about the thoughts of Confucius. The forum was expected to help solve the challenges of our time.

Wu Weihua, a Chinese officer, gave a talk at the opening of the forum. He said that the Confucian thoughts of harmony (和谐) have provided guidance for the communication among different countries and civilizations. For thousands of years, these traditional ideas have always been in the minds of Chinese people.

People at the forum thought that the excellent traditional Chinese culture plays an active role. They agreed human progress depends on the diversity (多样化) of civilizations. Civilizations keep fresh through learning from each other. Respecting (尊重) diversity is the key to working together among countries in the world.

The Nishan Forum on Worid Civilizations offers us a chance to carry forward the common values of all mankind and develop mutual (相互的) respect, exchanges and mutual learning.

What Is a Chinese Knot?

Ancient and Modern Use of Artistic Knots

Even today, Chinese knots are rich in symbolic meaning, and they hold value when given as gifts or passed down through families. For example, in ancient times and even now, lovers may give a knot as a symbol of their love. The “true love knot”   and the “double happiness knot”   are given or used at weddings to express love and growing old together.

Along with being symbolic gifts or messages, knots are still used if people wear traditional Chinese clothing. They are used as jewelry such as earrings and necklaces.

The banquet had a hundred and eight Chinese dishes. It was such an expensive banquet that it could feed many commoner’s families.

Right now the Forbidden City is known as a historical site for tourists from all over the world. Everyone can go there. It is a museum with priceless Chinese antiques (古董) and treasures in it.

I really learned a lot about the Chinese culture and its history from this trip to the Forbidden City. It was like a dream come true to go on the trip and see the things that I have always wanted to see.

【推荐3】Kunqu Opera (昆曲) is one of the oldest operas in China. It has a long history of over 600 years and it is called the Mother of Chinese Operas.

At the end of the Yuan Dynasty (朝代), Gu Jian, an artist in Kunshan near Suzhou, worked together with other artists and they first created Kunshan qiang (昆腔). Then in the Ming Dynasty, Wei Liangfu, a great opera artist, improved it and a new kind of opera, Kunqu Opera, came out. After that, his student Liang Chenyu made more changes to it and wrote the first Kunqu play. Later, more and more artists started to write plays. In the Ming and Qing Dynasties, Kunqu Opera was quite popular in China. It was the second most popular opera (after Beijing Opera), because Beijing Opera was easier to learn.

Kunqu Opera has lots of wonderful plays. Many of them are still popular today, such as The Peony Pavilion (《牡丹亭》) by Tang Xianzu and The Peach Blossom Fan   (《桃花扇》) by Kong Shangren. The Peony Pavilion is the best of all Kunqu plays. It tells the love story between Liu Mengmei and Du Liniang.
