Monkeys live all around the world. They love living in trees in warm rainforests. Monkeys are clever and lovely.
Sadly, the world of monkeys is in danger. They’re losing their homes because people are cutting down the trees in the forest where they live. The warmer and warmer weather also causes lots of trouble for them.
Another thing to note is that monkeys are used in scientific research. Monkeys share a lot of genes (基因) with humans and scientists study them to learn about our bodies and diseases. But this raises questions: Are they being taken care of well? What’s right or wrong in the name of science? Keeping a balance is really important.
Facing so many problems, there is still hope. Governments are working together to protect them by planting trees to create new homes, making rules to reduce carbon emissions (碳排放), and looking for other ways to do research without using animals.
You can help too! Saving monkeys means we’re making a better future for everyone!

【推荐1】①Can exercise during childhood protect you against memory loss many years later? Exercise early in life seems to have lifelong benefits (好处) for the brain, in rats at least.
②“This is an animal study, but it shows that physical activity at a young age is very important—not just good for your body, but for the mind during ageing,” says Martin of the University of Toronto, Canada. “In humans, it may put off the appearance of Alzheimer’s (阿兹海默症) symptoms, possibly to the point of stopping them.”
③Martin’s team divided 80 young male rats into two groups, and placed running wheels in the cages of one group for six weeks. Around four months later—when the rats had reached middle age—the team taught all the rats to connect an electric shock with being in a specific box. When placed in the box, they froze with fear.
④Two weeks later, the team tested the rats in three situations: exactly the same box in the same room, the same box in a different room , and a completely different box in a different room.
⑤The rats without a running wheel when they were young now froze the same period of time in each of these situations, suggesting they couldn’t remember which one was dangerous. But those that had been able to run when they were young froze 40 to 50 percent less in both changed box settings.
⑥“The results suggest the amount of exercise when we’re young, at least for rats, has influence on brain and health—in the form of better memories—when we’re older,” says Arthur Kramer of Northeastern University in Boston, who has found that, in humans, exercise improves the growth of new brain cells (细胞).

It saw a dying flower smile happily and asked, “You’re dying. Why are you still happy?” “I’ll have my dream come true,” said the flower. “What’s it?” the bird asked. “I want to make fruit,” answered the flower. Then the little bird saw it: happiness is hope in the heart.
The bird went on flying and saw a lame (瘸的) duck sing a song happily. “You’re unlucky. How could you be happy?” asked the bird. “I helped a little duck stand up”, said the lame duck. So the bird saw it: happiness is love in the heart.
The bird kept flying and saw a spider climb a wall excitedly. It fell off the wall a few times, but didn’t give up. The bird asked in surprise, “You failed many times. Don’t you feel sad?” The spider replied, “If I keep on trying, I’m sure to climb up the wall. Thinking of that, I’m happy.” The bird saw it: happiness is faith in the heart. In the end, the bird knew that happiness is not in far places but in our own hearts.

A two-week-old baby hippo sat alone on the bank of the Zambezi River in Zambia, a country in Africa. His mother was dead. The morning sun rose and with every passing minute he lost more strength. Without his mother, the baby probably wouldn’t make it through the night.
Luckily, Ian Stevenson and his friends saw the baby hippo. They took him back, fed him milk and eggs. The young animal was saved and soon doubled his weight. He seemed happy and healthy.
Later, the hippo, now called Douglas, was moved to an ideal home at Chipembele, a wildlife center owned by Ann and Steve Tolan. They built a sleeping place for Douglas by a pool where he liked to swim. They fed him every three hours. Douglas enjoyed playing with the Tolans’ pet dogs and swimming in the pool. Sometimes at night, other hippos came from the nearby river to eat grass. At first, Douglas would walk into his pool to hide. “But he soon fought against his shyness and played with them,” Tolan says.
