It’s never too late to learn. 66-year-old Xu Baokun is a good example to show that. The grandma learned to play the drums and got popular online because of her drum playing (打鼓).
Xu comes from Guangxi. She is a farmer. When she was young, she worked in the fields (田地) all year round. But, with age, she had some health problems. That stopped her from going here and there. As a result, she lived a boring life.
Xu’s son teaches others music in Guangdong Province. Last year, he brought a drum set (架子鼓,爵士鼓,套鼓) home for Xu to play. At first, Xu thought playing the drums was too noisy. But after watching her son play a few times, she became interested in it and decided to learn to play.
Because Xu knew nothing about music, ▲ . She spent lots of time practicing playing the drums every day. Now she can play many songs. What’s more, she is healthier than before thanks to drum playing.
Xu’s son put her videos (录像) of drum playing online. To his surprise, Xu quickly got popular. Now Xu plays at some weddings (婚礼) and the TV station. She is anxious before she plays in front of others, but when she sees the drum set, she knows she will do a good job.
“Age is just a number,” Xu said. “I’ll learn more beautiful music to bring happiness to more people.”

Harry Small, a seven-year-old schoolboy in Scotland. He has written a short poem to thank these brave people. The poem is titled ________:
Heroes come in many forms and they don’t always wear capes;
A smile or a word is sometimes all it takes.
They could be a lifesaver: they could be a carer.
They put themselves at risk, doing their bit.
Heroes come in many forms and this is true;
I’m writing this poem to thank every one of you.
THANK YOU
By Henry Small
Harry wrote the poem all by himself. He then typed it on his computer. The boy even learned about phonics and tried to read his poem. A video of him reading the poem has received hundreds of likes on social media. His mother, Michelle, says she is proud of her son.
In order to control the spread of COVID-19, schools across Scotland have been closed. Teachers have been teaching online so that their students can continue their learning at home. Jim King, a leader at Harry’s school, says he is glad to see that many children are making the best out of this terrible period. And they are trying not to let the shutdown of their schools influence their learning. Harry’s poem is a great example of this.
Mr. King calls on other children to follow Harry’s example. Maybe you can also try to write a short poem to thank the unsung heroes around you. Why not give it a go?

We went to visit a friend in hospital last week. When Jack’s mobile phone rang, it was my mother calling from my home. She asked if I had lost my mobile phone. I checked my bag. It was gone!
I used Jack’s phone to call my number. A boy answered it. “I found your phone in the mall!” he said excitedly. “I’m Rhys. I have been trying to find you, but because it was getting late, I decided to leave.” He gave me the address of a coffee shop near his home.
Later that evening, I went to meet him there. I was afraid to go alone, worrying he was a cheat, so Jack came along. After driving 10 km, we got to the coffee shop.
As soon as I saw him, my worries were gone. Rhys was just a young boy. “How did you tell my mom?” I asked. He explained that when he found my mobile phone by the roadside, he started calling people in my list of contacts (通讯录). But they only had my mobile phone number. That didn’t help. He’d called many names, starting with the letter A. Finally he got Adam, one of my friends. Adam called my house.
I was happy to get my phone back with all the phone numbers, messages and photos in it. I thanked Rhys and offered him some money, but he refused. He’s really a good boy.

I decide not to be a helicopter (直升机) mother, because experience as a mother and professor has taught me how badly that can result. Instead, I prefer a more hands-off way. From the time Ann turned 16, I don’t want to know her work and life schedule any longer.
But that’s not what I see at Drexel University where I teach. Most of my students talk to their parents three times a day or more. One student’s mother called her son because she didn’t hear from him for a few days. The son was in the library so he whispered “hello”. The mother doubted that he was drinking, and insisted on asking him to take a picture of himself. Holding a newspaper with that day’s date, the son had to take a photo of himself and sent it to his mother in order to prove that he wasn’t telling a lie.
I always think that my students should depend on themselves. I tell them that I will not check whether they miss classes and finish homework or not, because they are independent thinkers and they should take responsibility for their own choices. But their parents don’t treat them like me. I know a mother. She puts her eyes on her son too much. She hopes he will walk by the camera so that she can know what he is doing. Another mother checks her son’s credit card daily. However, I never do that. My daughters only come to me with important things when they need my decision. I think that’s because I give them space.
Many parents try to find if their kids are hiding from them. But we have to learn to respect boundaries (界限), even when technology is so powerful now. So I am going to do my best not to be a helicopter parent.
1. The underlined phrase “a helicopter mother” in Paragraph 1 means “________”.A.a mother who treats the child as an independent being. |

C.To show that space is needed for children to become independent. |
D.To show that some helicopter mothers love their children so much. |
