Hello! My name is Li Yumei and I’m 13 years old. I am from Beijing. Here is a photo of some boys and girls. They are from the same place. Their families are very poor, so they don’t have much money to buy school things. I have five friends and they see the photo, too. We want to help them. These things are for them——six pencil boxes, six pencils, six rulers, six erasers, eight schoolbags and nine picture books. Our teachers help them, too. They give them two computers, five dictionaries and nine maps.
Do you want to help the boys and girls? Call me at 468-3399. Thanks!

◆Teach you new skills.
From helping making websites to teaching foreigners your native language, or to making plans for charity, volunteering can really be almost anything. It means that when you get involved in charity work, a lot of time you will face challenges.
◆Teach you what truly matters.
It’s a great way to find new perspectives (角度) on life. When you’ve been at it for a while, you just might view yourself in a different way.
◆
Maybe it’s not so surprising, but what might surprise you is how true these friends are. Some of my long-term friends are people I’ve met through volunteering. I’m not the kind of guy that makes friends just for connections, but sometimes it’s very convenient to have a wide network.

This year, a very sweet old lady that I cared for, Alice, had a difficult time. She got dementia and so she had been in the hospital twice. In November I was finally able to get her back to her “home”.
Alice thought her daughter was coming to visit her on Christmas day and that they were going to have the whole family together like the old days. When she finally realized (意识) that that happy moment was not going to happen, she was very sad. Knowing that her daughter was coming after Christmas was not enough to make her feel happy, I hated the idea of her being alone on the holiday!
On Christmas Eve, I gave her a surprise by asking if she would like to go to a candlelight service at church that night.
Instead of taking her to my church, I took her to her old neighborhood church where all her friends were. We got there early and I got her a seat where her friends could see her as they came in. Then soon some of her friends came to the church and they rushed over to greet her and sit with her.
The candlelight service was beautiful and Alice got a lot of love from her old and new friends there.
The truth of the story is that I am the one who got the best gift: the smile on Alice’s face.

One summer day, I filled an exercise book with different raindrop shapes in order to prove that the way a rainbow (彩虹) worked was impossible. And all I could prove was that rainbows were unbelievable. However, every second day a shower would mock me with another rainbow. My teacher thought I simply tried to make him look like a fool, so I was punished. Actually, I wasn’t trying to mock my teacher. I just wanted to find out how rainbows worked.
It’s hard when you are misunderstood. We have all been there, said things too quickly with too little thought. Those who hear our words don’t want to understand our thoughts. And people judge (判断) our actions without trying to understand the background behind the decisions.
We see the impossible and we want to know who, how, where or what. The search drives us, and we question, we look harder, and we trouble those people around us with endless details of the things we see. Sometimes, your opinion of something impossible can’t be seen by others. As a result, we are slowly taught to doubt what we see, even to the point we doubt ourselves. But in our opinion, our voice matters. And we believe our actions are important and the things we see are worth seeing. We cannot bear to be told our actions are wrong and we cannot bear to be told we are blind, and that what we see is not there. In fact, it doesn’t make us feel good. Having got the point of being misunderstood, I learned to let it go and felt much better.
