Slavery (奴隶制) was one of the darkest periods in American history. It cannot be ignored (忽视). This term, we are reading a novel called The Longest Memory by British author Fred D’Aguiar. Its story is told through the eyes of many different people. From their narration (讲述), we can see what the society looked like during the period before the American Civil War.
The Longest Memory tells the story of a brave and wise young slave, Chapel, who falls in love with the daughter of a plantation owner (种植园主). They decide to go to the north, where black men can marry white women. However, the boy’s father, White Chapel, doesn’t agree with him and causes him to be caught. Chapel is then whipped (鞭打) to death.
Why does White Chapel report his son’s plan to the plantation owner? This is one thing that confuses many readers. But as we understand each character in depth, we can find it out White Chapel teaches young slaves to follow their owners. So his owner respects him a lot. He starts to think that slaves can live comfortably as long as they listen to the plantation owner.
This thought is based on (以……为依据) the idea that slavery will never end. However, Chapel is educated. He sees a more colourful world in the books he reads and wants to be free. He represents (代表) the change for the future, which his dad fears. White Chapel’s thought might be a good way for slaves to protect themselves. But that doesn’t change the fact that slavery is inhumane (不人道的) and must end. Pioneers like Chapel should be encouraged.

Volunteers give their time to help people. For example, they work in schools or hospitals, or they do something helpful for the environment.
Pauline Jones, 18, lives in Cardiff, Wales. Next year she wants to go to university to study Chinese, but now she’s living in Belize. Pauline says, “I’m working with other people here to save the coral reefs (珊瑚礁) in the sea near Belize. The reefs here are beautiful, but if the sea water is very polluted, the coral dies. I’m helping to do research (研究) on the coral and the fish that live around the reefs. All over the world, coral reefs are dying. We need to do something about the problem before it’s too late.”
“I’m staying with a family here and I help do some housework. I don’t get any money, but that’s OK. I love my work here, and I’m learning a lot about the people of Belize—and myself!

Unfortunately, the wrong turn took us toward a bridge and, we had no way of turning back. My brother had to pay to cross. He was clearly frustrated by the mistake and the needless waste of 54.
As we drove forward, my brother noticed an old black Mustang (福特野马汽车) by the side of the road. A young guy was standing nearby trying to phone someone. I was busy trying to figure out which way we went next but my brother pulled over and asked the guy if he needed any help. And he did. He had a flat tire.
My brother helped him change the flat. We started getting to know the young man who was from a rough (粗糙的) neighborhood nearby. He said that this has been a bad week for him; earlier he had gotten into a minor (不严重的) ear accident, and now this flat on his way home from work. But he called us “a breath of fresh air” and kept thanking us because he really would have been suck if we hadn’t come along. After we had finished the job, he thanked us again and pulled out 520 to try to give it to us. “No,” I said. “We were never supposed to even get on that bridge. We took a wrong turn. But now we know why we did. It was to help you. Thank you for turning our mistake into an opportunity to serve.”
What I loved most was watching my brother throughout this process. He was able to turn his annoyance over the mistake into positive energy. He was able to see a chance to help (which I totally missed!) even in an otherwise negative situation, which can only come from a calm mind and an open heart. That was the bridge we were meant to cross.

Does it pay well? My answers are pretty standard as well: Yes, sometimes, once in a while, and… kind of. The life of an extra is both more interesting and more boring than you might imagine.
Extras, who play the people in crowds, on streets, or in the background of indoors scenes, can come from all walks of life. Unlike many extras, I'm a trained actor. I do get real speaking roles, but work can be hard to come by if you're not a popular star. I'm registered (注册) with an agency that deals only with extras, so I get calls all the time. The agency explains who I'll be someone in a crowd, a member of a jury, a clerk and tells me where to go. Call time is usually bright and early, so I try to get to bed at a reasonable hour.
Sometimes being an extra is a "hurry up and wait" job. In my first extra role, I was one of a group of office workers who come out of a building just as a car explodes (爆炸) in the street. We waited for hours for the scene to be shot, and then went in and out of the building about fifty times, trying to act terrified by an explosion which was not real. Then we had lunch, changed clothes, and spent the afternoons as customers in a department store.
It may sound like I don’t enjoy the work, but I do. Being part of the background in a convincing (令人信服的) way is challenging, and being on a film or TV set is always fascinating. A lot of famous actors don't even notice the extras, but the ones who do make the job a lot of fun for everyone. As for the money, it's nothing compared to what the big actors make, but it pretty much pays the bills. And, as a bonus, I've beaten my high scores on all my phone games, thanks to all the time I spend sitting around, waiting for something to happen.

It looked like it would fill and sink (下沉), and Anne could not swim! Just then, the boat hit an old wooden pile (木桩). Anne jumped out of the boat and grabbed it. She held on and waited for the girls to find her. The boat went under the bridge and then sank. Ruby, Jane, and Diana watched it sink and were sure that Anne had gone down with it. They screamed and screamed and ran off to find help. Poor Anne was still hanging on to the wooden pile. The minutes passed by, each seeming like an hour to the unlucky Lily Girl.

“Anne,” he said, “I’m very sorry I called your hair ‘carrots’. I think your hair is very pretty now. Let’s be fiends.” Anne thought for a moment. Then, she remembered that she hated Gilbert Blythe! She would never forgive (原谅) him! “No,” she said coldly, “I shall never be friends with you, Gilbert Blythe.” “All right!” Gilbert jumped back into the boat, his face red. “I’ll never ask you to be friends again, Anne Shirley. ”
As Anne walked away, she regretted (遗憾, 后悔) that she had not answered Gilbert differently. She wanted to cry.

The letter has been read by so many students. We had never thought that the text written in old Chinese could be so beautifully read in another language. As a result, foreigners begin to show interest in Romance of the Three Kingdoms, translated by C.H. Brewitt Tailor and Robert E. Hegel.
Earlier in November, 1979, pupils in England were able to watch a new TV program called Monkey. Most of them were hearing the story for the first time. However, the story of the Monkey King isn’t new to Chinese children in the traditional Chinese book Journey to the West.
As soon as the TV program came out, Western children became interested in reading this story because the clever Monkey King keeps fighting to help the weak and never gives up.
Chinese scholars (学者) should do a better job of introducing Chinese literature (文学) to the rest of the world. At the same time, we could encourage Western schools to try something different.
Reading international literature is a good way of understanding other people in the world. And the more we understand each other, the more beautiful the world will be.

Zhou Yu thought it was impossible, but Zhuge Liang said, “Give me three days.” Then he asked Lu Su to lend him 20 boats, and the soldiers put some scarecrows (稻草人) in line on the boats. He reminded Lu Su not to tell Zhou Yu what was happening.
When Lu Su came again to see Zhuge Liang, he found nothing unusual. Nothing happened on the second day, either. On the early morning of the third day, Zhuge Liang invited Lu Su for a boat ride: The 20 boats were tied together with strong ropes. Zhuge Liang’s fleet went towards the camp of Cao Cao. The surface of the river was covered with thick mist (雾) all over. People could hardly see each other on the river. When Zhuge Liang’s fleet got close to the Cao camp before dawn (黎明), Zhuge Liang ordered his soldiers to shout and beat drums heavily to pretend an attack (进攻). But Zhuge Liang and Lu Su only sat inside one boat drinking wine to enjoy themselves.
As soon as the Cao camp heard the shouting and drum beating, they mistook it for a surprise attack by the Zhou Yu camp. Since they could see nobody on the river, they had to order 3, 000 soldiers to shoot arrows to stop the unexpected attack. The front of the scarecrows was quickly full of arrows. After a while, Zhuge Liang had his fleet turned around to get the other side of the scarecrows to face the Cao camp. When both sides were full of arrows, the day broke. Zhuge Liang ordered his soldiers to return. The soldiers shouted in excitement, “Thank you, Cao Cao, for your arrows.” After they got back to their camp, they collected more than 100,000 arrows in total from the scarecrows.
