A 12-man Chinese team landed on the Antarctic icecap peak (南极冰盖最高点) on January 18th. They are the first people to reach the peak of Dome A (海穹A). It is 4,039 meters above sea level.
The team built a station there to study the changes of the weather, get ice samples (标本) from 150 meters to 200 meters below, and do other studies. So far, the team has got nearly 100-meter-long ice samples from a place about 130 meters under the icecap peak.
It is the first time that people have been able to get samples from the icecap peak in Antarctica and it is very important for people to study the weather changes and environment changes in the area.
The Chinese scientists have also built a weather study system (系统) at the peak. The system can send out information about the temperature, such as how strong the wind is, and many other things about the weather.
The Antarctica icecap makes up (组成) 70% of the earth’s freshwater (淡水). By studying Dome A, scientists can get the lowest temperature of the earth and other information about the world’s weather changes. We can’t get this information from other places on the earth because Dome A is the best place for this kind of studies. So it is very important to land on the peak of Dome A.

Thousands of years ago, Chinese poet Qu Yuan (about 340-278 BC) wrote the poem Tianwen, meaning Quest for Heavenly Truth. He came up with a series of questions about the sky, stars, nature, myths and the world around us. The poem showed his doubts about traditional ideas and the spirit of finding the truth.
Inspired by the great poet, China has named its upcoming series of planetary exploration missions (行星探测任务) after the poem. The first one in the series-a Mars exploration mission-has been named Tianwen 1, the China National Space Administration (CNSA) said on April 24, China’s Space Day. This shows China’s desire (渴望) to explore the universe and discover its secrets.
China has been making great progress in space exploration. As early as 1970, China launched its first man-made Earth satellite (卫星), becoming the fifth country in the world to launch a man-made satellite independently. Since 2003, China has carried out six Shenzhou manned missions and launched two space labs into Earth’s orbit (轨道). China’s moon exploration missions-the Chang’e series-started in 2007. In December 2018, China became the first country to send the probe (探测器) Chang’e 4 to the moon’s far side, which always faces away from Earth.
The Tianwen series will follow the Shenzhou and Chang’e series and move further into space. The first step is to launch a Mars probe this year, which will mark the start of China’s exploration of the Red Planet. The probe is expected to orbit (绕……轨道运行), land on and explore Mars in one mission. If it succeeds, it will be the first to complete all of these tasks in one mission. The Long March 5 rocket will send the probe to Mars. It will take seven months to reach the planet and land.
After this mission, China plans to visit Mars again in 2028, aiming to collect soil from the surface of the planet and bring it to Earth. Around 2030, China will explore Jupiter and several asteroids (小行星), according to CNSA.

Scientists in the US recently invented the whitest paint ever made. The paint can reflect up to 98 percent of sunlight and cool surfaces by 4. 5℃—even in direct sunlight.
The researchers hope that this new paint can help cool down the planet if it is used to paint buildings.
“Our paint can help fight against global warming by helping to cool Earth—that’s the cool point,” lead researcher Professor Ruan Xiulin from Purdue University told The Guardian. “Producing the whitest paint means the paint can reflect the largest amount of sunlight back to space.”
There are two things that make the paint so white. First, it has a large amount of barium sulphate(硫酸钡). Barium sulphate is used to make paper white. Also, the barium sulphate particles(微粒) in the paint are all different sizes, which helps to reflect more light.
But exactly how much paint would be needed to help stop climate change?
“We estimate(估计) we would only need to paint 1 percent of the Earth’s surface with this paint—perhaps an area where no people live that is covered in rock—sand that could help fight the climate change,” Professor Ruan said.
Thankfully, we won’t have to wait much longer to use it. The new whitest paint could be on the market in about one or two years.

The important thing is not how large the population of the world is now, but the rate of the growth. It is about 1.63 percent every year.
Every second, 4.2 babies are born in the world. Another baby! Another baby! Another baby! You can not speak quickly enough to keep up with the birth rate. The population is growing faster and faster. In one day, people have to find food for over 350,000 mouths. The rapid growth of population will make a big problem by the year 2025. There will be as many as 8.1 billion people on the earth! So this is one of the biggest problems that you are going to see in your life.

An invasive species (入侵物种) of ant, called “big-headed ant,” is changing the way lions hunt (捕猎) and eat in Kenya, according to a new study. The ants spread because of human activities like trade and travel. They arrived in Kenya from southern Africa about 15 years ago. Since then they have been killing the local acacia ant.
Acacia ants live in and take care of the whistling thorn tree sin Kenya. In a “symbiotic relationship”, acacia ants get food from the trees and use them for home. In return, they protect the trees from animals like elephants or giraffes, which might eat too much of the trees. Acacia ants do this through a tacking (攻击) these animals in group.
However, big-headed ants eat acacia ants and their eggs. As a result, the number of acacia ants is falling. What’s more, big-headed ants don’t protect whistling thorn trees either. So with fewer acacia ants to save them, the trees are in trouble.
Professor Palmer’s team found that in areas with big-headed ants, elephants destroyed (破坏) more trees. This means the place is more open and zebras can easily find lions following them. So lions kill much fewer zebras in these areas than in tree-filled places.
The good news is that the lion population remains unchanged because the lions turn to hunt buffalo for food instead of zebras. This probably means that the tiny ants have caused lions to change their habits too. They have to hunt the bigger, heavier buffalo. Professor Palmer said, “We often find it’s the little things that rule the world.”

The home of the elephant is in the deep forest. It is the largest of all land animals, and is found both in Asia and Africa. One of the main places in Asia where the elephant lives is the island of Ceylon. The huge forests on the island become the home of thousands of elephants. The trees grow thick and tall. They make many parts almost dark, while bright sunlight is above and around them.
Living habits
The elephant likes the deep part and the coolest places of the forest. There he will stand swinging his ears, to drive away the flies; or he will pull down a branch (树枝) from a tree to fan himself. He likes bathing, and to be near a lake or running water. There he takes in the water with his trunk, and spreads it all over his body.
Food
The elephant enjoys the fruits in the forest, and also the leaves of the trees. There is plenty of food for him in the forests, though he is not always happy with what he finds there.
Way of movement
When a group of elephants moves about in the forest, the oldest goes first. The young elephants and their mothers are in the middle, where they are the safest. Then all move along with a great noise, the branches of the trees bending and breaking before them. Though the elephant is usually harmless, no one dares to attack (袭击) a group of them moving through the forest.
How people treat them
In Asia the elephant is trained to work. At one time the African elephant also was trained. Soldiers in ancient times often went to fight on the backs of African elephants. But now the elephant that lives in Africa is illegally (非法地) hunted mainly for its valuable ivory. In order to protect them, governments around the world have developed laws to stop this.
1. The elephant likes the ________ part of the forest.A.bright and sunny | B.deep and cool | C.dry and deep | D.wet and sunny |
A.bathing | B.having fruits | C.eating leaves | D.harming people |
A.Working for people. | B.Fighting in the army. |
C.Performing for people. | D.Selling for money. |
