Everyone’s talking about “digital citizenship”, but what is it?
We use the word “digital” to talk about computer technology. Being a “citizen” means that you belong to a group of people. Digital citizens can use technology to communicate with others online and know how to use the Internet in a safe way. Are you a good digital citizen? Here are some ways to be safe online.
Stay safe
To stay safe, never give your personal information online, such as your address or the name of your school. Make sure that you create safe passwords and don’t tell anyone else.
Show respect
Just like in real life, it’s important to behave well online. For example, if you want to post a photo of someone, make sure you ask for their permission (许可) first. Remember that everybody can have their own opinion. It’s OK to disagree, but always be polite!
Be kind
Before you post your opinion online, stop and think. Is it positive (积极的)? How will your words make someone feel? Don’t say something online that you wouldn’t say in real life. Never send nasty messages. If you see that someone’s being bullied (欺负) online, tell a parent, teacher or another adult.
Be careful
Don’t trust everyone or everything online. Remember that people online are not always who they say they are. Never open emails from strangers, click on strange links or download apps without asking an adult. They may have viruses (病毒). If you’re not sure, ask your parents or teachers!
Spending time and learning online can be great if we’re good digital citizens. So, be safe, be responsible and have fun!

For example, some high school and university students in the United States often spend many hours as volunteers in hospitals, orphanages or homes for the aged. They read books to the people in these places, or they just visit them and play games with them or listen to their problems.
Other young volunteers go and work in the homes of people who are sick or old. They clean up or repair their houses, do the shopping or mow (修整) their lawns (草坪). For boys who don’t have fathers there is an organization called Big Brothers. University students and other people take these boys to baseball games and help them get to know things that boys usually learn from their fathers.
Each city has a lot of clubs where boys and girls can go to play games or take part in other activities. Some of these clubs show movies or have short trips to the mountains, the beaches or the museums. Most of these clubs use a lot of high school and university students as volunteers because they are young enough to remember the problems of younger boys and girls.
Volunteers believe that some of the happiest people in the world are those who help to bring happiness to others.
