If you have no special plans for your holidays, why not spend your time helping others? Don’t listen to people who say that the young people today often think only of themselves. It’s not true at all. More and more people in the USA volunteer to spend their school holidays working for others. And they don’t do it for money. Here are some of their stories.
Alice Hamilton, 17
I’m going to help the Forest Center build new hiking paths (小路) in the mountains. It’s going to be wonderful — I’ll spend the whole summer living in the tent and breathing the clean mountain air. I’m going to sleep under the stars. It’ll be a nice sport, and I’ll be able to do something good at the same time.
.Jason Moore, 18
This summer, I’m going to volunteer with Special House Program. They build good, low-cost houses and sell them to families that are not very rich. They’ll teach me what to do, so I’ll help people and also have a chance to learn how to build houses.
Trish Anderson, 16
I’m going to teach kids who have trouble reading. I’ll work for a program called Reading For Life. Every day, I’m going to help kids choose and read books that they like. I want to be a teacher and I love children and reading, so this is going to be a great experience for me.
1. The young people today often think only of themselves, don’t they?2. What does Alice Hamilton think of the coming voluntary work?
3. Who will learn to build houses this summer?
4. What’s wrong with the kids who Trish Anderson is going to teach?

At a special ceremony(仪式), a special award was offered
to a group of students from Changjian University on February 11,
2010. They were brave enough to help save two boys from
Changjiang Rive. All the students were there except three, who lost
their lives when they tried to save the boys.
On the afternoon of October 24, 2009, some students were
taking a trip to Changjiang River. Suddenly two boys fell into the river. Some of them quickly jumped into the water and saved one boy. However, things didn’t go so well when they tried to save the other one. More students joined in, and, hand in hand, they formed a human wall. Finally the other boy was saved.
However, the human wall broke down and many students were swept away by the rushing water. At that moment several members of a winter swimming team nearby came to help and succeeded in saving many of the students. But the three of them, who were only 19, were nowhere to be found.

Jordyn Perez was about to turn 8 years old when her mom suggested a new way to celebrate her birthday. “What would you think about donating your gifts to a children’s hospital?” her mom said. “Okay, that’s cool,” Jordyn said. “I already had everything I needed. And these kids that were going through things at the hospital—they needed it more than I did.”
Now Jordyn is in high school. She continues to bring joy to kids being treated for serious illnesses. In December, she made her eighth birthday-gift donation to Baptist Children’s Hospital. Jordyn’s gift drives kick off each year in November. She sends her friends invitations to her birthday party. The invitations list gift ideas for kids at the hospital. These include blocks and toy trains. Jordyn also shares the list with family and teachers.
“Seeing other people’s smile—that’s all that matters to me,” Jordyn says. Natalie Gutierrez works at Baptist Children’s Hospital. She has seen firsthand the effect of Jordyn’s gift-giving. “She puts smiles on the faces, of these little patients in our hospital and on our nurses,” Gutierrez says. “They are all amazed at her generosity (慷慨).”

On winter nights, the wind usually blows strongly. Most of us stay inside our warm homes. Few of us think about the homeless. These people have no choice but to sleep on the streets. Some of them are so poor that they have no money to buy food.
A young man in Birmingham, England, made a decision to do something about this. Every night, he puts on a Spider-Man suit (套装) and gives food to the homeless he meets. He makes sure that these people won’t go hungry. The man refuses to make his name public.
The local people call him “the Birmingham Spider-Man”. The young man hopes his action will show others that everybody deserves (应得) a helping hand.
The 25-year-old man started his night activities in 2015. Every night at 9, he buys some sandwiches. Then, he finds a quiet place and puts on his suit. After that, the “Spider-Man” starts handing his food out to people in need.
The man said, “I wear the Spider-Man suit in order to get attention.” Without the suit, few people took a second look at him when he was handing out food. When people see the “Spider Man”, however, they come over and ask what he is doing.
“The Birmingham Spider Man” has already got lots of attention. Many people have offered to give away money to him. But the young man never accepts the money. Instead, he encourages people to go out and help people in need on their own. He said, “If more people offer a helping hand, the cold winter nights won’t be so cold any longer.”

Earthquakes happen very often in Tokyo, but Tokyo is not an unlucky city. Many special parks have been built in Tokyo to keep people safe during earthquakes. These parks look nothing different from the other parks, but when earthquakes happen, they become life saving places.
Many useful things in those special parks can meet people’s basic needs. For example, it is usually hard for people to get water after earthquakes. In the special parks, people can get drinking water from the water pump (泵). If people need to use toilets, they can choose special toilets that can be used without water. Also, the helicopter (直升机) can land on squares or baseball fields and bring food or other things to people. What’s more, if people need to cook in the parks, some special benches (长凳) can become cooking things.
However, those useful things are not enough for people to face earthquakes. The most important part lies in training people. The parks, together with fire stations and the police, will train with local people at the usual time. This will let people think and move faster during real earthquakes and let them protect themselves better.
So, what can we do to protect ourselves from getting hurt in earthquakes? First, we need to check our furniture and make sure they won’t fall down easily. Second, when an earthquake happens, we need to stay under tables or desks and protect our head. Third, we can keep our door open and wear comfortable shoes during small earthquakes in order to get out safely.
1. Why are there many special parks in Tokyo?2. Can people get drinking water from the special toilet or the water pump?
3. According to the passage, what is the most important to help people face earthquakes?
4. When will the local be trained to protect themselves in earthquakes?

Dogs are the best pets of humans. They come in all sizes. Some dogs are as small as a football, and others are as tall as a desk. Dogs’ fur(毛) is different, too. It can be long and soft, or smooth and hard. People don’t mind the kind of fur, because all dogs are good to hug.
Dogs need to be taken care of. Short-haired dogs are the easiest to look after. But all dogs need a bath once in a while. Giving a dog a bath is a lot of fun. After you give a bath to your dog, it shakes the water off its body. Be careful, or you will get wet!
Dogs like to make their owners(主人) happy, so dogs are easy to train. They can follow simple orders.
Dogs are really amazing animals. Some dogs pull sleds(雪橇) across icy places. Some save people who fall into the river. Other dogs do tricks(表演绝技) in movies. A dog has even flown in a rocket(火箭) to space.

In the past, each student would buy a big beautiful notebook and ask their classmates to write in it. But things are a bit different now. Grade 9 students use USB flash disks (U盘) instead of notebooks. Some students are not good at Chinese. They can’t use sweet words to show how they love their friends. But with the USB flash disk, they can write, draw or even make cartoons for each other.
One of the students said, “I like the USB flash disk because it costs less than fifty yuan. And there is a lot of space for me to write in.” But some students still like notebooks better. They say words in computers are cold. It is bad for their eyes to use computers too much, “Although a notebook may have less space, I will still choose it. A notebook can keep my classmates’ handwriting. That is sweet.” said a boy.
Which way will you choose to say goodbye to your classmates?
1. Did students in the past write the warm words in the notebook when they graduated?2. What can students do with the USB flash disk?
3. According to the passage, why do some students prefer notebooks?
4. Which way would you choose to say goodbye to your classmates? Why?
