One day the teacher scolded (训斥) Rita for not concentrating when she was doing some math problems. The whole class laughed at her and Rita cried hard. The teacher had patiently explained how to do them, but Rita was just not able to understand.
Gina told her mother about Rita's bad day. "Why don't you try to help her?" asked her mother. " She likes you very much."
" Mommy, I don't have time to waste." said Gina.
" But Rita is your friend and if you don't help her, who will?" said her mother. But Gina didn't think so.
" Then Gina's mother decided to act tough(强硬地)." If you don't help her, I will not let you watch cartoons for a week."
Extremely unhappy, Gina taught Rita. Rita understood, for Gina knew how to explain things simply. Rita was excited and told everyone what a good friend Gina was.
One day, Gina made a mistake, and the principal (校长) asked Gina to pick up the waste paper in every classroom after school.
After school, Gina began to clean the classrooms and she felt very sad. Rita found out about it and went to help her do it.
From that day, Gina and Rita became the best of friends.

A smile on your face shows you are happy or friendly. Tears in your eyes tell others that you are sad. When you raise your hand in class, the teacher knows you want to say something or ask questions. You shake your head, and people know you are saying, "No". You nod and people know you are saying "Yes".
Other things can also carry messages. For example, a sign at the bus stop helps you to know which bus to take. A sign on the wall of your school helps you to find the library. Signs on doors tell you where to go in or out. Have you ever noticed that there are a lot of signs around you and that you receive messages from them all the time?
People can communicate in many other ways. An artist can use his drawings to tell about beautiful mountains, about the blue sea and many other things. Books are written to tell you about all the wonderful things in the world and also about people and their ideas. Books, magazines, TV and radios and films all help us to communicate with each other. They all help us to know what is going on in the world and what other people are thinking about.

Try to smile (微笑) more. When you smile, people think you’re friendly and easy to talk to. Remember that other people have feelings too and most people will stay away from an angry-looking face.
Learn to be a good talker. If you find it hard to start talks, say something nice about people around you. Think about how great you feel when someone says something nice to you. Doesn’t it make you want to keep talking to that person?
Get your attention (注意) elsewhere. Think more about ways to enjoy parties or games. Don’t waste time worrying about your look or whether people like you or not.
Take one small step at a time. Each time when you say “Hi” or smile at someone, say to yourself, “You did it.”
Keep trying and you are sure to do better.

Smile when you greet your customers. You want your customers to feel welcome, and that starts with your body language. Smile, and walk to them in a right way. Everything you do should show “I’m glad you’re here!”.
Remember what customers prefer(更喜欢). It is good to remember customers’ likes and dislikes. If you work at a clothes store, remembering a customer’s favorite color will make her feel like you care about her. This is a great way to let customers come again.
Show customers to the thing they want. Don’t just tell them where to look for what they want. They will thank you if you lead them to get the thing they want.
Give space after the greeting if necessary. Usually, greet an arriving customer as soon as you see her. However, if her face looks like “don’t talk to me, leave me alone”, you’d better give her space. But let her know she can find you if she needs help.

Slat was on a diving(潜水)trip in Greece three years ago when he was troubled by plastic. “There were more plastic bags than fishes,” he says. “That moment I realized it was a huge problem and that environmental problems are really the biggest problems we will face.”
That fall, Slat, then 17, decided to study plastic pollution as part of a high school project. Soon, Slat learned that no one had yet thought of useful ways to clean up all the rubbish. Most people wanted to “fish” up the plastic using ships with nets—which might need more than 1,000 years, cost too much, and leave sea life along with the rubbish.
Slat decided to avoid these problems: a solar-powered system(太阳能系统)using a moving plastic tube(管)which will go around the rubbish and collect it. Wind and waves will push the rubbish to the tube. A ship will pick up the rubbish and take it back to the land.
Slat organized a team of volunteers for the Ocean Cleanup, which has about 100 members.
Over the next three to four years, Slat will continue to test whether his project is good enough or not.

You want to have new friends. But how to make them? How do you start? How do you get along with people? Here are five ways to help you to do these.
Greet (问候) people
Greet people and hope that they have a good day—at any time of the day. It doesn’t hurt (伤害) any people. It also makes people think you’re friendly.

Help people
Simple actions, like helping other people carry something or opening a door can show your kindness.

Sara was sitting in the kitchen going over the party list with her mother. The exams were over and Sara wanted to invite her friends for a party and have fun.
“Sara, aren’t you going to invite Ada?” her mother asked. Ada had been her best friend since childhood.
“Mother, you know I am now a member of Purple Girls Club and we have some rules about people we can be friends with.” Sara answered in a low voice.
“Really? And what are the rules?” her mother asked in surprise.
“Well, only very pretty girls can be part of our group. And Ada is so… you know... dark.”
“I can’t believe it.” her mother said angrily.
As Sara left the kitchen, her father called her from the living room. Sara went to her father and got nervous when she saw the exam report in his hands.
“Sara, what has happened to your grades? You have failed in math.” her father said.
Sara had no answer. The truth was that the activities of Purple Girls Club left her with very little time for studies.
“Sara, it says that you can take part in supplementary exams. If your grades don’t improve then, I’ll cancel your trip to Spain in the coming holiday.”
Sara went to her room and called Gina, the leader of Purple Girls Club.
“Gina, can you help me to complete my notes before the exams?”
Gina just said, “Exams? Who cares about exams?”
One by one, she called all her friends in the club but no one seemed to care or wanted to help her. Then Sara thought of Ada. She knew Ada would help her. She also knew Ada had been hurt by her, but Ada said, “If you need any help, just let me know. We can study together till your exams.”
Next Monday, as the two friends entered the school together, Gina called out, “Sara, you know our club rules. You can’t be friends with those who do not belong to our club.”

Friends are very important in everyone’s life because friends are always there when we need them. A true friend reaches for your hand and touches your heart.
My friendship with Sue started 30 years ago with a snake. A few months after I moved into an apartment, my next-door neighbor (邻居), shouted to me, asking for help with a snake sleeping near her apartment.
I made the snake run away and made a new friend. Soon Sue invited me over for dinner or left home-made food at my door. When I went to my beach house, Sue helped look after my pet and water my plants. And when she wasn’t home, I did the same for her. When she traveled, she’d remember to bring me wonderful gifts, but her smile (微笑) is always the greatest gift of all.
In 1997, I had a lovely child and Sue looked after me and him. Years later, I returned the favour (回报). I helped out when her husband was in hospital, staying with her and talking about and sharing everything with her.
Unluckily, in 2019 the pandemic (疫情) happened. My husband lost his work and my son couldn’t be back home because of the virus (病毒). I was worried about them and I didn’t know how to fight the pandemic. But Sue appeared in time. She helped my family to prepare for the pandemic and shared food with me. Without her, I couldn’t go through difficult times. I was the luckiest one in the world.
A wall might separate (阻隔) our apartments and masks (口罩) can separate the viruses, but nothing is able to separate our hearts.

3. Why did the writer think she was the luckiest one in the world?
