Do you have a favourite place—a place with family and relatives (亲戚), good weather and fun things to do? I’m glad I have. New Jersey is my favourite place. I like it for many reasons (原因).
The first reason is my family and relatives. Half of my relatives live in New Jersey. When I visit them, my cousins and I play games and have fun together all the day. My uncles and aunts like taking me to the park. There we can ride roller coasters and play in the water. We all feel happy to stay together.
The second reason is the weather. It is not hot, and it’s always cool. When I think about my visits to New Jersey, I can just feel the little wind in my hair. It’s so great to stay there.
The third reason is catching crabs (捕蟹). If it’s the crab season, we often catch crabs. We keep the blue crabs and the snow crabs, and we let the others go. Once, my cousin catches a crab. It is so big that it can’t get out of the crab bag! Finally, we help it get out, but it hurts one of its legs. Poor crab!
For all these reasons, New Jersey is my favourite place.

I went to that old house on a day shortly after my father’s death. It was as though it were calling; even the trees seemed to be an invitation to come, to visit, to stay a while.
As I stood once again on that old floor, my eye was drawn to some papers on the floor. An envelope, yellowed with age, lay on top. A blue stamp on the envelope read “Passed by Naval Censor.” How could I have missed this envelope? My father had served aboard the USS Washington during World War II and had written home whenever he could. My grandmother saved all of his letters.
I removed one letter carefully from its envelope. It was dated September 1944. I studied the familiar (熟悉的) words. Dad wondered how the farming was and how his uncle’s new team of horses was working out. He supposed that his youngest brother was starting first grade. He asked his mother to greet everyone and said that he missed them all.
It wasn’t hard to read between the lines. Here was a homesick young man, a kid really, who had grown up on grass. Now he was on a different kind of sea, taking part in the war. At the bottom of the page, my father had passed on one last message. Tears burned my eyes as I read those words he had so carefully written: “All is well here. Please don’t worry. I am doing fine.”
As I left the old house that day, I took one last look back at it over my shoulder. I don’t care what anyone thinks, I decided. That old house gets to stay there until it rots (腐烂) into the earth.

“You needn’t look for it,” said Della. “It’s sold, I tell you - sold and gone, too. It’s Christmas Eve, boy. It’s time for gifts. Be good to me, for it went for you. Maybe the hairs of my head were numbered,” she went on with a sudden serious sweetness, “but nobody could ever count my love for you.”
Jim drew a package from his overcoat pocket and threw it upon the table.
“Don’t make any mistake, Dell...” he said, “...about me. I don’t think there’s anything that could make me like my girl any less, no matter what hair style you have. But if you’ll open that package you may understand how I felt at first.”
She opened the package with her white fingers quickly and lightly. And then an excited cry of joy; and then, alas! a quick change to uncontrollable tears.
For there lay the combs - the set of combs (发梳), side and back, that Della had dreamed of for long in a Broadway window. Beautiful combs with jeweled rims (边缘)-just the color to wear in her beautiful hair. They were expensive combs, she knew, and her heart had always wanted them. But there was no hope of having them. He listened to me quietly, and then he asked, “Are the things she says true or not? Jane, didn’t you ever wonder what you are really like? Well, you now have that girl’s opinion. Go and make a list of everything she said and mark the points that are true. Pay no attention to the other things she said.”I did as he told me. To my great surprise, I found that about half the things were true. I couldn’t change some of them, like being very thin, but more I could and suddenly I wanted to change. For the first time I got a pretty clear picture of myself.
I brought the list back to Daddy. He refused to take it. “That’s just for you,”he said. “You know better about yourself. But you have to learn to listen, not just close your ears angrily and feel hurt. Don’t close your ears. Listen to them all, but hear the truth.”

“How much money is a bowl of beef soup?” the grandma sat down, counted the money in her purse and ordered a bowl of beef soup. The grandma pushed the bowl to the little boy, who swallowed (吞咽) his saliva (口水), looking at his grandma and saying, “Grandma, did you really have lunch?” “Of course.” His grandma chewed (咀嚼) a piece of radish (萝卜泡菜) slowly. (picture: children lay flowers for the Queen)
The death of Queen Elizabeth II (英国女王伊丽莎白二世) has made many English people feel sad. Some are crying, others have been reminded (提醒) of friends and relatives (亲戚) who have died. Although death can be a frightening word, it’s a natural part of life-and it is important to talk about it.
WHAT IS GRIEF?
Grief is a natural emotional response (反应) to the death of a person—or a pet—that you love or feel close to. In some cultures, grief is quiet and private (私人的), while other people may cry out loud. There is no right or wrong way for grief. What seems strange to one person can be natural and common to another. Queen Elizabeth I once said, “Grief is the price we pay for love.”
WHAT DOES GRIEF FEEL LIKE?
Losing someone can leave a hole in your life and make you feel sad and bad. The charity Young Minds says everyone experiences grief differently and for different lengths of time. It’s normal to feel emotions like anger, fear, anxiety (焦虑) and sadness. Prince Harry’s mother Diana died when he was 12. In March 2020, he wrote to children who had a parent who died in the pandemic (疫情). He said, “You may feel alone, you may feel sad, you may feel angry and you may feel bad. This feeling will pass. And I will make a promise to you—you will feel better and stronger once you are ready to talk about how it makes you feel.”
HOW TO DEAL WITH LOSS
Poppy Mardall runs a company (公司) that organises funerals (葬礼).She says it’s important to talk to someone you trust (信任) about your feelings and not hide them away. Don’t be afraid of doing something that makes you smile, like watching a film or meeting up with friends. Even though a loved one has died, says Mardall, your relationship with them is still alive; your memory and feelings for them will stay with you through your whole life. So try writing them a letter, poem or song, or draw a picture of them. “Share your memories with other people,” says Mardall.

Unlike their classmates, they had to get up early at seven every Saturday to prepare for their lessons. Lily had to attend the art lesson and Lucy had to attend her ballet lesson. “How I wish I could do something different today,” said the twins with one voice. All at once, an idea came to Lily and Lucy at the same time. “Do you have the same idea as me?” they asked each other and laughed. It seemed like a wonderful plan to them. After giving each other a description of their own friends, Lily put on Lucy’s ballet dress while Lucy put Lily’s brushes and paints into her bag. Then they left for their classes.
When the art lesson started, Lucy couldn’t understand the art teacher. Unlike Lily, Lucy was poor at drawing. When the art lesson finally ended, Lucy didn’t dare to hand in her work.
Meanwhile, Lily was struggling in the ballet class as well. As she had no idea about the dance steps, she had to follow her classmates blindly. As a result, she kept knocking into them . I still remember when I was in Grade 8, my physics was very poor. I had a really hard time with it. Once in class, the teacher asked us to discuss it with each other, but I was very shy. I could not do it like what they told me. My physics teacher encouraged me to talk with someone else bravely, then I studied with some classmates together. When I did not understand any questions, they could give me some advice, then I could quickly find out the ways to deal with the problems. After that, l felt very relaxed and asked my classmates a lot of questions about physics. I did not feel stressed out at all. At last, I finished my homework by myself for the first time. How excited I was!
Because of studying in groups, I am not worried about physics any more. With my classmates’ help, I get more confidence. It also gives me more chances to improve myself in many ways. So let’s study more in groups.
