Does your school have charity sales? Our school had one a few days ago. Students brought many things for the sale. There were novels, magazines, toys, cartoon posters and beautiful candles. Most things were almost brand-new. Many students and teachers bought things at the sale. Wu Zhongyue, a Grade 8 student, found that novels for kids were much cheaper. Four copies written by Zheng Yuanjie cost her 10 yuan. Pan Liqi spent 20 yuan on posters and hoped the money would go to poor kids. At last the sale raised about 6,000 yuan.
The purpose of the sale is to help the children in Africa. Every day hundreds of them die because they have diseases or don’t have enough food to eat. First, there is no work for the children’s parents, so they have no money to buy food or medicine. Second, the governments in many African countries are too poor to care for the poor. The land and the weather are bad for farming. There are many organizations trying to help these poor people. The organization we are trying to help, the Feed Africa Fund, spends millions of dollars every year on food for poor people in Africa. This money comes from people like you—kind, generous people who do not want to see children die from hunger.

Dino is a photographer (摄影师). He comes from Italy and now lives in Norway. He travels around the world to take photos of common people on the street and show them how beautiful they are. He believes beauty is in everybody, everywhere and that his work shows the beauty to others.
Dino points his camera (照相机) at common people on the street. These people are often walking or doing something else. Dino just stops them and asks to take their photos. As he uses a camera to take photos, he has another person following him to film the process (过程).
Often, the stories behind the photos are also beautiful. Once, Dino met an old woman in Italy. He walked to her and asked to take some photos of her, but she refused because she said she was “too old”. When he told her he would delete all of the photos if she didn’t like them, she finally said yes. In the end, even the old woman herself was surprised to see how lovely she was!
Dino’s photos show us that things like age and jobs don’t mean a thing when it comes to beauty. True beauty comes from people’s inner world (内心世界), and Dino has a way to share that with the world.

A community cleanup brings volunteers together to clean, repair and improve public (公众的) places with rubbish or being broken. The cleanup project (项目) covers all kinds of public places-parks, playground s and even parking lots (停车场).
How to make the project welcome
A cleanup can be a one-time event. It doesn’t have to be held very often or last for a long time. If you like, you can keep on the activity by moving the cleanup from one place to another.
Sharing the work—letting people do different jobs that interest them and making each new cleanup a fresh chance for volunteers.
Make sure your project is realistic (可行的). It’s a good idea to start with a project that can be finished in one afternoon. Don’t start a large project at the beginning because it is difficult to finish.
No matter your cleanup project is a one-time event or a year-long one, don’t forget to celebrate the results. Take photos and videos, then put them on the Internet and write thank-you letters to those who helped. Making a meal in the end can make volunteers look forward to working together again.

As we were driving, he started to tell me his story. His hometown was “Nah Bok”. Because of the pandemic (疫情), he had to spend six days a week in another town for more work. On his only day off, to have time with his family, he took three different buses for a total of five hours there and back.
My father worked away when I was young. Sometimes he was away for weeks or months at a time. I remember at that time, we kids were all waiting for our turns to have just a couple of minutes on the phone to talk with him.
After two hours’ drive, I saw a sign saying Nah Bok. I asked, “Why don’t we stop and say hello?” He looked at me like I was crazy or joking. I repeated it seriously. He was hesitant (犹豫的). He asked if I was sure. I certainly was. It was OK for me to spare thirty minutes out of my day while this man had to spend more than two hours getting home each time.
Everyone of his family was excited to see him. All the children jumped out, screaming.
Slow down and listen to people’s stories. Take time when you can to give a gift to somebody else, even if it’s just your time.
