Huaping County, Yunnan Province, is one of the poorest areas in China. However, one school there has made a big difference. Over the past 13 years, it has sent more than 1,800 poor girls to universities.
The school was built by Zhang Guimei. Zhang Guimei came to Huaping only as a teacher 20 years ago. But she found that many of her girl students would drop out (辍学) before they finished their studies. Zhang wanted to know why. Later, she learned that these girls were from very poor families. They had to work at a young age. “I really want to study,” one girl cried and told Zhang.
Zhang wanted to change that situation. She collected money and built the Huaping High School for Girls in 2008. It is China’s first and only free high school for girls. “You are welcome here if you want to study,” said Zhang.
After all these years of hard work, Zhang is now in poor health. She has to take many different medicines every day. Unluckily, the truck broke down on their way. They didn’t know what to do because they had little knowledge of cars, and had no cellphone with them. It was 38℃ and there was little possibility that they could stop a car on the way. Parker began to be scared.
All of a sudden, a truck pulled up beside them. “Need help?” the man inside asked.
“Yes, my truck has broken down and my dad’s in trouble. He can’t stand the heat.”
Almost without hesitation, the man said he would be right back. In a few minutes, the man came back with a flatbed trailer (平台拖车). First, he put both Parker and his father in his truck, turning on the air-conditioning. Then he pulled the broken-down truck onto his trailer and drove the pair home.
Parker wanted to give him money for saving them, but the man refused to take it.
“I tried, but he wouldn’t take any money. I managed to put a couple of bills in the front seat as he drove away. Through the years, I had forgotten his name, but I know it was he who saved us,” Parker said.
That was 30 years ago. Recently, Parker happened to run into that man again, and they both looked at each other for a moment. But it was the man who spoke first. He asked Parker if he still remembered what happened.
