A new video series (系列) called Escape from the British Museum came out on August 30th, 2023. It has caused heated discussions in China’s social media recently.
The three-part series was created by two Chinese video vloggers. It features a woman who plays the role of an ancient jade teapot, a beautiful piece of China’s history. Her partner is a reporter who helps the jade teapot return to China. Together, they tell a tale of how the teapot, a symbol of Chinese artistry, escapes from the British Museum and finds its way back to China.
The videos were inspired (赋予灵感) by an Internet friend. He suggested making a video to record the hard way of Chinese cultural relics (文物) returning home from the UK to celebrate the Chinese Lunar New Year and to raise awareness about the importance of cultural heritage (遗产).
To bring this story to life, the two loggers travelled all the way to the UK and spent three whole months shooting the videos. The story they created is based on real events and facts, and aims to draw attention to the Chinese relics that are kept in museums far away from their home country.
The British Museum is known to have a total of 23,000 Chinese relics, while about 2,000 Chinese relics are on long-term display. The Chinese objects, from the New Stone Age to the present, include paintings, prints, jades and so on.
For long, the British has said that the cultural relics are safer and better protected at the British Museum, to refuse their return. But the British Museum was reported to have lost some cultural relics, which has caused a lot of concern around the world.
The videos are not only fun to watch but also serve as a reminder of the rich history and culture of China. The creators of the series hope that their work will inspire a love for Chinese heritage.
Though there is still a long way to go to return the cultural relics, China’s search for the lost cultural relics abroad will not stop.

Grain Buds (小满), the 8th solar term of a year, will begin on May 21 this year, and ends on June 4. It means that the seeds (种子) from the grain are becoming full. For example, someone might say that he tries to avoid eating sweets because they are unhealthy, but will eat chocolate “once in a blue moon”. Or someone who does not usually like to go to the beach might say “I visit the shore once in a blue moon.” While many people use this phrase, not everyone knows the meaning behind it.
The first thing to know is that the moon itself is never really blue. This is just an expression. In fact, the phrase “blue moon” has something to do with the shape of the moon, not the color.
As the moon travels around the earth, it appears to change shape. We associate certain names with certain shapes of the moon. For example, when we can see a small part of the moon, it is called a crescent moon. A crescent is a shape that looks like the tip of a fingernail. When we cannot see the moon at all, it is called a new moon. When we can see the whole moon, it is called a full moon. Usually, there is only one full moon every month. Sometimes, however, there will be two full moons in one month. When this happens, the second full moon is called a “blue moon”.
Over the next 20 years, there will only be 15 blue moons. As you can see, a blue moon is a very rare event. This fact has led people to use the expression “once in a blue moon” to describe other very rare events in their lives.

Boris, a foreign student at Communication University of China, often shares his experiences of Chinese culture on his vlog (视频博客).
In one video, for example, Boris shared how he had learned the Chinese word dongxi. He translated each part separately into “east west”. And he introduced one theory (说法) about how dongxi came to mean “things”. He told people that all marketplaces in ancient Chinese cities were set up along a single road that ran from east to west. So when you would say qu mai dongxi, you’d be saying, “I’m going to buy things.”
Some other videos show him reading Chinese poems and performing kung fu in Chinese traditional costume, which are quite welcome among his 40,000 followers. “Many of my followers are learning Chinese,” Boris said. “But sadly, they know little about Chinese culture and the country.”
Like many foreigners, Boris once believed that all Chinese could perform kung fu, flying onto roofs and walking over walls. He thought the country was not that developed. But after he got a scholarship (奖学金) to study in China in 2019, his view changed. “China has entered a new period, but many people’s impressions of China are still stuck in the 1970s,” Boris said. “That’s why I started to shoot vlogs to share Chinese culture in 2019.”
Until now, Boris has posted more than 40 Chinese culture vlogs online. But making these vlogs is not easy. Take reading the poem Second Farewell to Cambridge by Xu Zhimo as an example. “I can understand and read every word in the poem,” Boris said. “But to touch readers, I need to use proper feelings while reading.” So he needed to look for a lot of background information and make his feelings suit each part of the poem.
Though shooting these vlogs takes lots of time, the young man feels proud that his vlogs have inspired many people. Boris said that he wanted to continue bridging the differences between the two cultures. “This goal may not be achieved easily, but I will spare no effort to do my part.”
1. What does Boris mainly want to do through the vlogs?A.Sell Chinese products. | B.Share his experiences in China. |

D.Because it showed Boris’s effort at vlog-making. |
A.Say yes to Boris’s actions. | B.Call for more help. |
C.Build bridges by making vlogs. | D.Achieve a common goal. |

You can even add music and special effects (特效) to your videos. The videos are 15 seconds to a few minutes long. They show people doing activities like cooking, exercising, singing and so on.
Teenagers especially enjoy these videos. More than 50 percent of students in Grade 7 and Grade 8 said they enjoyed watching these short videos. About 47 percent have posted their own videos, according to a recent report.
The videos let teenagers see funny and exciting things they wouldn’t usually see. Many teens like to share the fun things they do with others as well. For example, a 12 year-old user named Xiao Qianyu has posted videos showing her learning jazz dance. This has won her many fans.
However, the videos can also cause trouble. Some students spend too much time watching them and not enough time studying. Some videos have vulgar content (内容) that is not good for teenagers.
To deal with this problem, Douyin added a new function (功能) in April, 2018. It locks the app if someone uses the app for over two hours a day. In the same month, the government asked companies to control these apps and get rid of bad videos.

When you get a pet, the first thing you might do is to give it name. The name should be one you’ll remember. It might also describe the pet. For example, if you get a brown puppy, you might call her Honey.
When a new product is invented, people need to give it a name, too.
Lots of electronic products are invented every year, so new computer words are invented all the time.
The World Wide Web (the Web) is a huge collection of documents that you can access (存取) through the Internet.
Two words were invented to describe Internet journals: blog and vlog. Blog is a form of web log.
Another new computer word is e-mail, which is a shortened form of electronic mail. You get your e-mail in a mailbox.
The next time you see a new invention, look carefully at its name. Do you see any words or words parts you know? By looking for familiar words, you can often guess what an invention does.
A.The Internet is an example. |
B.Vlog is a shortened form of video log. |
C.The name helps others remember it – and buy it. |
D.You use a Web browser to find texts and images. |
E.You can write an e-mail to the magazine. |
F.While mailbox isn’t a new word, it’s a new use of an older word. |
G.Dingding is the name of my cat. |
