【推荐1】Volunteers are probably some of the most overlooked(被忽视的) people. But no activities can carry on smoothly without hardworking volunteers. Last month, I volunteered at the Color Run in Melbourne, Australia. Although I didn’t have so much fun as the runners, I still learned a valuable lesson.

My job was to give a high-five(击掌) to every runner at the finish line. At the beginning, I saw it as a simple task. When the first runner passed, I reached out my hands and shouted “Good job!” excitedly. However, as more and more people crossed the finish line and clapped their hands with mine, my arms got sore. To make things worse, it became hotter. My clothes were wet because of the sweat(汗水), and I felt really tired. But soon I saw a group of children running towards me. They were about 6 years old. Although they hardly catch their breath, they still kept going with big smiles on their faces. They put up their hands and said loudly, “High-five!”

At that moment, I was quite touched. They were so young, and they refused to give up. Suddenly, I felt myself be full of strength(力量). I clapped their hands, “Well done, little guys!”

That is the meaning of being a volunteer. It is never an easy job. However, we meet different people and see the spirit that touches us. Although such spirit is not often found in daily life, it can help us learn a lot when we see it by accident.

Genesis Butler has been vegan （素食主义者）since she was 6. Now 15, her goal is to protect animals and the environment, and she has been calling on other kids to join this effort.

“When I first became a vegan, I knew animals were being harmed to produce our food. Then I found out that eating too many animals was also harming our planet. I wanted more people to know that when they’re eating animal products. They’re making a choice that affects（影响）how the future will be for everyone.” she said to Time for Kids.

To spread her ideas, Genesis presented for the TEDx program at age 10, becoming one of the youngest TEDx speakers ever.

She also supports causes like providing plant-based meals to hospitals, putting a stop to animal testing, and banning（禁止）the dissection（解剖）of animals in classrooms.

In 2020, Genesis started her own nonprofit organization（非营利性组织）, Genesis for Animals, which raises money to support animal sanctuaries（收容所）around the world. She also led Youth Climate Save which asks people to reduce consuming animal products. “It’s important that kids speak up, because it shows they’re really worried about their future.” said Genesis.

“A lot of young people are thinking, ‘What can I do about climate change?’ I started Youth Climate Save because I knew there were kids who needed support to become activists and get the word out there.”

Marvel（漫威公司）recognizes her compassion （同情心）and service. She is now a member of Marvel’s Hero Project. Shown on Disney, her story shows how a young hero can work to make a difference in the world.

【推荐3】A man in Germany may not have been in danger when he called the police on a baby squirrel running after him, but it all worked out for the best for the funny suspect.

Emergency services in the city of Karlsruhe got a call on Thursday from a man afraid that the tiny animal wouldn't stop following him around. The Guardian reported. Police arrived at the scene, where the squirrel finally stopped running after him by lying down and going to sleep.

It turned out that the squirrel actually needed help, the police said. ""It often happens that squirrels which have lost their mothers look for a replacement (代营) and then focus (集中) their efforts on one person, "the police spokeswoman Christina Krenz told The Guardian.

The squirrel, now named Karl-Friedrich, is in the care of an animal center. Karlsruhe police posted a statement on Facebook about the animal, including several lovely photos.

The baby squirrel chase is the second squirrel event to make international headlines this summer. Last month, a London woman called police after she heard loud noises in her home and suspected a burglar. The intruder turned out to be a squirrel, according to the police who came for help.

Although the government in the German case said the squirrel did need help, wildlife experts warn that before intervening (介入) in the case where you suspect a squirrel is orphaned (孤儿的),you should do your best to make sure the animal truly requires help. The Wildlife Centre of Virginia, which gets hundreds of calls every year about supposedly orphaned squirrels, published this handy guide to help decide whether such an animal really needs help and what to do if so. When in doubt, contact a local wildlife rescuer or animal center.
