When ChatGPT came out, Olivia Lipkin, a copywriter in San Francisco, found herself with less and less work to do. Last April, she was fired with no explanation. She realized the reason when hearing managers talking about how using ChatGPT was at a lower cost than having a human writer. Eric Fein had worked in a writing company for ten years. He became jobless last March because of ChatGPT. He said to his boss that ChatGPT couldn’t write with his level of creativity. His boss said he understood, but he would have to pay more to Fein than using ChatGPT.
AI systems like ChatGPT could replace (替代)hundreds of millions of jobs in the future. And for those who write social media posts and ads, the effect is already here. However, experts say that even the best AI systems can’t match the writing skills of a human. It doesn’t have a personal voice or style. Besides, it often gives the wrong answers.
Indeed, companies that have replaced human workers with ChatGPT have run into trouble. CNET, a technology news site, once used Al systems to write articles. The results, however, were full of mistakes. And the U.S. National Eating Disorders Company once replaced its helpline workers with robots. But it had to stop using the technology after the robots gave people harmful advice.
After being replaced by ChatGPT, Fein and Lipkin didn’t give up. Fein has decided to be an air-conditioning technician(技师), a job that AI can’t do. And Lipkin now works as a dog walker. She says, “People are looking for the cheapest solution, and that’s not a person-it’s a robot.”

ChatGPT is back in the headlines! OpenAI, the company behind the popular chatbot, has now introduced a powerful new language model: GPT-4.
On March 14, GPT-4 showed the world how smarter it is than the previous GPT-3.5. One of its best new features is that it can understand pictures. For example, if you show a picture of a phone using the wrong charger (充电器), GPT-4 can tell why the picture looks strange or funny.
But GPT-4’s developments don’t stop there. The new language model can code (用代码编写) classic games in a matter of minutes, and produce the code and layout for a website based on a hand-made drawing. It can also change the tone and style based on what you ask it to do. GPT-4 is much better than the older GPT at passing tests, which may worry teachers. According to CNN, GPT-4 did really well on a law school test, with a score in the top 10 percent of test takers. But GPT-3.5 only got a score in the bottom 10 percent.
GPT-4 will also see greater use as a tool to power other apps and services. For example, the language learning app Duolingo plans to use GPT-4 in their upcoming Duolingo Max function. Users can learn language by talking with AI. Another app, Be My Eyes, will have a digital assistant to help blind people better understand the world around them. The government of Iceland also plans to use GPT-4 to protect the Icelandic language.
There are still problems with the new language model, however. GPT-4 still struggles to get completely correct answers, especially with newer information after September 2021. GPT-4 also sometimes “hallucinates (产生幻觉)”, meaning that it will insist that wrong information is true.

What if I told you that you have a superpower? It’s right inside you. That superpower is called mindfulness. It means being in the present moment and it is great for your mental health.
Now a new app called Spoke can help to make mindfulness possible to young people, especially men.
Although there are many mindfulness apps out there, they are mainly used by women over 25, said Spoke CEO Ariana Alexander-Sefre.
How is Spoke trying to attract teenagers and young adults? They are young but with lots of pressure from study or work. The secret is music, said Alexander-Sefre in an interview with TechCrunch, an American online newspaper. “Young people are not interested in listening to people like yoga teachers or expert monks.” They’re interested in cultural leaders, like musicians. They can lead you out of bad mood scientifically.
So Spoke invited musicians to team up with psychologists and neuroscientists. They created a series of short, personalized musical episodes. They want young listeners to practice mindfulness, getting into a mental state that can help reduce anxious feeling and depression.
Mental state can be achieved through music, reported news website Quartz. Most of the time, humans are either worrying about the past or the future, rather than living in the present. This happens when a system of the brain called the “default mode network” is active. It’s natural because humans are born to plan for the future. But when we are listening to music, we are focused on the sound. It helps us keep calm and drive away the feelings like to be anxious and unconfident.
Still in its early days, Spoke hopes to deal with “a critical and completely underserved market”, said Check Warner, a founding partner of Spoke.

【推荐3】China now has more than 30,000 kilometers of high speed track (轨道), and this is expected to increase to 38,000 kilometers by 2025, fully two thirds of the world’s high speed rail (by length) is in China. Here, we track the exciting technological developments in high speed rail and consider their cultural influence.
While the main advantage of the high speed rail lines is convenience for people to get from one city to another as quickly as possible, some of these high speed lines have become popular tourist attractions (places that many tourists visit). A good example of this is the Hefei-Fuzhou high speed line. Technically speaking, this was one of the most challenging high speed rail routes ever built nearly 90% of the track was laid either on bridges or in tunnels (隧道). However, the amazing views are worth it, as the train goes through some of China’s most beautiful mountainous areas, including the Huangshan and the Wuyi Mountains Ranges.
As China has gained skills and knowledge in high speed rail, it is trying to export (出口) its technology to other countries. Its first project on the international market was the line connecting Istanbul with Turkey’s capital, Ankara, 530 kilometers away. This was followed by projects among other countries. Perhaps its most challenging project is a Trans Asian network (横贯亚洲铁路网) connecting China with Europe. Although it is difficult, China will make every effort to take on this plan. It is hoped to be completed by 2030 as a part of China’s Belt and Road Initiative (一带一路的倡议).
Thanks to high speed rail, the travel time between main cities in China has already been reduced to only a few hours. So this convenience should improve the development within (在……内) and out of China. No doubt, it will also bring the people of the country closer together, and in time bring about deep social changes.
1. How many kilometers of high speed track does China have now?A.Over 38,000. | B.Over 30,000. | C.Over 45,000. | D.Over 57,000. |
A.To prove how fast the high speed lines can be. |
B.To stress how convenient the high speed lines are. |
C.To explain high speed lines can be popular tourist attractions. |
D.To show the technical development of the high speed lines. |
A.Inventing faster trains. | B.Connecting China with Europe. |
C.Designing and building its own trains. | D.Connecting the whole country in 2030. |
A.It should improve the development within and out of China. |
B.It takes only a few hours to travel between main cities in China by high-speed train. |
C.It will bring the people of the country closer together, and bring about deep social changes. |
D.All the above. |
A.Racing to the Future. | B.Great Changes within and out of China. |

Focus on mental health
At some point in life, many people suffer a mental disturbance. While most people get over it, for others it doesn’t go away easily.
Oct 10 was World Mental Health Day. This year, the theme was “Young People and Mental Health in a Changing World”.
The World Health Organization says that about 20 percent of children and teenagers worldwide suffer from mental illness. It’s thought that the number of children and teenagers with mental illness around the world will increase by half by 2020. It will become one of the main causes of diseases, disabilities and even death.
In China, the picture isn’t bright, either. About 30 million Chinese children and teenagers under the age of 17, or 10 percent of children and teenagers in China, have a mental health challenge, reported China Daily.
The reason for mental problems among young people may be the increasing pressure in life.
The world is changing fast. Study and relationships have always caused stress, but today the stress is much higher than before, the WHO said.
The Young Foundation, a UK-based non-profit think tank, says that young people today have huge stresses at school. For instance, they experience bullying and body image issues. In a 2017 report, the foundation noted that the internet was a special source of stress. Online, young people often see “messages about perfection” and this causes the young “great uncertainty about their adult futures”, says the foundation.
Also, according to China Daily, Chinese people don’t seek help with their mental problems. They fear that others will think less of them if they admit that they are in trouble. Elaine Peng, a US mental health educator, makes a similar point. She thinks that many Chinese people are ashamed of their mental problems. Peng told Xinhua that mental illness “is taboo in many Chinese families”.
In the UK, over three-quarters of young people believe their mental health problems have a social stigma. YouGov, a UK-based data company, reported in 2017 that a quarter of young UK people wouldn’t ask for help if they developed a mental problem.
Young people who don’t seek help for their condition may be creating problems for themselves in the future. Jagannath Lamichhane, a mental health expert in Nepal, warned that, “If we hide our mental health, it may remain a problem forever.”
“My message for young people is, if you feel something is wrong within you—seek help,” he told NPR.

Even when a bilingual person is using just one language, both language systems in his or her brain (大脑) are active. This way, the brain has to deal with problems, which gives it a kind of exercise that makes it stronger.
A recent article in The New York Times talked about a study in 2022 by American psychologists (心理学家) Ellen Bialystok and Michelle Martin-Rhee. They asked some children to sort out (分类) some blue circles and red squares (正方形) on a computer screen into two “bins” shown on the computer. One group was bilingual and the other group spoke only one language.
First, they needed to sort the shapes by color, putting blue circles into the bin marked with the blue square and red squares into the bin marked with the red circle. Both groups did well with this task.
Next they needed to sort them by shape. This was more difficult, because they needed to put the shapes into a bin marked with a different color. The bilinguals did this task more quickly.
A number of such studies show that bilingual experience improves some of the brain’s abilities. It helps people stay focused (集中的).
The bilingual experience influences people from the time they’re born until they’re old. It also works on those who learn a second language later in life.
According to the BBC, a study in Psychology and Aging says being bilingual also helps prevent dementia (痴呆) in old age.

【推荐3】Think back to the last time you got a compliment (赞美) from someone else. Compliments from friends, colleagues, and loved ones can be really nice to hear. And—for that matter—it can feel good to compliment someone else as well. Yet, most people don’t do that as often as they should.
In one study, pairs of people walking together in a public park were stopped. Most of the pairs knew each other for almost 10 years. One of them was asked to write out three compliments for the other person. And the compliment writer predicted how nice the other person would feel receiving them. Then, the receiver read the compliments and rated (评价) how good and how embarrassed they felt receiving them, and how warm and well-phrased the compliments were.
From the study, researchers found that the participants (参与者) in the study underestimated (低估) how good and warm the compliments would make the receivers feel, also underestimated how well-phrased they were. And another finding is that the participants overestimated how embarrassed the receivers would feel. Besides, they found that the participants who focused on the warmth of the compliment were much willing others.
Putting these findings together, people miss a lot of chances to make people feel good, because they don’t give the compliments they think of. A big reason why they don’t give there is because they underestimate how good these compliments will make the other person feel. And a big reason why they underestimate the impact of compliments is because they form most on how well-phrased they are than on how good they will make other people feel.
So, if you have a chance to compliment someone else in your life, you should probably do it.
