It’s been more than 60 years since Jane Goodall started her pioneering work. In 1960, at just 26 years, old, the British woman was chosen to go to East Africa and study the little-known world of chimpanzees (黑猩猩). Since then, Dr. Goodall has achieved many awards and honorary degrees as a world-famous conservationist (自然环境保护主义者). Now, the90-year-old has received an unusual honor—she is becoming a Barbie doll.
Mattel, the company that makes Barbie dolls, has created this new doll. It came out just before World Chimpanzee Day in time for the 62nd anniversary (周年纪念日) of Dr. Goodall’s first visit into Tanzania’s Gombe National Park where she began her groundbreaking research on wild chimpanzees.
Dressed in a khaki shirt and shorts and holding a notebook with a pair of binoculars (双筒望远镜) around her neck, the doll is styled to match Dr. Goodall’s look. It also comes with a miniature replica (仿制品) of David Greybeard, the first chimpanzee she worked with.
But what really makes the Jane Goodall Barbie special is that it is the brand’s first signature doll to be made of recycled ocean plastic. And the toy is boxed in recyclable packaging as well.
“The main message is that every day you live, you make an impact on the planet and you get to choose what kind of impact you make.” says Dr. Goodall about the Barbie doll, “Hopefully, the doll will help to create more interest in the natural world. It doesn’t really matter if people have a career (职业) in conservation, as long as they pay attention to conservation in their daily lives.”

They cover a land area of more than 230,000 square kilometers and protect nearly 30 percent of the country’s key wildlife species (物种).

The Amazon rainforest in South America, at seven million km², is the largest rainforest in the world. The forest is important for people all over the world because it produces a lot of oxygen, and also helps to cool the weather. But large areas of the rainforest are being cut down for wood—55% of the forest could be gone by 2030! The World Wildlife Federation(WWF) is helping to stop some areas of the rainforest from being cut down.
At 68,000 km², the Aral Sea was one of the largest lakes in the world before the 1960s. Then rivers were diverted(修改河道) and it has been getting smaller ever since. By 2007, it was only 10% of its original size and had divided into three separate lakes. Dust storms happen again and again and the villages sit on the edge of a huge desert(沙漠) with large ships stranded(搁浅) in its sand. A dam(水坝) has been built to try to bring back higher water levels in the North with some success.
In China, about 3,600 km² of grassland near the Gobi turns into desert every year. There are often storms that blow dust all the way to Beijing. The storms are getting worse each year and have a deep influence on farmers.
The goal of the Green Wall Project, started in 1978, is to increase forests in northern China from 5% to 15% in order to stop the desert from growing. The project faces many challenges. However, people must never give up on it.
Saving the disappearing nature needs everyone’s effort. Although each one of us may only do a little, together we can make a big difference. What can you do to protect the environment?

The Philippines has begun building a high-tech environmentally-friendly “smart city”. There will be drones(无人驾驶飞机)and self-driving cars in the city.
The large city, which lies in the north of Manila, is called New Clark City. With plans to cover 9, 450 hectares, it will be bigger than Manhattan and as many as 1.2 million people can live in it. As well as being able to withstand typhoons, flooding and earthquakes, the city won’t have pollution.
Vivencio Dizon, president of government owned and controlled Bases Conversion and Development Authority, says one important thing is to make little traffic pollution. “When we build this city, we are building for people, but not for cars. It’s a big difference.” Dizon tells CNN.
He says the city will use greener energy sources, such as solar power, natural gas and waste-to-energy facilities. The buildings will use little energy. They will use lahar, a special locally sourced building material. Dizon says lahar will be the “main fabric(主要结构)” of the buildings in the city.
Matthijs Bouw, a Dutch architect, says the production of concrete(混凝土制造)can take a lot of energy and water and it can make a lot of pollution as well.
