“On a spring night, we offer book lovers a desk and a light. You can stay here as long as you want to.” This is the slogan (宣传语) of Sanlian Taofen Bookstore in Beijing.
Earlier this month, Sanlian Taofen Bookstore became the first 24-hour bookstore in the city. It hopes to encourage more people to read books. Bookstores are the brain of a city. Other bookstores have colourful activities. Eslite Bookstore (诚品书店) in Taiwan has activities like talks with famous writers as well as holding gallery shows (画展). Preview — if it’s long and hard. Previewing is very useful for getting a general idea of heavy reading like long magazine articles and science reports.
Here is how to preview.
●Read the first two paragraphs and the last two paragraphs carefully.
●Then read only the first sentence of the other paragraphs.
Previewing doesn’t give you all the details. It tells you not to spend time on things you don’t really want or need to read.
Skim — if it’s short and simple. Skimming is a good way to get a general idea of light reading, like popular magazines or the sports of your daily paper.
Here’s how to skim.
●Get your eyes to move fast. Sweep them across each line.
●Pick up only a few key words in each line.
Everybody skims differently. You and I may not pick up the same words when we skim the same piece, but perhaps we’ll get the same idea of what it’s all about.

An excellent sportsman practises until he can play quickly, correctly and without thinking. Educators call it “automaticity”.
A child learns to read by sounding out the letters and finding the meaning of the words. With practice, he sturnbles less and less, reading by the phrase. With automaticity, he doesn’t have to think about the meaning of words. So he can give all his attention to the meaning of the text.
It can begin as early as first grade. In a recent study of children in Illinois schools, Alan Rossman of Northwestern University found that automatic readers in the first grade not only read almost three times as fast as the others, but also got better results in exams.
According to Rossman, the key to automaticity is the amount of time a child spends reading, not his IQ. Any child who spends at least 3.5 to 4 hours a week reading books, magazines or newspapers will probably reach automaticity. It can happen if a child turns off TV just one night for reading at home.
You can test yourself by reading something new which is suitable for your level. If you read aloud with expression, with a sense of the meaning of the sentences, you probably are an automatic reader. If you read brokenly, one word at a time, without expression or meaning, you need more practice.

②You can play games and make money (赚钱) at the same time. One of the good things is that you can always play the newest (最新的) games and you don’t need to spend (花) money. You can know about the others’ newest thinking, and you will find a job (工作) easily.
③Does that sound good to you? Well, one game tester, Steve Conroy, doesn’t think so.

The report says that traffic accidents, falling into water, fires, falls, and poisoning(中毒)are the five major causes of unintentional injuries. About 830000 children under 18 die and millions of children are injured every year.
The World Health Organization finds that roads are the most dangerous places for children, especially in developing countries. Because children in these countries haven’t learned about the dangers of road traffic, they are often not ready for the new roads that might be built through their villages.
In Asia, deaths are most often caused by bikes. It is usual to see a whole family on one bike in counties such as Vietnam. When they are knocked over, they will be badly injured and some may even die.
In the United States and other Western countries, injuries from road traffic accidents have been cut down through the use of safety seats for children and other safety measures. However, traffic accidents are still a major cause of deadly(致命的) injuries.

Do some preparation work
It always helps when discussion leaders do a bit of research before the meeting. First, it’s necessary that you read the book! Pay attention to things you can bring up during the discussion. Using an index card (索引卡) as a bookmark makes it easy to write down notes and questions while you read.
After you have finished, do a little research. Find and read a couple of reviews and interviews with the author. Write down discussion questions or see if you can find ready-made questions online. If the book is about a real person, event, or place, you might want to check the web for some overview material you can bring to the discussion.
Tips for leading the discussion
Ask open-ended questions. These are questions that usually begin with “why” or “how”. For example, instead of asking, “Did you like the book’s ending?” ask, “What did you think of the book’s ending?”
Don’t be afraid to encourage group members to elaborate on (详尽阐述) their comments. If someone says they hated the book or loved a particular character, ask why.
Listen carefully. Of course, this goes for both leaders and participants, but if you’re a leader it’s especially important so that you can ask proper follow-up questions. Instead of jumping to the next question on your list, ask a question that links to the previous answer or helps build a good conversation.
Keep the discussion moving. If the talk starts to go off on a tangent (突然离题), focus it back to the book. If one person monopolize (垄断) the conversation, it’s OK to break in, acknowledge their point and ask what other group members think.
Prepare questions. Aim to have about 15 questions ready, but be flexible. If the group is engaged and talking about the book, you’ve done your job. You don’t have to get to every question.
1. What does a discussion leader do before the meeting?A.Interview the author. | B.Break in the discussion. |
C.Take notes while reading. | D.Write some book reviews. |
A.2. | B.3. | C.4. | D.5. |
A.Is this book interesting? | B.How often do you read per week? |
