As more people move away from petrol (汽油) cars, need for electric vehicles (EV) is rising. It’s not just the cars on our roads. Buses and trucks are changing into battery power, too.
That’s great news for the environment. But building enough charging (充电) stations for all these new EVs is a huge problem for many countries.
Detroit, in the United States, will soon be trying out an idea that could help. In the center of the city, there will soon be a main road that can wirelessly (无线) charge electric vehicles while they are running. No parking. No plugging in (插上插头). While the vehicles are on the road, they can get charged up.
Oren Ezer set up Electreon with his partner, which is the company behind the idea. He said, “The possibility of charging roads and cities is almost endless. We are reshaping the future of transportation.” It’s not just in Detroit. The company is already working on projects in some European countries, too.
Some mobile phones can charge wirelessly. You just place them on charging pad and the battery refills without needing to plug them in. Electreon’s road technology charger is similar to this idea. Coils (线圈) are fixed under the surface of the road. Electric vehicles are fitted with special receivers. When the vehicles drive over the coils, their batteries get power.
As well as helping encourage more people to use EVs, it’s hoped that the technology could allow for smaller batteries. The most expensive part of an EV is its battery. Trucks, for example, require big batteries so that enough charge can be stored to take a vehicle hundreds of kilometers before the next recharge. But if a vehicle could charge on the move, then a smaller battery might be all that’s needed.
Maybe, before too long, we will all be riding around in self-charging, self-driving cars.

The taxi is very important in the UK. When thinking of London, many images come to mind: Big Ben, the London Eye, red telephone boxes... and black London taxis.
But what is so special about a taxi? First, the shape and style of taxis are very different from the ones we see on the road. It looks like a half-car and half-van (半厢式货车). It has plenty of room in its back, and that is easy for disabled people (残疾人) to use. Besides, the black color makes it special on the road.
Besides the black taxis, drivers are also special in London. They have to pass a complex taxi driving test. First, they must remember 320 travel routes (路线) and more than 2,500 streets in London correctly. Then, they have to know the hotels, pubs, restaurants, scenic spots (景点) and Barber shops clearly. Because there are many tourists in London, they should take them to destination (目的地) quickly.
The taxi driver not only drives customers to destination, but also has a conversation with them. The London taxi driver is usually friendly and talkative. Most of time when I get in a taxi, I often ask how the driver is. Then we usually talk about sports or news events.

He also invented the phonograph (留声机), the motion picture camera (电影摄影机), and over 2,000 other things. About every two weeks he created something new.
Thomas Edison was born in Milan, Ohio, on February 11, 1847. His family moved to Port Huron, Michigan, when he was seven years old. There he attended school for a few months and was instead taught by his mother at home. In fact, he was mostly self-educated: He started experimenting (做实验) at a young age with electrical things at home.
When he was 12 years old, he got his first job. He became a newsboy on a train. In his spare time, he still continued his experiments. Unfortunately, his first work experience did not end well. He lost the job when he accidentally set fire to the floor.
Thomas Edison then worked for five years as a telegraph operator (电报员), but he continued to spend much of his time on the experiments. He got his first patent (专利) in 1869 for a vote recorder (投票记录器) run by electricity.

Flying cars
Space is running out quickly in some crowded cities. When there’s no space left on the roads, it is possible that we will drive cars in the sky. There are already many interesting flying car designs (设计) that show this future is a possibility. If it’s not flying cars, we might have other personal ways of travel. Jetpacks, for example, have been loved by designers and people looking for fun for years.
Wearable screens
In the future, you might not need to hold or look at traditional screens. There could be special devices (设备) that make screens appear on your skin, clothes or other things. These screens could work like touchable phone screens. They might even become a part of what you wear or be put inside your body. So you don’t have to carry a phone all the time, but you will have a screen with you wherever you go.
Smart mirrors
Now, picture a future where smart mirrors could tell you about your health problems. The only thing you need to do is take a quick look at the mirror. The information it gives could help you care about your health. Also, it could tell you how you’re feeling at the moment. Sounds great, right?

Thirty years ago, China started to build its own navigation satellite (卫星导航) system, Beidou. It took its name from the Big Dipper stars, which are the guiding light for people around the world.
In 1994, China began making the Beidou Navigation Satellite System (BDS), so it wouldn’t have to use navigation systems from other countries. It’s a lot safer this way.
In 2020, after over 20 years of hard work, Beidou completed its global (全球的) network. This achievement placed China among the group of countries and areas with their own global navigation network. The US, Russia and the European Union are the other three.
Beidou does not just show where you are. It’s also the first to let you send texts where there’s no phone signal (信号) or Internet. For example, you can use it to send messages to others in a deep mountain. The Beidou system has played an important role in disaster prevention. The BDS even helps farmers in China by providing exact information for planting and making farming wiser.

Humans are able to hear well, being able to hear high and low sounds through ears, which are actually broken down into three different parts.
The outer ear is the part of the ear that people can see. The size and shape of people’s ears is random(随机的) and it doesn’t affect their hearing. People with big ears don’t hear better than people with small ears! Some people choose to put earrings at the earlobe, the bottom of their ear, but this doesn’t affect hearing. Even though this is the main bit of the ear you can see, all it does is to collect sound and send it down into the middle ear—a bit like a satellite dish collecting a signal.
The outer ear ends where the eardrum(耳膜) starts. The area after the eardrum is called the middle ear. The sound that enters the outer ear makes the eardrum shake and the middle ear is the place where the sound gets louder.
The sound travels through the inner ear into something called the cochlea(耳蜗). This part is filled with liquid(液体) and covered in tiny hairs. As sound waves travel from the outer to the inner ear, they create waves in the liquid of the inner ear, which in turn moves the tiny hairs in the ear that send sound or movement signals to the brain.

Bacteria (细菌) like to grow on shoes. Some of them can be dangerous, according to scientists from the University of Houston in the US. One of the most common kinds of bacteria on your shoes is Escherichia coli (大肠杆菌).
Researchers found this bacteria on 96 percent of the shoes they studied. Some types of Escherichia coli can cause diarrhea (腹泻) or even brain diseases. Other bacteria found on shoes can be harmful to our skin, blood and heart.
But we don’t need to worry about this too much. For healthy people, the bacteria found on shoes will likely have little or no risk, according to Live Science. Healthy people have to come into contact with thousands of harmful bacteria in order to become sick.
Also, bacteria mostly stay on the ground. But most of us don’t spend a lot of time on the ground. “In this case, you’re not going to get sick from it,” according to Jonathan Sexton from the University of Arizona, US. However, children who often climb around on the floor and people who are unhealthy should be careful about these bacteria. For healthy adults, it is not too big of an issue.
