Do you know the reason why we feel tired in the middle of a class? Maybe you would say it is because the teacher’s class is boring.     1     Perhaps this is something you have not paid enough attention to or not yet noticed.

Purpose of sleep.

2     Sleep helps our body heal (修复), grow, and stay healthy. It also gives us energy, so we can be active all day. Doctors and health scientists say: When you close your eyes and need to rest, sleep is just the very best! This is more than advice.

Sleep time.

Enough sleep is important to us. How much sleep do we need? New-born babies sleep most of the time. They can sleep 20—22 hours a day. Children need 10—12 hours of sleep a day. Teenagers need 8-10 hours of sleep a day because they need lots of energy to grow into their adult (成人的) bodies. Grown-ups usually need 6-8 hours of sleep to keep active.     3     That is why old people sleep less than young people.

Interesting facts.

Almost everyone has their dreams while they sleep, but not all of them can tell their dreams clearly when they wake up.     4     More surprisingly, some may even get up in their dreams and walk around. This is called “sleepwalking”. Are you a sleepwalker? Or, is there a sleepwalker around you?

    5

It’s not just people that love to snooze (打盹). In fact, many animals have unusual or surprising sleeping habits. Some animals, such as bears and hedgehogs, sleep all through winter. The swift is a very fast bird that can sleep while it flies! Cute koalas sleep around 18 hours a day. Giraffes don’t need much sleep at all. They usually sleep standing up.

A.Sleepy animals.
B.Why do we need sleep?
C.Some people talk in their dreams.
D.However, the real reason is probably that we don’t have enough sleep.
E.The older you get, the less sleep you will need.
F.How to sleep well.

【推荐1】Now too much CO2 makes the Earth warmer and warmer, and brings bad effect to people. To save our Earth, a new lifestyle called low-carbon life becomes popular. Low carbon means low energy and no waste. It is necessary for everybody to learn to live a low-carbon life.

文章大意:本文主要介绍了男性和女性在购物时看到用红色写着价格的广告时的不同反应以及成功销售的关键和影响因素。

【推荐2】Have you ever been shopping and thought you were getting a good deal simply because the price appeared in red? Or have you left a shop because the salesman talked too much? If your answers are yes, you’re not alone. In fact, your actions are typical (典型的).

We find, quite interestingly, men are more affected than women. When men see an advertisement with the prices written in red, they believe the shop is offering better prices than those written in black. They feel sure about buying the products as well.

However, women don’t feel the same way. When it comes to shopping, women think about everything much more carefully than men. Experts explain that if women see the prices in red, they will question what’s happening and think they must be more careful. “Am I being tricked?” they’ll ask themselves. Women also seem to have a much better memory than men when it comes to the prices in an advertisement, because men are not interested like women.

A new study shows that the key to a successful sale is reading customers’ moods and matching them. The experts explain that if a customer is angry, in a hurry, or in a bad mood, he’d like to deal with a salesman who can understand him, serve him quickly, or just leave him alone.

There are, of course, some other factors (因素) in making a sale. For example, good weather means good news for shop owners. About 60%—80% of customers’ decisions are made while people are actually in a shop. And as more people are out during nice weather, there’s a higher chance when they’re shopping.

【推荐3】Humans and gorillas(大猩猩) shared evolution(进化)for 23 million years. Their paths separated only six million years ago. New research on how gorillas communicate may help us better understand human language.

Understanding how the brain works helps us see a connection (联系) between language development and non- verbal(不使用语言的) signs. “Gorillas have many kinds of non-verbal communication.” said psychologist(心理学家) Sebestyen Forrester from the University of Sussex. He thinks humans may have had the same communication skills.

Non-verbal communication includes the ways we move our bodies and the different expressions on our faces. A new study on gorillas showed that right-handedness may have a connection with communication. The right side of the body is controlled by the left part of the brain, which is also where language develops.

Two cameras were used to watch how one gorilla moved. It was shown that gorillas use their right hands more when they are doing actions with their heads or mouths at the same time. This may show that there is a connection between how our brains work and the reason we use one side of our body more than the other.

Forrester said the results could help us understand how children learn languages. For example, some children have a condition called autism (自闭症) in which they have a hard time communicating with other people. This same kind of study may help doctors find autism in children at an earlier age.
