This is the story of two adventurous mountain climbers, Joe Simpson and Simon Yates, who managed to climb the West Face of Siula Grande.
Several teams had tried before, but all failed. After reaching the top, Joe and Simon decided to go back down an extremely dangerous but faster route. Then something dramatic happened. Joe fell over, breaking his leg. They had no communication with the base camp, and there was no chance of outside help. As a snowstorm was forming around them, Simon tied two ropes together, tied them to himself and then around Joe, and started lowering him. Suddenly, the rope got stuck between two rocks and Joe was left hanging in mid-air over a huge crevasse(裂缝).
Simon couldn’t talk to him or see him. He tried hopelessly for more than an hour to pull his friend up, but without success. The situation was obviously hopeless. Simon imagined both himself and his friend dying in the snow and ice. He didn’t want to leave his friend alone, but the more he thought about it, the more he began to understand that there was surely no way he could save both his own life and that of his friend.
Finally, Simon had no choice but cut the rope and saved his own life. Joe fell away, right down to the bottom of the crevasse. The next day, when Simon continued down the mountain and passed the area where Joe had landed, he saw nothing, and supposed Joe was dead.
But Joe wasn’t. He had survived the fall and managed to climb out of the crevasse. For the next three and a half days, he continued to go down the mountain, climbing and hopping on one leg under extremely difficult conditions. He even managed to cross a glacier(冰川) with no safety equipment(装备). When he finally got to their base camp, the climbers were amazed to see him, especially Simon.
After the two men went back home, their story became famous. Simon was unfairly blamed(责备) for cutting the rope. In 1988, Joe wrote a book about the accident and defended(辩护) for his friend. He believed Simon made the right decision.

Most of us probably do not enjoy doing housework. The thought of cleaning the bathroom or cooking dinner for the family makes most of us feel pain. However, the fact is that someone has to do it. Most of the time it is the parents who end up doing housework. Is this really fair? What can we get by learning to help out more around the house?
Doing housework is really not as bad as it sounds. If we all do our part, it will seem much less frightening. Why should your mother have to wash our dirty dishes? Part of growing up is being able to take care of yourself. Doing little things around the house will show that you are fully grown and able to deal with your own things.
Some of us may think that we are too busy with our schoolwork to do housework. But most parents work all day and are then expected to keep a clean house! It is too big a burden to put on by one or two people. Dividing housework among the whole family will make everyone’s job easier. It seems much more manageable to have three or more people all working together to keep the house clean.
Cooking is one part of housework that can be very fun if you use creativity. Learning how to cook a meal is a very valuable skill. If you learn how to cook your favorite foods, you will be showing your independence and also have a very special talent.
Learning to do your share of housework will provide you with valuable skills for the future. It gives you a sense of responsibility that will stay with you as you meet larger and larger tasks. Don’t be afraid to help around the house, your parents will be greatly happy with it. The next time you see something that needs to be done at home, do it yourself and show that you can do anything.
