Plastic is everywhere. According to the United Nations, about 2,000 garbage trucks of plastic waste go into waterways such as oceans, rivers, and lakes each day. Now plastic was found on the backs of hermit crabs (寄居蟹). According to a recent study, hermit crabs are using plastic garbage as shells (壳).
Zuzanna Jagiello is a biologist at the University of Warsaw, in Poland. She thinks that the hermit crabs don’t have homes, so they use rubbish. Human activity has had a great influence on the environment. One example of that influence is hermit crabs using plastic waste as shells.
But according to a recent study, at least 386 hermit crabs have been recorded wearing garbage. Of the world’s 16 kinds of hermit crabs that live on land, 10 have been seen wearing garbage. Nearly 9 out of every 10 of those crabs were wearing plastic waste, such as bottle caps. The others wore glass, such as broken light bulbs (灯泡).
Jagiello says that she and her team first learned about hermit crabs wearing garbage when they noticed photos of them online. They decided to learn more by doing research. For their study, the researchers searched the Internet for photos of hermit crabs wearing garbage. They found photos from all over the world. Scientists agree that plastic pollution harms wildlife and habitats (栖息地) in many ways. But so far, it isn’t clear that the crabs are in great danger.

Have you ever heard of e-waste, which can be produced every day? How do you deal with your computers, MP4 players and mobile phones when they’re broken or you want a new one?
Most people just throw them away. With the development of the electronic industry, e-waste pollution has become a serious problem. According to the United Nations, in 2014, people around the world produced 41.8 million tons of e-waste but only recycled 6.5 million tons. The US was the biggest waster, producing 7.1 million tons. China came second with 6 million tons.
It’s important to pay attention to e-waste. It can either be valuable or harmful, depending on how we deal with it. E-waste is a valuable urban mine (城市矿藏). The value of the metals, like gold and silver in the waste around the world, is amazing. And the metals can be reused. But if people throw them away, the toxic (有毒的) chemicals can get into the soil or air, affecting the environment and people’s health.
Apple, for example, now recycles people’s used products in China when they are buying new ones. The company will test and repair the used ones and sell them at lower prices. To help reduce e-waste, we can also take computers and phone to see if companies offer recycling programs.
1. How many tons of e-waste did the people around the world produce in 2014?A.6. | B.6.5. | C.7.1. | D.41.8. |
A.China produced the most e-waste in 2014. |

Just then, when he looked toward the sea, he noticed a small shape that came out of the water. It slowly made its way out on to the sand and began to flap(拍动) its wings. It was weak and tired.
When the creature was just a few feet away, the man couldn’t believe his eyes. A penguin? Penguins don’t belong to Rio. The man was amazed. He looked around to see if there was anyone else noticing this strange sight.
A jogger soon appeared, followed by another. They stopped and stared. It was clear that the penguin was having trouble breathing. The first jogger looked at the sea and said, “Poor fellow, so far away from home.”
The penguin fell to its side. It had swum 2,000 miles, trying to find the tiny fish that penguins like to eat. Why did the penguin need to travel so far? Perhaps it was troubled by global warming. The penguin needed help. It would not survive on the hot sand.
One of the joggers phoned for help, and soon some firemen arrived. The man was glad that the penguin would soon be safe, although he felt a little sad, too.
The event on the beach at Rio happened some time ago. It was only the beginning of penguin migration(迁移) to Brazil. Since that time, hundreds of penguins have appeared on the coasts of Brazil. They come all the way from Patagonia and the Straits of Magellan, southern parts of South America. They land on the sands very tired and hungry, and many of them die. Some are shipped or flown back to colder waters farther south.
Perhaps the experience of the penguins will help us better understand the serious effect of human activity on climate change and on the condition of our planet.

According to the UN, over 140 tons of rubbish has been left on the mountain. To reduce (减少) rubbish, China is limiting (限制) the number of people who are allowed to climb up the north side of the mountain. Only 300 people will be allowed to climb it, and only during spring.
Local people cleaned the mountain last year, removing rubbish at a height of 5, 200 meters. They collected about 8.4 metric tons (公吨) of rubbish.
This year, the local (当地的) government plans to spend 4 million yuan on a new clean-up activity. The local government is also setting up stations to sort (分类 ), recycle and break down rubbish collected from the mountain. A group of artists will also try to turn the rubbish into art works. They will show these works of art to remind people not to leave rubbish when climbing the mountain.

I think it’s very convenient to use if you have a smartphone(智能手机). You can unlock a mobike by using the smartphone. You should find a nearest mobike through the APP and scan the QR code(二维码)on the bike and you can enjoy your trip. Compared to other forms of sharing bike, the greatest advantage of the mobike is that you can easily find one and never worry about where to park it.
In a word, the mobike is becoming a new green travel mode(方式). Riding a mobike can make us stronger and healthier. I believe it can relieve(缓解)the traffic pressure and does good to the environment as well. From now on, no matter where I go, I will choose this green traveling.

As an individual (个人), what can we do to settle the problem of food waste?
Welcome “ugly food”
In fact, food waste starts on farms. On the farm, farmers usually choose pretty vegetables and fruit and send them to the nearby supermarkets. Then those ugly vegetables and fruit often go to waste.
Usually, ugly vegetables and fruit are of the same quality as those beautiful ones. So we can choose ugly vegetables and fruit that often get left behind on farms but are safe to eat.
Buy local food
Now all over the world, many cities encourage people to buy local food. It is a good idea because a lot of food waste happens during transportation (运输). If the storage conditions for fresh food are not good enough, a lot of food will rot (腐烂) along the way. It means before reaching supermarkets, the food has to be thrown away. So buy local food, and cut food waste.
Make shopping plans
In our daily life, we can plan our meals and buy only what we need. By making a shopping list and sticking to it, we can avoid overbuying and wasting food.
1. Which word can take the place of the underlined word?A.cause | B.solve | C.find | D.help |
A.People begin to waste food just from farms on. |
B.Local food is the best for people’s health in fact. |
