Have you ever found yourself in a situation where you’re talking to someone but they keep looking at their phone? This is called “phubbing”—a mix of the words “phone” and “snubbing (不理睬)”. When someone is “phubbing”, they’re using their phone to look through the online news, check messages, play games and so on, instead of focusing on the conversation or spending time with the people they’re with. The word was first used back in 2012, when fewer people had smartphones. And now that most people have smartphones, phubbing is a common problem.
Most people would agree that it’s rude to focus on your phone when you’re spending time with another person. The expert William Hanson thinks so, too. “Phubbing is a no-no!” he says. “If you have planned to go out with friends, focus on them and not on your phone.” Studies have found that phubbing can damage your relationships with others. Phubbing can make people feel excluded. They have a strong sense of not being accepted and those who “phub” are thought of as less polite and caring. So science has shown that phubbing is not good for us—but why do we do it? It might be because we are feeling bored, worried or stressed. Or it might be because we are addicted to (沉溺于) checking our phones, especially social media. Whatever the reason may be, phubbing is a bad habit and can make us miss out on real moments with the people around us.
So the next time you’re spending time with a friend or family member, try and keep your phone out of sight!

China is a world leader in 5G network quality and has already built over 1.6 million 5G base stations. This means that China’s telecom companies will be able to offer 5G networks for mobile phone users.
Each mobile network generation is faster and more powerful than the one before it. 1G let us talk to each other. 2G let us send messages. 3G gave us data and the Internet. And 4G made all of these things faster. What`s special about 5G? 5G has a very short delay(延迟)between sending and receiving information. Now, 4G takes about 100 to 200 milliseconds to send and receive data. But 5G will get it down to 1 millisecond or less—this is almost real-time.
This big change will not only make our mobile Internet faster, but also deeply change our lives. Read on to find out how.
5G + entertainment 5G networks are about 100 times faster than 4G. This means you can download a movie in seconds using 5G. Also, virtual reality(VR)games will become more popular with 5G. The short delay of 5G will make the games feel even more real. 5G + transport 5G will also bring us safer self-driving cars. These cars can send signals to each other. They also talk to traffic lights and road sensors. 5G will allow cars to react(反应)even faster than human drivers. 5G + smart homes 5G also makes the Internet of things possible. Internet of things is a large network that connects everything to the Internet. Smart homes are part of it. For example, the oven can automatically(自动地)start making breakfast after your alarm rings. And if the smart sprinkler feels the air becoming dry, it could water your plants by itself. |
A.1G. | B.2G. | C.3G. |
A.To make people know the knowledge of 5G. |
B.To encourage people to use the new network technology. |
C.To show the development of mobile network technology. |
A.People can download more movies by using 5G. |
B.More people are interested in virtual reality games. |
C.People can talk with self-driving cars during the journey. |
A.To make breakfast. | B.To set alarm clock. | C.To water plants. |
A.5G will change our lives in many ways. |
B.Mobile networks are changing for better. |
C.5G will make the Internet of things possible. |

The reason for it is simple—if you keep the smaller ones, fewer fish will be able to grow and reproduce(繁殖), and the fish population will be in danger. But should we always keep the big ones?
One scientist, Dr.David Conover, has spent the last 10 years studying the effects of the “keep the big ones” rule.
To set up his experiment, Conover and his team caught hundreds of silverside fish and divided them into six groups. For two groups, the scientist followed the “keep the big ones” rule and took out the biggest fish. For the other two groups, he removed only the small fish. For the last two groups, he removed fish randomly(随机地).
After five years, he measured the fish in each group. In the two groups where the biggest fish were regularly removed, the average (平均)fish size was smaller than the average size in the other groups. That is to say, if only small fish survive to reproduce, then future generations of fish are likely to be small.
For the second five years of his experiment, Conover changed the rules and took fish randomly from each group. At the end of the experiment, he found that the fish that were in the “keep the biggest ones” group for the first five years had started to get bigger again, although he expected it would take at least 12 years for the fish in that group to return to their normal size. In other words, it takes less time to shrink(变小)than it does to recover.
1. Why do fishermen follow the “keep the big ones, throw the smaller ones back” rule?A.It helps to protect fish size. | B.They are used to following it. |
C.It helps to protect fish numbers. | D.They will be punished if they don’t. |
A.It made fish smaller on average. | B.It made no difference to fish size. |
C.It made the fish bigger on average. | D.It affected all fish groups similarly. |
A.The whole experiment took Conover more than 12 years. |
B.It takes fish more time to turn to their normal size than it does to grow smaller. |
C.The fish in the six groups had the same average size at the end of the experiment. |
D.The fish in the “keep the big ones” group grew to their normal size in the experiment. |
A.To ask people to catch big fish. |
B.to describe a scientific experiment. |
C.To tell people the danger fish are facing. |
D.To introduce the rules of fishing to readers. |

Whether they are strangers or friends, the rule is “Be kind online”. Students, teachers and parents should be more careful about their words or messages. Everyone should think twice before sending a message to one’s phone or on the Internet.
Here’s a good test about online bullying. If you shouldn’t say it to a person face to face, don’t say it on your phone or on the Internet.
And just like regular bullying in your daily life, tell a grown-up if you or someone you know is being upset in this way. You should tell your parents or teachers and they can tell you how to deal with online bullying properly.
