Summer, winter and fall may have their fans, but spring is clearly the most lovable of the four seasons. Here are some scientific reasons why spring is great.
Spring marks the end of a cold winter. In many places, the temperature in this season is about 15 to 21°C. People tend to be the most comfortable at temperatures around 22°C, so the arrival of spring means people can finally get off their heavy winter clothes and still be comfortable.
Warmer temperatures make people want to spend more time outdoors without freezing their feet, which is great for mental (心理) health. Across the seasons, research has found that taking walks in nature slows people’s heart rate and makes them more relaxed. Spending 30 minutes or more outside in warm, sunny spring weather will put people in a cheerful mood. People can also have better memories through a walk.
Following the spring equinox (春分), days begin lasting longer and nights get shorter. That means people have more light hours to get things done. Research has shown that those extra hours of sun can be an important mood-booster. The longer the sun is up during the day, the less blue people feel.
In addition, many animals move south during the winter. Then they move back north as temperatures rise. For northern areas, there’s no better sign of spring than birdsong outside the window. Birds can start flying north as early as mid-February and it lasts into June. It means that throughout the spring, people can expect to see lots of birds. And seeing more birds can make people happier. A UK study has found that the more birds people see in their neighborhoods, the better their mental health is.

③The sun isn’t warm in winter. There is lots of snow in winter. People and animals don’t like to go outside.
④In winter, when you look outside, you’ll see a lot of brown things, not the green ones. There are no leaves on most of the trees.

Researchers asked 114 volunteers to watch a video. After watching the video, they were divided into three groups .One group was told to walk 10 meters forward. The second group walked 10 meters backward. The third group stood in one place. All three groups were then asked 20 questions about what they saw in the video.
The scientists found that the backward-walking group got two more answers correct on average (平均) than the other two groups.
This suggests that the link between the concepts (概念) of time and space is important in terms of (从……方面) how our minds form memories. When you walk backward, you see things from a different angle (角度). This difference helps people recall things that happened in the past.
And walking backward is not just good for our brains. It is also good for the rest of our bodies. Compared to walking forward, walking backward is more challenging. This can help us improve our fitness, according to New Scientist. Walking backward uses more energy in a short time and burns more calories (卡路里).
In addition, walking backwards is less stressful for our knees. It could be helpful for people who often have pain in their knees, according to researchers from the University of Oregon in the US. Walking backward also keeps our spines strong, which can help to ease pain in the lower back. This might be why many old people like walking backwards.

The Grand Canal is more than 2,500 years old. It is made up of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, the Sui and Tang Grand Canal, and the Zhedong Canal. At nearly 3,200 kilometers long, it is the world’s longest man-made waterway. It has influenced the development of China for hundreds of years.
Before it was built, people in ancient China used horses or simply traveled on foot to trade goods(货物). It was impossible to carry large- sized goods. After the Grand Canal connected the north and the south, business and cultural exchanges were able to develop further.
In fact, the Grand Canal played an important role in the building of the Palace Museum. Materials from different parts of the country were sent to Beijing through the canal, including bricks fired in Shandong and Jiangsu and wood cut in Hunan. People even owe the beginning of Beijing duck to the canal. White lake ducks in the south were shipped to Beijing. They were then kept to make Beijing duck. People from all walks of life preferred to get together along the canal. They shared their experiences, traditions and culture with others.

When you hear the word “shape-shifting (变形的)”, you may think of sci-fi movies, and not the climate (气候). But that’s what animals are doing to deal with climate change.
A new study shows that some animals are gradually growing larger beaks (喙) legs and ears. In this way, they can lose heat more easily to cool themselves down as the earth gets warmer.
“When we talk about climate change, we ask ‘Can humans overcome this?’ or ‘What technology can solve this?’. But we should know that animals also have to adapt to (适应) climate change,” said the study’s researcher, Sara Ryding, from Deakin University, Australia. If animals fail to control their body temperature, they can overheat and die.
In one example, the beaks of some Australian parrot species (鹦鹉物种) have grown 4 to 10 percent larger since 1871. The study says it is closely related (相关的) to rising summer temperatures over the years. Similar examples include wood mice. They have longer tails. Masked shrews (中鼩鼱) are getting longer tails and legs, and bats in warm climates have bigger wings.
Although the changes are still small, Ryding said they could be clearer as the days become hotter. “Body parts like ears are predicted (预测) to be bigger, so we might end up with a live-action Dumbo (a big eared elephant from a Disney cartoon) in the near future,” Ryding said.
Although animals are changing their body shapes, scientists warn that it doesn’t mean everything is fine. It just means they are trying hard to live. Not all animals will succeed. “The climate change that we have created is bringing a whole lot of pressure to bear on them, and while some animals will adapt, others will not,” said Ryding.
