Have you ever noticed you feel happier after helping someone else? Volunteering isn’t just great for the people you support, and it can bring you happiness too.
Volunteering means that you give your time, energy or skills to help others but don’t expect others to give you anything back. There are more than one billion volunteers helping others all over the world, and there are lots of ways you can join them, including raising money for charity, helping in your local community,or even carrying a neighbour’s shopping goods home.
According to Susan Albers, a psychologist, volunteering can reduce stress and make you feel better about your life. This is because being kind and doing things for other people activates (激活) the reward part of the brain and releases (释放) feel good chemicals like dopamine and serotonin. Albers says that volunteering has other benefits (益处) too, such as feeling part of a community, making friends and learning skills.
There are lots of ways you can volunteer. Albers recommends finding something that is meaningful to you. If you love sports, say, then ask if your club needs help like coaching younger players. If you’re passionate about protecting the environment, organize a litter pick or beach clean. You could also ask at your local library, community center or school for volunteering opportunities (机会). Before you start, remember to make sure you check with your parents. What’s more, Albers says volunteering is an activity that everyone can do. You needn’t have a lot of skills or spend much time.”

I was at the shop last night and saw a homeless woman with a trolley (手推车) full of her belongings. She was sitting inside the shop to keep warm. I went up to her and tried to give her money for something to eat, but she refused. She explained that she had enough food today.
I explained that I just wanted to help her and asked if I could buy her something warm. Again, she said no. She thanked me and said how thankful she was that I could offer help. We introduced ourselves, and she said that when I saw her next time, she would accept help. What an amazing woman! The woman taught me an important lesson: Not all homeless people accept money or help if they believe they’ve received enough that day. I look forward to meeting her again.
Walking out into the cold night, I met a homeless man who was freezing (冻僵的). I gave the money to him. He appeared to have had a drinking problem, but I was glad that he accepted my help.
I left with a special feeling. I always try to understand what it’s like to be in a homeless person’s shoes or to imagine if they were my children facing such difficulties. I learned how lucky I am and how thankful I should before what I have.

Yang Ling, 25, is a lover of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). She took part in a three-month training course on acupuncture and tuina (针灸推拿) in the winter of 2023 at Beijing University of Chinese Medicine.
Yang’s life has been different since the training. She changed her life habits after learning the Five Elements theory. For example, she avoided sweating (流汗) too much during exercise in winter and would slow down because of the cold winter, according to TCM. To her, learning these skills and theories was not becoming a TCM doctor but about accepting a new lifestyle.
She is not an unusual example of young people loving TCM. A survey by China Youth Daily showed that 93.3 percent of the 1,000 young people had tried different TCM treatments.
“I have seen a rising number of young people come to me for neck and back pains, which are usually related to the elderly,” said Ma Huifang, a TCM doctor at Guoyitang, a TCM hospital affiliated to Beijing University of Chinese Medicine.
“Between Western medicine and TCM, young people often choose TCM because of its effectiveness (有效性),” according to Ma.
Some people question why TCM treats the same illnesses with different therapies. “This is actually an advantage of TCM instead of a shortcoming, as it can be a more effective treatment for different patients,” Ma explained.
Younger age groups are welcoming TCM, and, at the same time, TCM is also benefiting young people. As Yang noted, “It helps young people understand Chinese medicine and learn the value of Chinese culture.”

In China, Lichun means “Start of Spring”. It is the first solar term (节气) in the 24 solar terms of China, and it begins on February 4 and ends on February 18.
“Start of Spring” makes the end of winter and the beginning of the spring. The weather becomes warmer and plants start to grow again. It is the last relaxing period (时期) before the busy farming time. After this period, farmers can start farming again.
There are many traditional activities held on the day to welcome spring. Some people made sculpture (泥塑) of a cow and they call it the “spring cow”. Women and their children go around the cow three times, and it is said that in that way the children can stay away from bad luck. In some areas, people dressed up and dance to enjoy the spring season. Some made “spring roosters” with colorful cotton cloth to wish to bring good luck. The most popular one is standing up eggs. It is an interesting activity to try to stand eggs. If you can make an egg stand up on the first day of “Start of Spring”, you will have good luck in the new year.
The main dish for this period is spring pancakes. Eating the spring pancakes together with other cooked dishes is called biting (咬) the spring. You need a thin pancake and put different fillings inside according to your taste, then fold it together, finally eat it from top to bottom. And of course, people believe that this dish bring them good luck.
As a Chinese saying goes, “the whole year’s work depends on a good start in spring”.

Making a public speech is the thing that most people don’t want to do. The reason is that we are all afraid of making mistakes in front of others. The more important the speech is, the more frightened we will be. But forget it now. Public speaking is easy. It’s just a simple talking, Although Pm a shy man, I’ve been making speeches and talking on radio and television for more than 30 years. Anybody who can talk can speak in public. Here are some of the lessons I have learned.
Keep your speech simple. Your audience(听众) can’t take all of your main ideas, and they can only remember one or two of them, not ten or twenty. So you should prepare one or two of your main ideas very well. But if you can’t express what you want to say, then your speech will not be paid attention to. And if you don’t have a clear idea of what you want to say, your audience won’t, either.
Organize your speech well. No matter how long or short your speech is, you have to organize your speech—how you are going to open or begin, what main points you want to make and how you’re going to close or end. A strong close is usually very important and critical(关键的): the last thing you say is what your audience will most likely remember. If not, they will be confused.
Keep your speech not long. The standard(标准的) length of a speech is usually 12 minutes. Most people can’t put their minds in one thing for too long time, which will make them tired and lose their interest. If you pay no attention to your audience’s reaction(反应), the audience will get bored. Of course, your speech will fail.
Following these suggestions above, you can make a good speech in public, and you will be an excellent speaker, I think.
