Li Ruyan, 13 years old, did something special last summer with his classmates in Shanghai. They worked in groups with traffic police at different crossroads in the city. Holding small red flags, the students helped keep order and stopped people from jaywalking.As part of the school project, Li’s school has encouraged its students to do more community work. After the half day of hard work, Li told himself not to jaywalk anymore.

“I think through community work we can help others, and more importantly, we grow a sense of responsibility,” he said.

Community service is an important part of education for teenagers around the world. In the US and Canada, high school students need to finish 40 hours of community service before graduation. In America, those who have finished 1, 400 hours of community work can be awarded nearly $5, 000.

Chinese students today do more community work, too. For example, starting from 2010, high school students in Sichuan have been asked to do 10 days of community work. It will become part of their school grades.

Qian Lijun, 16, and her classmates in Suzhou, Jiangsu went to a local elder care home this winter. They helped put Spring Festival couplets on the walls and cheered up the people living there.

Li Xiaotian, 15, in Anshan said he used to clear ads from telephone poles with his classmates. They brought tools, towels and buckets and worked for three hours in the summer sun. “It was tiring, but seeing the clean poles without ugly ads, we really felt proud,” he said.

But what about children with medical conditions who don’t look like anyone else? Pacheco wanted to give these children the same gift she got as a child. Over the past several months, she has made dolls for kids who have unique facial appearances.

Pacheco, a senior at Cathedral Catholic High School in California, US, got the idea for the doll project after remembering a magazine story about “A Doll Like Me”. This is a project that makes custom dolls for children with disabilities. Pacheco reached out to Fresh Start Surgical Gifts, an organization that provides free surgery (手术) and other medical treatment for children. She asked if she could create similar dolls for some of its customers.

For this project, Pacheco watched doll-making tutorials (教程), then designed her own patterns and figured out how to make dolls that looked like her customers. It was important to her that the children could see themselves in the dolls, but that their differences would not be the most noticeable feature(特征).

Zulema Gillett got one of Pacheco’s dolls. She said she loves the idea. “Who doesn’t want a doll that looks like them and that they could relate to?” Gillett said.
